Artist Biographies

Maria Laurette Friis is a Copenhagen-based Danish composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and singer active in the contemporary jazz and experimental music scenes, known for her distinctive voice and exploratory approach to sound. A versatile artist, she works across composition, improvisation, and sound art, often blending elements of jazz, electronic music, and avant-garde practices into fluid, texturally rich performances.

Friis first gained recognition as the lead songwriter of the alternative jazz group Tys Tys and has since developed a wide-ranging career through solo projects and collaborations with notable improvisers and composers. Her work frequently emphasizes spontaneous creation, using the voice as both a lyrical and abstract instrument, and engaging in deeply responsive musical dialogues within ensemble and duo settings.

Active on the Scandinavian improv scene, she has collaborated with a broad network of artists and ensembles, contributing to projects that prioritize openness, texture, and unconventional musical language, establishing her as a unique and expressive voice within Denmark's vibrant experimental music community.

"Pianist and singer Johanna Borchert has long since established herself as a major fixture both inside and outside the Berlin jazz scene. She works tenaciously at making permeable the divisions between jazz, pop and avant-garde. With formations such as Schneeweiss & Rosenrot or Little Red Suitcase, she contrasts fragile emotionality with formal strictness. Some of her pieces are acoustically intimate, others are electronically reserved, and often, these levels pervade each other. With her latest project, Johanna Borchert consciously shifts her vocal skills to the fore. And she knows how to lend a nonchalant, melancholic expression to these very personal songs that often arose out of intensely intimate moments."

"Anne Efternøler (Anne Andersson, she/her) is a trumpet player, improviser and composer based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Efternøler works in the field of improvisation and modern/contemporary music primarily on the Scandinavian scenes. Her artistic output is characterized by a strong intuitive, or even emotional, connection to both her co-performers and the audience, as well as a distinctive relationship to her instrument, which she consideres a percussion instrument as much as a wind instrument."
