Recorded live at Cafe OTO in London, the first trio meeting of David Toop on flutes, objects, electronics, African fiddle and assorted sound sources, Ecka Mordecai on cello, and Christian Kobi on saxophones unfolds as a finely detailed improvisation of breath, friction, fragile resonance and charged silence, their distinct timbres continually merging into an elusive and organic sonic environment.

Recorded live at Cafe Oto, in London, UK, on April 23rd, 2024, by Rory Salter.
Recorded live at London's Cafe OTO on April 23, 2024, Moth Wings Beating Air Incised documents the first trio performance by David Toop, cellist Ecka Mordecai, and Swiss saxophonist Christian Kobi, unfolding as a single extended improvisation in which three highly individual approaches to sound converge with remarkable sensitivity.
Toop draws from an idiosyncratic collection of flutes, card, bow, leaves, cassette, African fiddle, phone apps, rattles, bone-conduction devices and other objects, creating an elusive field of rustling textures, breath, friction, electronic traces and unstable resonances. Mordecai's cello moves between sustained tone, fragile harmonics, grainy bow pressure and near-silence, while Kobi's soprano and tenor saxophones contribute finely controlled breath, multiphonics and narrow strands of pitch.
Rather than developing through conventional exchanges or clearly defined solos, the performance proceeds through close listening and continual shifts of density, the musicians frequently blurring the distinction between instrumental sound, object noise and environmental texture. Small gestures acquire unusual weight: scraped surfaces, bowed strings, breath tones and faint electronic sounds emerge, overlap and disappear, leaving stretches of charged space in their wake.
The title and accompanying text by Toop evoke moths, leaves, dust, incisions, breath and barely perceptible movement, imagery well suited to music whose character lies in delicate physical detail and fleeting sonic events. An exceptionally attentive document of spontaneous collective sound-making from three improvisers concerned as much with silence, texture and the material qualities of sound as with instrumental identity.

He was a member of the Flying Lizards and a contributor to the British magazine The Face. He is a regular contributor to The Wire, a British music magazine. Soon after his birth, his parents moved to Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, where he grew up. He was educated at Broxbourne Grammar School, which he left in 1967 to study at Hornsey College of Art. Since the 1970s, Toop has also been a significant presence on the British experimental and improvised music scene, collaborating with Max Eastley, Brian Eno, Scanner, and others. He is a member of the improvising, genre-hopping quartet Alterations, active from 1977 to 1986 and reforming in 2015. In 2001, Toop curated the sound art exhibition Sonic Boom, and the following year, he curated a 2-CD collection entitled Not Necessarily Enough English Music: A Collection of Experimental Music from Great Britain, 19601977. More experimentally, Toop has also actively engaged with 'sounding objects' from a range of museums." ^ Hide Bio for David Toop • Show Bio for Ecka Mordecai "Ecka Mordecai is a 'cellist based in Manchester, U.K. Originally trained in Renaissance (viola de gamba) and classical music, she now works in the realms of group free-improvisation and composition for solo cello with sound objects." ^ Hide Bio for Ecka Mordecai • Show Bio for Christian Kobi "Born in Berne (Switzerland).
