Recording inside of abandoned agricultural silos in the Colorado plains during the summer of 2023, percussionist Ryan Seward and saxophonist Andrew Weathers leverage the resonance of these large metal structures, taking a slow pace employing silence with a pensive attitude as they improvise encased in these "Laminar Interiors: thin layers of interior sound".

Recording on an afternoon in Andrew Weather's studio Wind Tide, in Littlefield, Texas in 2023, from the electroacoustic trio of Kory Reeder on double bass, electronics & gongs, Ryan Seward on psaltery & electronics and Andrew Weathers on lap steel & tenor saxophone, the final compositions assembled from two improvisations using two different tunings that Seward brought with him.

Active since 1976, the Northwoods Improviser collective founded by percussionist and drummer Mike Gilmore and bassist Mike Johnston, with drummer Nick Ashton joining in 1986, working with saxophonist Faruq Z. Bey after the 2000s; this live-in-the-studio recording is of the rhythmic trio captured joyfully jamming on the music they would record with Bey later that day.

The former touring guitarist for Bikini Kill, who has also worked with The Raincoats and Kim Gordon, in a 2-part solo work of experimental approaches to the electric guitar, starting with minimal loops that slowly layer in intensity until reaching a climactic release and dispersal, picked up again in the second part for a unique work of noise and alien guitar soloing.

Continuing his investigations into ancient Welsh Harps, the Telyn Wrachïod (which translates to the Witches Harp) used pegs or brags emerging from the string-holes, in Welsh called gwrachïod, which could be adjusted to press on the strings to create a buzzing percussive sound used for dancing, here in improvisations by Rhodri Davies using a Urquhart bray harp.

A companion piece to UK improvising harpist Rhodri Davie's solo album Telyn Rawn , asking some of his favorite musicians to respond to the 18 improvised pieces on that album, instructing them to imagine that the source material was an ancient musical form from the medieval period, and that their responses were to be modern interpretations of those "ancient" forms.

After a long break from their last recording, the long-lasting (since 1977!) BassDrumBone trio of Mark Helias on bass, Gerry Hemingway on drum and Ray Anderson on trombone came together for a packed 2023 concert at Zurcher Gallery, the enthusiasm resonating into this studio session days later as the trio recorded a mix of collective improvisations and one composition from each.

In configurations of solo to an 11-piece ensemble, Aural Terrain assembles great players including Tim Hodgkinson, Jason Alder, Yoni Silver, Chris Cundy, &c to perform works by composers John Cage, Gerard Grisley, Giacinto Scelsi, Thanos Chrysakis, Jule Kjaer and Tim Hodgkinson; seven acoustic compositions written between 1978 and 2022 that prominently feature horns as trumpets, clarinets and saxophones.

Reimagining familiar and more obscure works of Duke Ellington through the lense of contemporary improvisation, including "Mood Indigo", "Black and Tan Fantasy", "Self Portrait of the Bean", "Burmingham Breakdown", &c., from the powerful Who Trio of Michel Wintsch on piano, Banz Oester on double bass and Gerry Hemingway on drums, captured live at the 2023 Jazz Festival Willisau.

Exploring further the concepts of free jazz, saxophonist Ornette Coleman's back-to-back 1961 & 62 albums find the composer and innovator in a ground-breaking double quartet that includes Eric Dolphy, Don Cherry & Freddie Hubbard, Scott LaFaro & Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgns & Ed Blackwell; then with quintet with Scott LaFaro temporarily taking Charlie Haden's chair.

The French/Danish band Sparkling Sessions merge free improvisation and experimental music styles, borrowing from outsider jazz and electronic music, with collaborations from well-known musicians including trumpeter Jac Berrocal or synth player Vincent Epplay, here in a collection of performances at the Sparkling Sound Festival in Copenhagen in 2022.

Four electroacoustic improvisations recorded in Italy between Jean-Marc Foussat on Synthi AKS, piano, toys & voice, Guy-Franck Pellerin on saxophones & percussion, and Eugenio Sanna on amplified guitar, metal strips balloons, cellophane & voices, an album of unconventional orchestration and approach that fascinates in its unusual sonic journey.

Titled for the length of the album (Thirty-Five Minutes & Twenty-Three Seconds) the duo of Foussat & Lazro, who have performed as a trio with Evan Parker and in the Clifford Thornton Memorial Quartet, concentrate their work into this incredible merging of transformative synthetics and textural sax expression, with moments of lyrical and alien beauty emerging from their sophisticated dialog.

Four journeys in passionately rich sound merging synthetics, acousmatic sources, field recordings and acoustic violin from the duo of Anne Foucher, who has worked with the Acousmaki collective, on violin and electronics, and Jean-Marc Foussat on Synthi AKS, piano, toys and voice, captured live in 2022 at rue Floreal, in Montpellier and at rue de Genac, in Bignac, France.

Three improvisations recorded in concert at Impromptu, in Bordeaux, France and at Cameleon, in Toulouse, between Xavier Camarasa (MILESDAVISQUINTET!) on Fender Rhodes and Jean on Marc Foussat on Synthi AKS, voice & toys, with Marc Maffiolo joining on baritone saxophone for one piece at Cameleon; rich interactions of incredible texture & detail and unforeseen twists & turns.

Applying unique techniques to percussive instruments and drums, French free jazz drummer Luc Bouquet (Pli Urgent Quartet, Cyanur) performs six improvisations as an homage to his father--a ballroom and jazz drummer who risked his freedom to perform at "Clandestine Balls" during the WW II German occupation--reflected in Bouquet's edgy sonic palette and overall narrative in presentation.

Trumpeter Jac Berrocal's 80's underground avant-garde band Catalogue with drummer Gilbert Artman (Lard Free, Urban Sax) and electric guitarist Jean-Francois Pauvros were known for their merging of experimental and boundary pushing forms of improvised jazz, punk, and rock (Think Etron Fou or This Heat); these early recordings by Jean-Marc Foussat find the band at their most assertively eclectic.
