"Populista is proud to present a new music reinterpratation by Raphael Rogiński. After Coltrane, he is now paired by Genowefa Lenarcik to perform music from Kurpie. The singer is a daughter of legendary Stanisław Brzozowy, famous caretaker of kurpian folk, the tradition she is now developing. According to Rogiński, the only musicians he can compare her with are bluesmen from Sahara. Together, they form a duo just as unconventional as natural. In the end, Żywizna in kurpian language stands for Nature."-Bolt Records
"Kurpie (Polish pronunciation: [ˈkurpjɛ]) is one of a number of ethnic regions in Poland, noted for its unique traditional customs, such as its own types of traditional costume, traditional dance and distinctive type of architecture and livelihoods. Kurpie is also the name of the people of this culture.
The Kurpie region is located in Poland on a lowland plain called the Mazovian Region (Mazowsze), which was once covered over by two forests known as the Puszcza Zielona (the Green Wilderness) and the Puszcza Biała (the White Wilderness).
The Green Wilderness (Puszcza Zielona) is usually associated with the White Wilderness (Puszcza Biała), and together the two forests are often referred to as the Kurpie Forest (Puszcza Kurpiowska) because the two forests were populated by inhabitants who, over the centuries of isolation, developed a unique culture of their own, called Kurpie.
On today's map, the Kurpie region comprises Mazovia, Podlasie and, to a small extent, the Warmia and Mazury region. Populated areas in Kurpie today are generally in the towns of Myszyniec and Ostrołęka and the villages of Czarnia, Dylewo, Jednorożec, Kadzidło, Lipniki, Łyse and Zbójna."-Wikipedia
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Raphael Roginski Raphael Roginski, born 1977 in Frankfurt, Darmstadt Government Region, Hesse, Germany, currently residing in Poland. Composer and performer, cultural animator and student of musical folklore. He started playing electric guitar at the age of thirteen. Educated in jazz and classical, he also studied musical theory and ethnomusicology. Since the very beginning of his creative work he has been focusing primarily on improvisation rooted in blues and jazz, as well as on ethnic and folk music. It is the combination of those two paths that best defines his style both in terms of composing and performing. Deeply rooted in the Jewish culture, Rogiński always sought to accommodate it in his art and this search resulted in the conception of two projects which he leads: Shofar and Cukunft. He also acts as art director of festivals showcasing new Jewish culture - like Tikkun, Varshe or Mizrach - and as consultant for projects featured at those festivals. Another source of inspiration for Rogiński is the primitive music of America, blues and 1960s rock. Filtered and processed, it can be heard in both his solo and band performances. A deep analysis of techniques employed by classical blues guitarists and the knowledge of instruments of the 1950s and 1960s form the basis of Rogiński's sound. Inspired, on the other hand, by American experimental music (Harry Patch, Henry Cowell and others), Rogiński formed the band Spinalonga. Research of European 'early music' resulted in the recent release of Rogiński gra Bacha (Rogiński Plays Bach), a collection of Bach's pieces played on prepared guitars. Rogiński is also involved in projects stemming from the international new jazz scene. His compositions, improvisations and interpretations are often used as soundtrack for various artistic events - documentaries and animations (e.g. Man Ray, Viking Elling), performing acts (J. Kalina), traditional and multimedia theatre plays ( ), and literature readings (Tadeusz Różewicz, Mieczysław Myśliwski, Mieczysław Abramowicz, Andrzej Stasiuk). Performing mainly on his own artistic terms, he gives solo concerts and leads various ensembles. Currently, his ongoing musical projects include the aforementioned Shofar, Cukunft and Spinalonga, as well as the trio with Macio Moretti and Marcin Masecki, the duo Sisters with DJ Lenar and solo concerts. Rogiński played or collaborated with, among others, Kazuchisa Uchichashi, Le Quan Ninh, Noel Akchote, Frederic Blondy, Keith Rowe, Joe Giardullo, Axel Dorner, Thomas Lehn, Andrew Sharpley, John Edwards, John Tilbury, Brigit Ulher, Yale Strom , Tim Daisy, Dave Rempis, Mark Tokar, Mark Sanders, Clayton Thomas, Kris Wenders, Peter Jaquemyn, Wacław Zimpel, Emiter, Macio Moretti, DJ Lenar, Daniel Pigonski, Konstanty Usenko, Jarek Bester, Ireneusz Socha, Vadim O.Pavluk, Ryszard Latecki, Rafal Mazur, Piotr Bukowski, Arszyn, Mikolaj Trzaska, Maria Peszek. Rogiński frequently participates in music workshops, competitions and festivals of contemporary music, including the Jewish Culture Festival in Cracow, Simcha in Wrocław, Four Cultures in Łódź, Ha Motiv Ha Jehudi in Warsaw, Rainbow Coalition Festival in Hanover (USA), Warsaw Autumn, Gaudeamus Music Week in Hague, Ars Electronica in Linz, G2 Music for creative chamber orchestra, NuFolk in Gdańsk, Fete de la Musique in Paris, and many others. ^ Hide Bio for Raphael Roginski • Show Bio for Genowefa Lenarcik "Genowefa Lenarcik, born in 1940 in the village of Krobia, near Ostrołęka, is one of five daughters of the folk singing legend Stanisław Brzozowy (1901-1983), whose voice recordings are up to this day listened to by traditional music reconstructionists, ethnomusicologists and researchers. Genowefa Lenarcik took after her father. She inherited Stanisław Brzozowy's talent and singing style and gladly shares the rich repertoire of her family with others. A few years ago her daughter made contact with the Eastern Borderland Music Foundation (Fundacja Muzyka Kresów) and since then the foundation researchers and music lovers pay frequent visits to their home to learn singing, talk and hear stories of the past. Genowefa Lenarcik says her father was not a strict teacher. He would not interrupt or scold. He only sometimes told her to put "more kulasiki" into her singing. Kulasiki being the distinctive uptwists at the end of musical phrases, which Profesor Jan Stęszewski described as switching the voice to falsetto, and professor Piotr Dahlig as "yodeling manner of closing the verses". Mrs Genowefa has taken over the same teaching style as her father, though she is not always as gentle. The concert shall present the music of the Brzozowy family, who have created their own singing style. Genowefa Lenarczyk will perform alongside her students: Olga Kozieł, Ewa Grochowska, Bartłomiej Drozd and Paweł Grochocki. For the first time the audience will be able to have a peek inside the kitchen door where they usually meet to practice." ^ Hide Bio for Genowefa Lenarcik
