Hollow Deck: Over East [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD] (Tripticks Tapes)

Straddling quirky folk song and experimental sound collage, the long-running Western Massachusettes duo of fiddler, banjo player & singer Mia Friedman and clarinetist, wind player & sound artist Andy Allen (Guerilla Toss) present an album of observational songs with unusual perspectives and an anything goes approach to the music that surrounds each song; delightful.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Very unique duo using voice/violin + woodwinds/tapes -- a messy collage of melodic song, angular arrangement, and analog electronics that somehow works. Featuring a former founding member of Guerilla Toss, they've stayed under the radar and have quietly been making daring and difficult to categorize music for a long time. A true gem among many Western Mass-based weirdos."-Tripticks Tapes

"Western Mass's Hollow Deck which include the partnership of multi-instrumentalists Mia Friedman and Andy Allen will bring their exciting and hard to categorize music to the Experimental Sound Studio for the first time. Come hear for yourself what Forced Exposure Magazine says "easily transcends any real or imaginary boundaries of what's possible to do with just four hands."-Tim Daisy/Option Curator

Artist Biographies

"Mia Friedman is a fiddler, singer and banjo player. She is largely influenced by American roots music and old-time Appalachian traditions, and blends this with contemporary music in her compositions. Her song "Across the Water" won the 2010 John Lennon Songwriting Contest in the folk category, and she was the 2006 New Hampshire Highland Games Scottish Fiddle Champion. Mia performs in Ari & Mia, a duo she has with her sister, Ariel Friedman. They have toured all over the United States, and have four CDs, two of which were ranked high on National folk radio charts. Mia also plays with Hollow Deck - a duo of tape collage, vocals, and woodwinds - and avant-garde rock band, Creative Healing. Mia graduated from New England Conservatory in 2012 where she studied with Anthony Coleman, Carla Kihlstedt, and Hankus Netsky. Locally she spent several years teaching strings at the Community Music School of Springfield and the Hartsbrook School. She has been co-directing the Fiddle Orchestra of Western Massachusetts since 2021."

Dark Listening [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tripticks Tapes)
Taking the viola da gamba and the daxophone into uncharted (dark) territories, composer Daniel Fishkin (who studied with daxophone inventor Hans Racheil) presents four works leveraging interference & frequency patterns, performed with an exceptional set of specialists on each instrument, and Fishkin's own 20-foot long instrument, The Lady's Harp, creating long, sustained tones.
Dunston, Nick
Skultura [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tripticks Tapes)
Bassist & composer Nick Dunston's Berlin band Skultura creates a uniquely experimental and fascinatingly sculpted approach to free jazz through layers of sound and serious playing punctuated by voice and concrete elements, each piece keeping the listener in anticipation of what might happen next, eased into serious jazz grooves, then whisked away in new directions; not to be missed!

Pianissimo Etc [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tripticks Tapes)
Powerfully rich sounds from two NY-based instrumentalists — John McCowen on contrabass clarinet & Carlo Costa on bass drum & percussion — in a three-part work of acoustic improvisations, McCowen sounding deceptively electronic through overtones and masterful harmonic technique, while Costa's bass drum provides deep foundations as he mysteriously layers percussive distractions; phenomenal!
Coles, Dominic
Alphabets
(Tripticks Tapes)
A study of language through the repetition of fragmented sound, demonstrating how repetition brings alienation of meaning, Cole creating a synthetic alphabet within an unsignified musical context of electronic responses, repeated until the listener loses contact or reference to the original word; a challenging series of transformations rewarding to the engaged listener.

The 2nd release from the touring duo of Audrey Chen & trombonist Henrik Munkeby, Chen modifying her voice with amplification and performing on analog electronics, while Munkeby amplifies his trombone and also performs on analog electronics, feedback & sound files; often frighteningly intense improvisations that plays to the spectrum of sound in a mix of studio and live recordings.
