Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"In the 1970s, Robert Cahen turned to the burgeoning field of video art, where he became a pioneering artist. He was originally trained in musique concrete, his creative background, and joined the Groupe de Recherches Musicales in 1972. The pieces on this record were composed in the GRM studios between 1971 and 1974. They testify to a lively inspiration and imagination combined with a precocious formal mastery that already carries the seeds of later developments, which the artist cleverly and inventively deployed in the field of visual arts."-Recollection GRM

Artist Biographies

"Video artist, director, composer by training. A major figure in the field of video creation, emerging from the boundaries between the arts, he is a pioneer in the use of electronic instruments.

After studying composition in concrete music at the ORTF Research Department (with, among others, Michel Chion), graduated from the CNSM in Paris (Pierre Schaeffer class) in 1971, he became a composer for the ORTF Musical Research Group and continues experimentation and creation in the fields of sound but also image. He turned to the medium of video in 1970, applying the technical and linguistic experiments of musique concrete.

Robert Cahen's work is recognizable by his way of treating slow motion, his way of exploring sound in relation to image to construct his poetic universe. He multiplies the effects of sliding, alteration of movement, contraction and dilation of time - processes which allow him to explore the metaphor of passage, the memory of images which come and disappear, to question the passing of time .

The works of Robert Cahen are present in various public collections in France and abroad: ZKM in Karlsruhe, Center for Contemporary Image in Geneva, AIACE in Milan, Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA), Frac/Alsace, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg (MAMCS), Center Pompidou, Harris Museum in Preston...

In 2010, the Jeu de Paume (Paris) will host a complete retrospective of his films and videos.

Winner of the Villa Médicis Hors les Murs in 1992, in 1995 he created a permanent video installation in Lille on the Euralille site.

A box set containing a large part of his production was released in 2011 (production gap), including a CD of his first musical compositions.

The MAMCS devoted an exhibition to him in 2014 on the theme of "glimpsing".
