Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"HIIT is a piano trio of contemporary improvised music, with compositional frames that feed focused real-time composition. You hear aesthetics reminiscent of the improvised and composed music of the 20th and 21st century. You hear hot blooded energy which is not afraid of lyric melody, abstract contemplation, and structured formal matrixes.Connecting the new Portugal and Italy music scenes, it is composed by the pianist Simone Quatrana, double bassist Andrea Grossi and drummer Pedro Melo Alves.

"...three distinct characters developing layers and plateaus of an inspiring soundscape/energy field. The music is courageous in its commitment to colorful abstraction, and virtuosic in the expression of the content. (...) this is a wonderful record that will energize the listener."-Hank Roberts, from the liner notes

Simone Quatrana is an Italian jazz improviser and pianist. With several bands he has performed in Italy and Europe, making himself known in the environment of radical improvisation, playing with Peter Brotzmann, Mikolaj Trzaska, Rudy Mahall and Ken Vandermark with whom he recorded two albums and played an European tour. He won the National Award of Arts for Best Soloist and he was listed twice on Top Jazz as the Best New Italian Talent of 2020 and 2021, in the magazine Musica Jazz.

Andrea Grossi is an Italian double bass player and composer. Critically acclaimed as one of the best new Italian talents on the rise, he has performed in important festivals and theaters in Italy and abroad and has released recordings for various labels, including three records as leader: Lubok, Four Winds, Songs and Poems (We Insist! Records). He has always been interested in all kinds of avant-garde and experimental music, with a special focus on improvised music. In 2017 he founded his trio, Blend 3. He has also worked in dance and performing arts. His international collaborations: Barre Phillips, Gyorgy Kurtag Jr., Tobias Delius, Eyvind Kang, Aruan Ortiz, Marcelo Nisinman, Steve Swell, Walter Thompson, Michel Doneda, Thomas de Pourquery, Cristina Zavalloni, Lynn Cassiers and Diana Torto.

Pedro Melo Alves is one of the most prominent drummers and composers in the recent avant-garde music scene in Portugal. Artist Biographies

"Simone Quatrana began studying the piano at an early age and then attended the Frosinone Conservatory. He has always been reluctant to musical academism, studying as a self-taught until moving to Milan where he had the opportunity to deepen improvisation techniques.

With Diverse Formazioni he performed in Italy and Europe, making himself known above all in the radical improvisation environment playing with Peter Brotzmann, Mikolaj Trzaska, Rudy Mahall and Ken Vandermark with whom he recorded two albums and played on a European tour."

"Pedro Melo Alves is one of the most unsettled new minds in Portugal, avid for something more, yet unknown.

Having been awarded with the Bernardo Sassetti composition award in 2016, distinguished as the National Musician of the Year in 2017 by jazz.pt and in 2019 with the Premio Internazionale Giorgio Gaslini he's been increasingly present in the European music scene, presenting his projects in events such as 12 Points Festival (2018), European Jazz Conference (2018) or Jazzahead (2019).

Born in 1991, in Porto, Portugal, Pedro starts studying music in 2000. Enrolls at the Jazz Drums superior course in 2011 at the Porto Superior School of Music (ESMAE), having lessons with Michael Lauren and Carlos Azevedo, and leaves the course in 2013 to study classical and jazz piano with Abe Rabade and Daniel Bernardes. The participation on several workshops in Portugal, Spain and Italy led him to meet and study with some of the contemporary jazz scene figures, such as Danilo Perez, John Escreet and Ralph Alessi. Enters in 2015 on the Musical Composition superior course at the Lisbon Superior School of Music (ESML), where he studies with Sérgio Azevedo, José Luís Ferreira and António Pinho Vargas.

Today he plays as a drummer and composer in innovative modern jazz bands (Omniae Ensemble, The Rite of Trio, In Igma), contemporary electroacoustic projects (his solo O, CACO.MEAL or his trio symph), improvised music (with João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Luís Vicente, Theo Ceccaldi, Ricardo Jacinto, Jacqueline Kerrod, Pedro Branco), instrumental rock (Catacombe), soundtracks for Theatre and Dance (with Schaubühne's Peter Kleinert, Carlota Lagido or his own art collective Caos) and erudite composition."
