"Bo Van der Werf (°1969) graduates from the Conservatory of Music in Amsterdam.

Early on, he works out a dual career path: as sideman on the one hand and as leader of his own projects on the other.

So, he is involved right from the start when the Brussels Jazz Orchestra is founded and still has his permanent spot in the band.

In addition, he performs with several other ensembles, including Septych (Bram De Looze's septet), Lidlboj (with pianist-keyboarder Jozef Dumoulin), Dragons (French saxophonist Alexandra Grimal's quintet), Workshop (with French saxophonist Stéphane Payen), the Sylvain Cathala Septet and MikMâäk. He also composes music for documentaries and dance performances and there is the collaboration with contemporary music ensemble Ictus. He plays on the first Aka Moon albums as well.

He develops his personal vision with his band Octurn, which just like the BJO sees the light of day in the Brussels jazz club Sounds. Here he focuses on deepening principles in line with Olivier Messiaen's ideas and contemporary classical music, and linking all of this to jazz idioms and improvisation.

Quite exceptional in that respect are the recordings with the monks of the Gyuto Monastery where this vision rises to a crescendo.

During the upcoming concerts in the Sounds, his quartet Songbook of Changes takes centre-stage with Fabian Fiorini, Jozef Dumoulin and Dré Pallemaerts within its ranks."

"Erik Vermeulen (born 15 October 1959 in Ypres, Belgium) is a Belgian jazz pianist. He entered the Belgian jazz scene when he was 22 with his trio. At the time, it featured Heyn Van de Geyn on bass and Dré Pallemaerts on drums. Soon after that, he started performing with different jazz bands and musicians including the Frank Vaganée Quartet, Erwin Vann Quartet and Peter Hertmans.

He performed with international stars like Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, Joe Lovano, Steve Grossman, David Schnitter, Art Farmer, Bob Mover, Teddy Edwards, Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Michael Moore and Barre Phillips.

He was often a soloist with the BRT jazz orchestra. In 1998, he represented Belgium in the European Radio Union Big Band in Stockholm.

During his career, the musicians from his trio have changed: Jean-Louis Rassinfosse and Félix Simtaine, then Philippe Aerts and Dré Pallemaerts, Otti Van Der Werf and Eric Thielemans.

Since 1995, Erik has toured and recorded with the following bands: Bart Defoort Quartet, Ben Sluijs Quartet, Manu Hermia Quartet and Marta Mus.

Since 1995, he has been a member of the Ben Sluijs Quartet, with whom he recorded four CDs. The last one, Flying Circles, is part of the CD box "The Finest in Belgian Jazz" (released on De Werf).

In 1997, he recorded a CD with his band Icarus Consort (consisting of Erwin Vann, Pierre Bernard, Nicolas Thys and Stéphane Galland). The project emphasis is on improvisation.

Performing solo or in duo with Pierre Bernard, Daniel Stokart or Eric Thielemans, led to the founding of the "Groundwork" collective (2000).

In 2001, he recorded his CD "Songs of Minutes" with Salvatore La Rocca and Jan De Haas. In the same year, he recorded the album Stones with Ben Sluijs and made recordings with the project "Rrauw" of Eric Thielemans, with Barre Philips and Jean-Yves Evrard.

In 2002, he got to know Eric Surmenian (double bass) and Marek Patrman (drums). With this trio, he recorded Inner City from the CD box "The Finest in Belgian Jazz".

These days, Erik Vermeulen is teaching jazz piano at the Antwerp and Ghent conservatories.

In November 2003, he received the Belgian Golden Django for musician of the year."

"Pianist Jozef Dumoulin (Belgium) redefined the Fender Rhodes keyboard through a scope that is at the same time fully contemporary, eclectic and highly personal. He is the first to present a full solo program featuring the instrument. Furthermore he is known for his open and luminous approach to the piano and to music in general, always anchored in tradition without being burdened by it. Besides the Fender Rhodes solo, his own projects include The Red Hill Orchestra (a trio with Ellery Eskelin and Dan Weiss) and a duo with Benoît Delbecq.

Highly-demanded as a sideman, Jozef Dumoulin has recorded and toured with the finest of musicians in the domain of jazz, improvised music, rock and traditional music. He currently lives in Paris."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"The Mandarin word "Yun" means "Cloud" and it describes quite well the purposes of this new project lead by the Belgian singer Lynn Cassiers: the exploration by an electro-acoustic ensemble of the traditional roots of that music we call jazz. Cassiers re-arranged eight standards of the American Songbook, giving different harmonic and rhythmic structures to the classic melodies of songs like "But Not for Me" and "I Love You" and providing new grounds to improvise with it.

The "Yun" in question is made of the possible and improbable relationships between musical patrimony and invention, and this record is "an ode to anachronisms and other time-space related discrepancies". If, as Cassiers verifies, "our indentity today seems less and less defined by what is supposed to be our own heritage", the resulting re-creations are simultaneously a delight for any open ears and food for thought. A proof that, in this new century, tradition and contemporaneity can really "find a way to co-exist"..."-Clean Feed
