Johansson, Karin / Lisen Rylander Love: Arter (Havtorn Records)

The Swedish title translating to "Species", the contemplatively elegant interactions between pianist Karin Johansson and tenor saxophonist Lisen Rylander are named for extinct species of animals and plants, as the two improvise over the loss of species that disappear from the earth every year, their wistful music augmented through preparations, kalimbas, live electronics and percussion.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Fine-veined Crinkle Weed, Wentletrap and The Two Lipped Door Snail are some of the poetically resonating titles on the pianist Karin Johansson and saxophonist Lisen Rylander Love's new album Arter (Species). The song titles are also names of plants and animals from the SLU Artdatabanken's red list of threatened species. The reality that many species disappear completely from our planet yearly is what the duo shines a light on with their new album. Arter is recorded during one day at Elementstudion in Gothenburg, and the music is completely improvised."-Havtorn

Karin Johansson can also be heard with her group ORD, in trio with Nina de Heney and Henrik Wartel, duo with Finn Loxbo and with Jonny Wartel 4.

Lisen Rylander Löve has recorded under her own name, and can be heard with the jazz quartets The Splendor and Here's To Us. She is also known for her work with the electronic group Midaircondo.

"Lisen Rylander Löve is a musician and composer from Sweden, working in the field of jazz, free jazz, electronic music, experimental pop, and improvisation. Her main instrument is the saxophone but her artistry also often includes voice, live electronics and field recordings.

She started with classical piano at the age of six and at the age of 14 she formed her first pop band fronting as lead singer and saxophone player. Eventually, the saxophone, improvisation and a more liberal approach to music became increasingly important. Consequently, Lisen applied to the Jazz program at Skurup and thereafter the program for improvisation musicians at the Academy for Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg, taking her exam in year 2000.

Lisen has released numerous albums, mainly on the labels Type Records, HOOB Records and her own label Twin Seed Recordings. She has also toured worldwide with her music performing at, for example, Sónar (ES), Mutek Festival (CL), Vancouver Jazz Festival (CA), Molde Jazzfestival (NO), Berlin Music Week (DE), Rochester International Jazz Festival (US), and in Morocco, Mexico, Italy, France, Portugal, UK, Ireland, Denmark, Romania, Austria and Switzerland.

In 2008 Lisen Rylander Löve received the Monica Zetterlund award and in 2009 she was declared Newcomer of the year by Sveriges Radio Jazzkatten. In 2010 she was awarded composer of the year by SKAP - The Swedish Society of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.

For twelve years she was one part of the electronica group Midaircondo that started their exploration of electronic sounds combined with acoustic instruments in the early 2000s. Lisen Rylander Löve is today a well-established name in Swedish jazz and experimental music, not least through her creative work with the acoustic jazz quartets The Splendor and Here's To Us, with which she has released several acclaimed albums. She is also working constantly with various collaborations and as a guest musician, such as touring for the past years with Union Carbide Productions and Richard Barbieri (the band Japan), among others. She has previously played with artists like Amason, Anders Jormin, Lina Nyberg, Nels Cline, Rickie Lee Jones, Fatomata Diawara and Adrian Belew.

Lisen also composes music for dance, performance and theatre, for example Dödsängel by Teater Jaguar, Skirtpower by Danskompaniet Spinn and Dåliga Känslor by Abnorm Scenkonst.

Lisen is perpetually exploring as a musician and artist. In 2019, she released her first solo album OCEANS, which she composed, produced and recorded herself in her studio in Gothenburg. The album has been described as an uncompromising and multi-faceted debut with a meld of electronica, improvisation, jazz and experimental pop. By mixing acoustic instruments such as saxophone and voice with live electronics and field recordings she creates her suggestive and multi-layered soundscapes."
