A heart-felt and yearning solo work by Boston multi-instrumentalist and improviser David Peck performed as a requiem for the passing of his father, Raymond Sheldon Peck, in September of 2020, recorded a few hours after receiving the news, in an emotional work with heavy-hearted percussion behind grief-struck clarinet, contrabass clarinet, and flutes.

With exotic instrumentation including clariphone, tarota, nadaswaram, mussette, flutes, clarinets, English horn, medieval pipe, whistles, concertina and gongs, Boston improviser David Peck performs over elements captured on a loop station, all decisions made in real time as he evolves this extended improvisation, creating a diverse and unusual recording.

Using a vast array of instruments categorized by clarinets, double reeds, flutes, free reed aerophones, strings, electronics, electroacoustic sound-makers, percussion, duck calls, sirens and voice, David Peck layers his improvisation into four renditions of himself, which he refers to as a Quartet of PEKs, this work focusing on new instruments developed by Tim Kaiser.

The sixth PEK Solo effort of 2020 in Boston-based improviser and composer David Peck's series, this album is a followup to his Clarinet Family album earlier in the year, here creating a virtual symphony of saxophones by layering his composition in the studio through four separate recordings, working in the vein of Rova Sax Quartet or the World Sax Quartet.

Part of Boston multi-wind/instrumentalist David Peck's "Orchestra of PEKs" series, this extended improvisation finds PEK interacting with a pre-recorded Ableton Mix of synthetics developed during his Semantic Notions album, over which he improvises on clarinets, saxophones double reeds & flutes, along with many percussive instruments, particularly a Chinese guqin.

A follow-up to Stretching the Fabric of Space, this solo release from David Peck presents an extended layered set of fize improvisations using a base of prerecorded and premixed tracks with some electronic processing to speed up and slow down, to raise and lower pitch, and to build up thick mixes of sounds from the same sonority set.

From the late 1990s to the early 2000s, drummer Jerome Bryterton & double bassist Damon Smith toured & recorded with legendary German multi-reedist Wolfgang Fuchs, who was a great influence on both musicians, here presenting a tribute to the late improviser through 11 recordings titled with quotes from Fuchs, and released with a bookmark from an improvisation workshop in Oakland.

Exploring how a composition can provide a sense of weightlessness, and influenced by the music of gamelan, krautrock, Tony Conrad & Arnold Dreyblatt, composer Alex Zethson structured these works to influence the 13 performers in his ensemble into a state of intense focus and listening as they strike, bow and pluck their instruments, creating an ecstatic sense of infinite motion.

Leveraging the rhythms of his Native American ancestry through deep tom drums, along with percussion focusing around clarion bells, Richmond, VA drummer/percussionist Scott Clark (Scott Clark 4tet, SCUO) brings his listener on a darkly diverse journey through six superb solo drum improvisations, laid out with resolute patience in an epic rhythmic journey.

A 3-part performance work exploring the effects of powerful climate forces affecting the poles of our planet, as Philip Samartzis and Eugene Ughetti use recordings of radar & scientific instrumentation used in upper atmospheric research along with custom built instruments, producing a unique series of textures, rhythmic cycles, resonances, and timbral phenomena.

The 2nd installment in percussionist Matt Weston's opera for percussion and electronics in a limited cassette + download, a cantankerous set of recordings that alternate disruption with introspectively unusual techniques realized through graphic, multidimensional and instantaneous scores, each piece a narrative exploring mental health struggles as they develop over time.

Insub.Meta director Cyril Bondi developed this work to question the life course of an artist--their starting point, daily routines and essence--realized through sound and narration in an intimate soundscape of six artists who converge, converse, accompany and answer each other, accompanied by sounds made during warm-ups, rituals and rehearsals.

A superb, inventive duo collusion between percussionist Ra Kalam Bob Moses and double bassist Damon Smith, continuing their collaborations that started with "Astral Plain Crash" with Vinny Golia, Henry Kaiser & Weasel Walter, here in concentrated form, recording and layer in the studio for 14 diverse dialogs using advanced techniques on drums, gongs, spring drums and double bass.

Reissuing their limited 2014 release on Joachim Nordwall Editions, the Oceans Of Silver & Blood duo of Joachim Nordwall on analog synthesizer, effects & tape and percussionist Mark Wastell on tam tam and timpani present two pieces, the first an environmental work underpinned by subtle percussion, the second a richly resonating work of threatening warmth.

Two extended sound collages and cut-ups from field recordings and percussion recorded during tours from 2014 to 2017, the title taken from a sign in one of the hotels that Jerman & Barnes stayed at, apt for the mix of punctuating locations, dissipating noise and unusual percussive passages, a fascinating journey that expands and contracts to make captivating stories.

The French new music group Ensemble 0 offer a second tribute to Pauline Oliveros and György Ligeti, performing Oliveros' beautifully floating 1975 composition "Horse Sings from Cloud" and Ligeti's 1953 composition "Musica Ricercata", a wonderfully complex and active composition with two percussionists performing on marimba, strings, piano and winds.

Composed from a combination of violin, percussion, vocals, field recordings & electronics by Rutger Zuydervelt, who initially merged unrelated recordings from violinist Anne Bakker (also on harmonica, kazoo & saw) and percussionist & sound artist Rene Aquarius, all three then overdubbing and editing the work to create this fascinating tapestry of hallucinogenic sound.

Unique to the vast catalog of Rutger Zuydervelt, aka Machinefabriek, this album was developed with Zuydervelt original material and then remixed by Matt Wand, Nick Storring and Phil Maguire, presenting the original highly rhythmic electronics at the base of "Prisma", then 4 remixes: "Scarlett's Blood Bubbles"; "Tactile Debt"; "Thigh Slapping Without Tears"; and "Wheats Flats".

The literal album title belies the subtle interplay between Swedish improvisers, cellist My Hellgren and Peter Söderberg, the latter known for his work on classical lute but here on guitar, oud and theorbo (a long-necked lute that adds additional bass notes), recording an extended, warmly beautiful and intricate acoustic dialog of gentle tension and masterful skill.

Composers and performers Jani Hirvonen and Johannes Schebler create a complex universe in sound & melody, a veritable forest of sound referencing global and spiritual environments, using warm instrumental sources, field recordings, world percussion and extended use of the studio in a satisfying series of journeys with a mysteriously transcendental and devotional feeling.

The 2nd release from Jason Kahn, here on voice and resonator guitar, with Christian Wolfarth on Chinese Cymbal, an antique marching snare and objects, recorded after a series of concerts across Europe in the fall of 2019, Kahn applying a percussionist's perspective to his guitar by playing it as a lap slide, as the two invoke an unusual incantatory spirit from their improvisations.

Two unconventional and experimenting improvisers--French-Japanese violist Frantz Loriot and Swiss percussionist Christian Wolfarth--in a deceptive album of acoustic improvisation that elusively takes on electric qualities in the hands of these two innovators, seducing the listener through unusual twists and turns of perfectly paced interactions.

A raucous and passionate concert led by the trio of Juozas Milasius on guitar, Tomas Kutavicius on piano, and Dalius Naujokaitis on drums, with the Lithuanian Young Composers Orchestra assisting on voice, cymbals, clapping, and "trampling", creating moments of adventurous disorder that lead to beautiful passages of heartfelt playing, in what must have been a marvel to experience.

Reissuing the first release on the Ictus Records label run by percussionist Andrea Centazzo, this 1976 album was the culmination of two weeks of touring through Italy with saxophonist Steve Lacy, presented as a set of improvised free duets investigating timbral relationships, the fragmentation of melody, and abrasive, provocative noise.

The debut of Ensemble Nist-Nah, a nine-piece collective group of French percussionists led by Nantes-based Australian drummer and percussionist Will Guthrie, incorporating a diverse set of influences including Gamelan performance, contemporary composition, noise and jazz into rich and ecstatic performances, an exciting album of informed approaches to modern and traditional percussion.

Each track of the Meridian, or Eastern desert land's traditional noon-time middle of the day, represents various stages, chronologically understood, of the day of an ανθρωπός (human), represented through deep double bass, drums, objects and electronics from Turin, Italy improvisers Michele Anelli and Nicholas Remondino.

Reflecting on the tragic events of 9/11, New York poet Steve Dalachinsky and drummer Federico Ughi performing also on sampler and voice, present seven poems about vulnerability, powerlessness and fear, accompanied by Ughi's deep drumming and sonic approach to his kit and samples, a profound example of Dalachinsky's insightful choice of words and images.

Recently discovered last copies of this album, presenting the very first time that Federico Ughi and Daniel Carter played together, recorded in Queens, NY around 2001, the drummer also performing on live sampling and voice, and the multi-instrumentalist Carter on saxophones, trumpet, flute and clarinet; an essential element in their now long history of collaboration.

Percussionist, drummer and improviser Federico Ughi performed this live recording in Brooklyn, 2001 using field recordings captured in Rome on a journey from Piazza S. Cosimato, Trastevere to Via Alberico, Borgo Pio, using those recordings, live sampling and live editing along with drum and percussion techniques to create a unique journey in sound.

Drummer Quentin Conrate works in contemporary music, musical theater and experimental art, concerned with space, sound and movement; here he is caught live at Festival Becoq in La Cooperative, Montolieu, France for an album of refracted and reverberant sound using a collection of objects described as "incomplete drums", and a wall.

An exciting album of free jazz from the Australia/London-based Cyclone Trio, their name apt in the feverish interaction between saxophonist Massimo Magee and dual drummers Tony Irving and Tim Green on the opening work, the album patterned like a storm that slows introspectively for a quiet eye, then drums up a final gale force that dissipates to a sort of calm; brilliant.

Active in the modern creative music scene around Germany and The Netherlands, drummer/percussionist Hendrik Eichler explores a variety of "Dimensions" and "Transcendence" in solo percussive playing, using traditional and extended techniques, from highly active to deeply introspective moods, assisted at time through digital technology.

An immersive album of solo percussion, slowly sculpted through bowed cymbals, tension across drum heads, resonance and extraneous percussive elements, from New York-based experimental percussionist, composer & improviser, each piece unfolding a meditative yet substantial story built of powerful elements, creating mysterious and often daunting soundscapes.

The core trio of the Leap of Faith Orchestra comprising multi-reedist & wind player David Peck, also on percussive devices, with Glynis Lomon on cello, aquasonic and voice, and Yuri Zbitnoff on drums & percussions, with special guests Kat Dobbins on trombone and Bob Moores on trumpet & flugelhorn, in an evolving set of strong harmonic, percussive & lyrical interaction.

The core Leap of Faith trio of David Peck (PEK) on winds & percussion, Glynis Lomon on cello, aquasonic & voice, and Yuri Zbitnov on drums & percussion, a subunit of Boston's Leap of Faith Orchestra, is joined by Jim Warshauer (reeds) and Eric Dahlman (trumpet, overtone voice) for an exciting and far-ranging improvisation of exotic instrumentation and intention.
