A spirited duo between guitarist Ava Mendoza and baritone saxophonist Dave Sewelson, moving fluidly between free improv, soulful grooves, and song-based pieces — including compositions by William Parker — with Mendoza's blues-tinged electric guitar and Sewelson's gritty saxophone and vocals creating a raw, expressive dialog that shifts from earthy lyricism to fiercely charged abstraction.

Recorded at Park West Studios, in Brooklyn, New York, in October, 2021, and September, 2022, by Jim Clouse.
"So when Ava and I started this project I thought it would be one of those freejazz records where you go in the studio for an afternoon and blow and get about an hour of music and make it into a record. On the way to this session I got William Parker to kick in some tunes. Didn't realize that Ava would come up with beautiful arrangements for them and that I would end up singing them. We ended up with quite a collection of material that day including completely improvised pieces and grooves and songs.
We decided to come back to the studio to make this thing hang together as one cohesive whole. The way the material goes from completely out to soulful grooves to art songs makes a record that I could not have imagined."-Dave Sewelson
"[...] There's no mistaking Mendoza's guitar [...] since on her own and in tandem with the saxist, she strums simple rhythmic progressions and pinpoints bottleneck or heavily amped asides with equal facility. Perhaps it's best to discuss Sewelson's singing at the top. With those songs actually composed by William Parker, the saxophonist's gruff-Tom Waits-like heaves outline the anti-war or fanciful lyrics clearly, but don't pose challenges to any full-time vocalist. Interestingly enough the backing guitar tones turn more towards Blues-Rock licks or Country picking than anywhere else on the disc.
More generic to the duets, an accelerated tune like "Don't Buy the Lie" bring out a high-speed chord which echo onto itself with the same whirlwind intensity the saxophonist brings to his strained, stop-time and split tone blowing. Meanwhile the nursery-rhyme-like simplicity of "Scaribari" has Mendoza following the saxophonist scooping out his lowest tones with almost baritone guitar string resonations until the two separate as she works up the scale and he doubles down on heavier reed shakes.
Although both are able to create warmer tones or wallow in technical ones, and Mendoza sometimes turns to simple comping alongside Sewelson's basement tones, the most exciting sequences are fired up. Primary instance of this is the title tune. The guitarist's slurred fingering reach such a pitch and tempo that they seemed to be amped enough to come from two guitars. Meanwhile the reverberations, slurs and multiphonics from the saxophonist reach such as level of fervor that they almost sound electrified. [...]."-Ken Waxman

• Show Bio for Ava Mendoza "My name is Ava Mendoza. I play guitars and stompboxes and write music. Currently I'm based out of Brooklyn, NY. I have played guitar for most of my life and been active for the last decade playing my own music and in many different groups. In any context I try to bring expressivity, energy and a wide sonic range to the music I play. I've toured throughout the U.S. and Europe and recorded or performed with a broad spectrum of musicians including singer Carla Bozulich (The Geraldine Fibbers, Evangelista), Fred Frith (Massacre, Henry Cow, Art Bears), Nels Cline, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Weasel Walter, Tune-Yards, and more. I've played on recordings released by labels Weird Forest, Tzadik, Clean Feed, NotTwo, ugEXPLODE, Resipiscent, New Atlantis, and others. Friendly critics have called me "Oakland's avant-jazz virtuoso" (Brad Cohan, Village Voice), "a versatile and virtuosic guitarist" (The San Francisco Film Society), "a wizard on a semi-circle of effects pedals, but equally adept with FX-less technique," (Lars Gotrich, A Blog Supreme/NPR Jazz). I was recently named one of Guitar Worlds 10 Female Guitarists You Should Know. My main project these days is UNNATURAL WAYS . PERFORMED/RECORDED WITH: Scott Amendola (Nels Cline Singers, Charlie Hunter Quartet), Liz Allbee, Vijay Anderson, Bran(...)pos, Carla Bozulich (The Geraldine Fibbers, Evangelista), Sheldon Brown, Tony Buck (The Necks), members of Caroliner, Nels Cline (Wilco), George Cremaschi, Tim Dahl (Child Abuse, Lydia Lunch), J.A.
