West Coast cornetist Bobby Bradford captured live in 2013 for a superb set at the Center for the Arts in Los Angeles, part of the Open Gate Theatre Sunday evening concert series, in a quartet with Hafez Modirzadeh on alto sax, Mark Dresser on bass, and Alex Cline on drums. The playing is well rounded, bluesy and melodic with strong playing, blending free and traditional approaches in compelling ways. The group interplay is excellent, at times playing collectively, at other times laying back for the soloist. Compositions are from members of the band, with Bradford only credited for one group composition. Each player brings their individual strengths through their writing, in particular Modirzadeh and Dresser's compositions are upbeat and flexible pieces, bringing out the strongest playing on the album. An excellent concert from four masterful players.
