"Another recent release from European musicians, again featuring piano (appearance of the latter having skipped the previous entry), and before moving on to a handful of items from elsewhere, is The Book of Spirals from another quintet around Ernesto Rodrigues - here joined by Rodrigo Pinheiro, Pedro Carneiro (marimba with quarter tone extension), Hernani Faustino and Guilherme Rodrigues for this December 2019 performance of three tracks totaling nearly an hour.

Following the percussive and almost jazzily frenetic at times Pentahedron (as recorded the month prior, and as discussed here last month), this is once again a relatively extroverted performance - as also marked by the participation of Faustino. And following on his performance with Lisbon String Trio amid the understated and shifting modal coloring of Rhetorica (discussed here in August 2019), Pinheiro is also rather more at the center of the action here - in particular together with Carneiro, the two forming something of a tempered and percussive backbone duo for the improvisations as a whole. (And I only know Carneiro from his relatively central role on the older Chant, an enigmatic quintet album around Joao Camoes - and like Pentahedron, also involving Zingaro:

The circle is completed, perhaps, by the even earlier Earnear, first discussed here in December 2015, from a trio with Pinheiro and Camoes joining LST's Miguel Mira....) Faustino then brings a broadly communicative and steady articulation to The Book of Spirals, balancing (perhaps) the contrapuntal timbre music of the Rodrigueses, the latter functioning more to fill and tilt textures around the piano-marimba backbone.... From there, the music often builds impressive momentum, with various runs and swells, evoking both wild and more urban settings, including by becoming more rhetorical or mysterious by the end. In that sense, and also like Pentahedron, it becomes more like a "free music" album of a prior vein than some of Rodrigues' own recent explorations focusing more thoroughly on timbre and infrachromaticism....

It does start strongly and creatively, though, as so many of these novel groupings seem to do, into kind of an unwinding and then various waves, including through more classical moods. Extended techniques are not absent either, as indicated e.g. by quarter-tone marimba, making for yet another intriguing (augmented) improvising string ensemble album from Creative Sources, in yet another novel formation. Indeed, The Book of Spirals is rather aggressive and even flashy at times (especially given that it doesn't involve horns), but tender or provocative (or even almost static and procedural) at others."-Todd McComb's Jazz Thoughts

His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music.

The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements.

Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning.

Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups.

"Was born 1988 in Lisboa, Portugal and started playing cello and trumpet at Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa at the age of 7. In 1999 joined Conservatório Nacional de Música de Lisboa to study classical and music theory and in the current year recorded his first album - Multiples - with Ernesto Rodrigues and José Oliveira out on Creative Sources Recordings.

Apart from work in music ensembles ranging for contemporary classical to free improvisation, also works with live music poetry, theatre and film-music. After lengthy residency in Lisboa, (1988-2016) moved to Berlin and has been active as composer and improviser in the scene.

"After establishing his name during the Eighties as an electric bass guitarist in alternative rock bands, like the now legendary K4 Quadrado Azul, Hernani Faustino turned to avant-jazz and free improvised music and chose the double bass as his self-taught instrument. Two decades later of multiple interactions with Portuguese and international musicians, he's now considered one of the most intense and solid bassists in the Portuguese scene. The association he maintains with drummer Gabriel Ferrandini (RED trio, Nobuyasu Furuya Trio & Quintet, Rodrigo Amado Wire Quartet) has been pointed as a dynamic and powerful rhythm section. His visceral playing is well showed by the contortions of his face during a performance: he goes to the limits of pleasure and pain.

Music is his life: besides being a musician, he was one of the members of the label Clean Feed, considered one of the five more important on the planet in what regards jazz, and the Trem Azul Jazz Store, located in Lisbon. He also composed for theatre, produced radio programs, and wrote about music in a couple of magazines. A good part of his activity in photography is also music oriented: Faustino is one of the most accomplished stage photographers around. This says all about his passion and commitment.

"Rodrigo Pinheiro was born in 1973 in Covilhã, a small town in the center of Portugal. He started learning the piano when he was five at the Conservatory of Covilhã and later at the Conservatory of Lisbon until he was eighteen. He soon got involved with the free Portuguese improvisation scene, having played with Américo Rodrigues, José Oliveira, Nuno Rebelo, Rodrigo Amado, Luís Desirat, Bruno Parrinha or Ernesto Rodrigues. Pinheiro's intuitive approach to improvisation and exploration of the piano timbres, using both classical and extensive techniques, makes his music energic, polyrhythmic and full of contrasts. Moreover, he has honed his technique at workshops of improvisa- tion and composition where he has played with virtuous names, such as Carlos Zíngaro, Peter Kowald, Gunther Muller or Patrick Brennan. He has also performed with several musicians, like Hiroshi Kobayashi, Cristin Wilboltz, Nathan Fuhr, Blaise Siwula, Per Anders Nilsson, John Zorn, Nobuyasu Furuya, Jason Stein, Nate Wooley, John Butcher, Lotte Anker, Joe McPhee, Keir Neuringer, among others. "Pedro Carneiro is a Portuguese solo classical percussionist, marimba player, composer, and conductor. Pedro Carneiro is one of the very few percussion players to have made an international career as a soloist, and has established himself as one of the world's foremost solo percussionists, performing regularly throughout Europe, the Asia and the United States.

Carneiro has won several international competitions and awards, while performing regularly in festivals and venues such as the BBC Proms, Rhythm Sticks Festival, Queen Elisabeth Hall and Purcell Room in London, Sonorities Festival in Belfast, Macau International Music Festival, Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago, New Zealand International Festival of the Arts, Capital Theatre in Beijing, La Biennale di Venezia, Folles Journées (Lisbon), Schumannfest in Düsseldorf, Festival Classique au Vert in Paris, amongst others. Mr. Carneiro has also performed recitals in cities such as London, Paris, Los Angeles, Hanover, Seville, Lisbon, Seoul and Hong Kong.
