"Fresh Fish (Poissons Frais) is the first album by Durio Zibethinus, a duo of two young musicians from Orleans with saxophonist Quentin Biardeau (saxophone soprano, alto, tenor, clarinet, recorder, sax, percussion, mt-11 casiotone, cassette recorder) Cellist Valentin Ceccaldi (cello, prepared bass drum, electric vocal guide, piano with blades, dan-bau, pvc tube). Looking at the instrumentation, we can think of art together of Chicago. And not without reason in fact. For Durio Zibethinus does not hide his roots free jazz and jazz on one side: suraigus to sax, free bass line, blast to percussion.
But in addition, the duo shows a freedom and an opening that are in the tradition of the aeoc: the musicians do not hesitate to use non-traditional instruments, sometimes poor, sometimes incongruous, and especially they 'Hesitate to explore the sound as such as on "Carpe" and "Sillure-spatula sturgeon" or to refer to jazz at other times. Then by listening to "Gardon", I think with the FMP130 of the trio Brotzmann / Van Hove / Bennink with the shocking use of the big prepared and the piano with blades, with of course a tenor in great form and very energetic.
Durio Zibethinus balances the use of power, melodies, and sound exploration with creativity and energy. During the five plays, what is nice is that the duo always explores music in an organic way, whether the duo explores long notes held and bumble bees, or plays on energy and powerful dynamics, The two musicians are together, and of course, their sound too. Beautiful free jazz contemporary, which manages to be inventive without hiding or denying its origins."-http://improv-sphere.blogspot.fr
