Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"A Beaded Gesture captures Sandy Ewen and Jason Nazary in a bewildering live set recorded at Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. Ewen's prepared guitar and Nazary's drums and percussion share a deeply stimulating dynamic. Ewen has recorded with such diverse folks as Tamio Shiraishi, Roscoe Mitchell, and id m theft able, while Nazary has worked with Travis Laplante, Chris Williams, Notice Recordings alumnus Leo Chang, and the late great Jaimie Branch, among others. Having admired both their relentless collaborative energies over the past few years, it is with great joy that we present this tightly woven, roiling, playful, and cathartic album from two vital players in New York City's free improv scene."-Notice Recordings

"These three cassettes represent the various musical interests of Notice Recordings out of Kingston, New York. I started with the one I believe is the closest to improvised music-a duet between Sandy Ewen on prepared guitar and Jason Nazary on drums and percussion. I had not heard of either player before, but they have played with people such as Tamio Shiraishi, Roscoe Mitchell, id m theft able, Travis Laplante, Chris Williams, and Leo Chang. On March 20, 2021, they played at the Chamber Of Commerce in Brooklyn, and recordings are on this forty-some-minute cassette. The guitar might be prepared, but most of the time, it sounds like a guitar, such as the drums sound most of the time as such. These pieces capture some raw energy between the two players. There is hardly a moment of silence to be found in the music. It has the somewhat brutal attack of punk music, but without musical boundaries, completely free. The interaction between the two players is excellent, creating a delicate balance for each player to shine and to retract. I sometimes thought they were playing songs that night, shifting into a new one every few minutes. That was especially the case in 'Made Way For Ice', but maybe something that I heard in all of these pieces; maybe I was hallucinating. I don't know."-Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly

Artist Biographies

"Sandy Ewen was born in Toronto, Canada in 1985, Sandy Ewen received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin in 2008. Since then she has resided in Houston, TX where she pursues musical and visual projects and her architecture license. Ewen has released several albums, including a duo with guitarist Tom Carter, a trio with bassist Damon Smith & drummer Weasel Walter, and a rock album with Austin's Weird Weeds. Ewen's visual work is closely tied to her work in sound; she uses both mediums to explore texture, composition and materials.

Ewen's microcollages, enlarged through projection and digital printing, are an exploration of material and technique. Using a unique process pioneered by the artist, natural materials and polymers are torn, liquefied, scorched, melted, cut, and fused. When enlarged, the microscopic nuances of these manipulations are manifested in exquisite detail. Ewen has presented prints of her work at 14 Pews (2012), Spacetaker/Fresh Arts (2012), Khon's (2013) & Galeria Regina (2014).

As an improviser in both art and music, Ewen sees herself as guiding materials and space rather than executing a preconceived composition. "I like to explore mediums and materials and tease out their essence," says Ewen. "Working with slide projections has focused my eye on the subtitles of natural processes of decay and transformation. Through my work, I am asking questions of the materials rather than dictating answers." "

"Jason Nazary is a drummer/producer from Atlanta, GA. Moving to New York in 2005, Jason has already begun to make an impact on the improvised music scene. His raw approach to improvisation blends a variety of influences from Tony Williams to J Dilla to Morton Feldman to Lightning Bolt. Jason plays in a variety of different projects, most notably free jazz/punk/soul band Little Women, who have toured North America and Europe extensively and released three records, the latest of which being Lung, on AUM Fidelity. He also is featured on recordings with Joe Morris, Darius Jones, Dave Crowell, Olga Bell, Travis Reuter, to name a few."
