Artist Biographies

Bix Beiderbecke (1903-1931) was an American jazz cornetist, pianist and composer from Davenport, Iowa, whose clear, lyrical tone and unusually coherent improvisational phrasing made him one of the defining soloists of 1920s jazz. Largely self-taught, he first came to prominence with The Wolverines, recording early landmark sides for Gennett in 1924, before working with Jean Goldkette, Frankie Trumbauer and, later, Paul Whiteman's orchestra. His solos on recordings such as "Singin' the Blues" and "I'm Coming, Virginia" helped establish a more reflective, formally shaped approach to jazz improvisation, while his piano piece "In a Mist" revealed the influence of Impressionist harmony and an interest in composition beyond the dance-band idiom.

Though his career was brief and often overshadowed by struggles with alcoholism and ill health, Beiderbecke left a body of work that deeply affected fellow musicians and later generations of jazz players. Distinct from the bravura force of Louis Armstrong, his music favored economy, poise, melodic invention and a bell-like purity of sound, pointing toward later developments in jazz balladry, chamber-like ensemble writing and the cool jazz sensibility. His early death at 28 helped create one of jazz's enduring legends, but his importance rests in the recordings themselves: concise, lucid performances whose harmonic curiosity, relaxed swing and singular emotional restraint continue to mark him as one of early jazz's most original voices.
