Artist Biographies

"Chiyoko Szlavnics was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, and has livedin Berlin, Germany, since 1998.

She studied music at the University of Toronto, and privately withthe composer James Tenney.

She composes for a wide variety of instruments and ensembles, oftencombining them with sinewaves. A central aspect of her work is the audiblephenomenon called "beating", which is highlighted through her particular use ofextended sustains, glissandi, tuning systems, and her way of combiningacoustic instruments with electronics.

Drawings became the starting point for her compositional process aroundthe year 2003. But in 2009 & 2010, several drawings series suddenly emerged, which distinctly belonged to the field of visual art. Szlavnics now practicesin both disciplines, and not only are her drawings heard in concert, buther music is sometimes also seen in exhibitions in Europe andNorth America."

"Isaiah Ceccarelli. Born Chetwynd, British Columbia, Canada, 1978. Residence: Montréal, Québec. Composer, Performer (drum set, percussion).

Isaiah Ceccarelli is a drummer, improviser, and composer based in Montréal. His music has been qualified as "one of the most original approaches to come through our offices in recent times" (Marc Chénard, La Scena Musicale) and he has been described as possessing "a writing style with rare personality in this musical context" (Thierry Lepin, Jazzman Magazine). He participates in numerous creative music projects with Michel F Côté, Pierre-Yves Martel, Lori Freedman, Jean Derome, Bernard Falaise, Joshua Zubot and Philippe Lauzier, amongst others. He plays with Félix Stüssi and Ray Anderson, as well as with the Acadian singer Marie-Jo Thério. Proud ambassador of a new generation of creative musicians in Québec, his collaborations have led him on tour in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. Isaiah has composed music for two of his own albums, Bréviaire d'épuisements and Lieux-dits (both on the Ambiances Magnétiques label), and for ensembles and musicians such as Quatuor Bozzini, Ensemble Allogène, the violist Jennifer Thiessen, and Ensemble Kô. He sings with the Schola Saint-Grégoire (Gregorian chant).

A seasoned musician and composer, Isaiah Ceccarelli is, in the words of Charles Collard from La Scena Musicale, "a jewel in the crown of the Montréal scene and his presence is felt on several fronts at the same time."

The track is a very intimate conversation between a person and god, and the conversation is a critique by the person of god and one of god's disciples. -Radwan Moumneh

Recorded and produced by Radwan Moumneh in Montreal. Mastered by Harris Newman. From the 2013 album Mo7it Al-Mo7it (Constellation Records, CST093). Licensed courtesy of Constellation Records.

8. For MA
Electrochemical improvisation by Erin Sexton, using water, epsom salt, oscillators, electromagnetic amplifiers, copper wire, and nine-volt batteries.

Using simple analog circuits, I experiment with salt solutions as signal processors, searching for links between the cosmic and the molecular through sound. Multiple wires converge in a single solution, creating fragile and chaotic feedback systems from which both noise and strange patterns emerge. The process of ions separating from molecules is sonified, creating a tactile link with matter, while changing both the colour and composition of the solution, which I then crystallize. -Erin Sexton

Recorded in the artist's studio in Montreal in April 2014.

9. Live in Silent Barn Audio available on CD only.
Live improvisation by Gil Delindro.

In this performance, I extended the variety of sounds I've been working with through my Canadian tour-mixing inputs from amplified ice cracking, water, feedback, sound sculptures, and field recordings. The several layers of sounds are processed and performed in real time, using the mixer as a main instrument-a new approach that brought me a strange acousmatic feeling while playing .
-Gil Delindro

Recorded in concert at Silent Barn in Brooklyn, N.Y., on March 24, 2014.

10. The Night Paddler Audio available on CD only.
Composed and performed by Michael Trommer, using Edirol R-09HR audio recorder, Audio-Technica AT822 microphone, Cold Gold hydrophone, home-made microphone array, and contact microphone.

This piece consists of field recordings made during solo late-night paddles in the summer of 2013. The intense darkness and sonic filtering effects of the local landscape during these treks engendered what were striking and uncanny acousmatic experiences.
-Michael Trommer

Recorded and composed at Big Bob Lake, Ontario, in Summer 2013.
