"Michael Jaeger keeps looking in the quartet KEROUAC with the pianist Vincent Membrez, the bassist Luca Sisera and the drummer Norbert Pfammatter since 2005 persistently and with more and more success for the labile balance between selffulfillment and control. Between freedom and structure. Between individualism and the collective. Today KEROUAC is on such an advanced level of the collective consciousness, that the four can launch each other almost telepathically into creative spaces. More than that: the collective understanding generates such a pull that even the guests Greg Osby and Philipp Schaufelberger are integrated almost on the spot, almost as if they were members of the band for years.
They make most inspired improvised or composed music that does not aim to anything but itself, let alone any ideology whatsoever. Their music is even allowed to swing every now and again, it often develops a bewitching melodiousness yet goes audaciously to the borders of the atonal or noise making. In other words: It roots in the centre of "jazz" and at the same time far outside any cliché, thus really happening in the very moment. So this is what Whitney Balliett, the doyen ofjazz criticism, used to call this music: "the sound of surprise"."-Intakt
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Greg Osby "Saxophonist, composer, producer, educator and curator Greg Osby has been a formidable presence on the international music scene as a leader of his own ensembles and as a guest artist with other acclaimed groups for the past 39 years. Highly regarded for his insightful and innovative approach to composition and performance, Osby is an inspired voice among the ranks of improvising musicians. He has earned numerous awards and critical acclaim for his recorded works and passionate live appearances and has been recognized by The New York Times as one of the "most provocative musical thinkers of his generation". Born and reared in St. Louis, Greg Osby began his professional music career in 1975, after three years of private studies on clarinet, flute and alto saxophone. Coming from a vibrant and musical city, Osby showed an early interest in the performing arts and spent his years in secondary school with a heavy involvement in Blues and Jazz groups. In 1978 Osby furthered his musical education at Howard University (Washington, D.C.) where he majored in Jazz Studies. He continued his studies at the Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA) from 1980 to 1982. Upon relocating to New York in late 1982, Osby quickly established himself as a notable and in demand sideman for artists as varied as Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Jack DeJohnette, Andrew Hill, Freddie Hubbard, Muhal Richard Abrams, Woody Shaw, Jim Hall, Chick Corea, The Grateful Dead as well as with many other international new music ensembles. In addition to his rigorous performance schedule, Osby devotes a generous amount of his time to educational activities. Mr. Osby is also a founding member of the innovative M-BASE music collective. In 1985 Osby was invited to to join Jack DeJohnette's innovative group, "Special Edition". It was as a member of this ensemble Osby was able to fine tune the more challenging aspects of his conception in an open ended, no holds barred musical situation. Says Osby, "My musical thinking for performance and composition advanced by light years as Jack was open to my input and was very encouraging in pushing me to to maintain a steady flow of experimentation. It marked a major turning point in my development as an artist." After recording 4 projects for JMT/Polygram, Osby signed with Blue Note Records in 1990 and recorded fifteen outstanding recordings for that label as a leader. In 2007, Osby launched his own label, "Inner Circle Music", which serves as a platform for many of today's brightest artists. In his words: "I'd like to be regarded as provocateur and an experimentalist. What I do is based upon the greater aspects of sound, structure, and science as well as intuition, intellect and the human spirit." Musically, he likes to operate in the charged environment between composition and improvisation. He is frequently seen on stage at various festivals and jazz clubs across Europe in well over 100 concerts each year, whereby some tours and concerts have already taken him to Egypt, China and America. To date, he has been involved in over 30 audio releases, often produced in cooperation with Swiss Radio SRF 2. Most recently, Luca Sisera has also started working as a composer for his own quintet "ROOFER". As interdisciplinary projects have always interested him, Luca Sisera has also worked with authors, cabaret artists, dancers and visual artists, among others, as well as on theatre and film productions. A question that not only postpones all other questions regarding people and art, but at the same time reveals the honesty of a musician who sees music as a guide to the pathless land. "My most important influences are my teachers Billy Brooks, Pierre Favre, the great musicians of the jazz tradition, John Cage, all the musicians I was able to play with, the sounds that surround me, the great wise men of the East and the silence that they recommend to us." Norbert Pfammatter was born on September 12, 1959 in the middle of the Swiss mountains, in Visp. He spent his youth in Brig, preferably outdoors in the beautiful and formative nature. Fascinated by Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis and Frank Zappa, he began playing drums at the age of 13 and increasingly moved his free time to the cellars of the small Valais town. After six years of self-taught research into his instrument, the young drummer decided in 1978 to leave the conducive peace and yet inhibiting isolation of the small town. He enrolled as a student at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern and, after a year and a half of lessons with Bob Cunningham and Heinz Lieb, finally met the great drummer Billy Brooks, whose presence in Bern can safely be described as a happy coincidence. Inspired by the suddenly diverse stimuli and the inspiring encounter with the music of Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, Norbert Pfammatter switched to the Swiss Jazz School vocational school after graduating from high school in 1980. The first important musical connections develop, such as with the Hungarian bassist Tibor Elekes, the trumpeter Umberto Arlati, the trombonist Robert Morgenthaler, the saxophonist Andy Scherrer and the North German pianist Jochen Bohnes. When Norbert Pfammatter completed his studies at the SJS with a diploma in 1985, he was hired there as a teacher in the same year. After his first recordings, including with the formation around the saxophonist Beat Wenger, he was employed as a drum set teacher at the Biel Conservatory in 1989, the intensive and ongoing collaboration with the saxophonist Donat Fisch, and the influential musical encounter with the American cellist Muneer B. Fenell and his "Rhythm String Band", as well as the Detroit drummer Doug Hammond and the adventurous collaboration with bassist Bänz Oester that continues to this day. Starting with Turkish, Bulgarian, Romanian and Yiddish folk music and mostly odd meters, Norbert Pfammatter has been contributing his playing to the "Schönhaus Express" ensemble of the saxophonist and composer Sascha Schönhaus since 1993 and on three recordings. In 1994, Norbert Pfammatter became a lecturer in drums at the Lucerne University of Music. In the selected overview of the following years, the trio G.A.S., founded in 1996, is said to be with the pianist Hans Feigenwinter and the bassist Bänz Oester, which released the much praised recording of the "Great American Songs" three years later. Likewise the ongoing collaboration with the composer and clarinetist Don Li, which resulted in the CD "Trigon" in 2000. Equally important is the drum ensemble founded in 2001 by drummer Pierre Favre, as well as the quartet around singer Elina Duni, with the highly praised debut CD "Baresha" in 2008, and then especially with the two productions "Matanë Malit" and "Dallëndyshe". for ECM Records. The drum improvisation duo Traktor met a painful end with the unique drummer and friend Fabian Kuratli, due to his illness and shockingly early death in 2008. Norbert Pfammatter plays concerts in Europe, Australia, Asia, Africa, Latin America and the USA and also considers himself lucky to have worked with many exponents of the national scene, as well as with many big and small stars of the international scene." ^ Hide Bio for Norbert Pfammatter
