" is a musician, artist and writer. He was born 1960 in New York and grew up in Los Angeles. He re-located to Europe in 1990 and is currently based in Zürich.

As an electronic musician, vocalist and drummer Kahn collaborates regularly with many musicians, both in improvised settings and in the context of graphical scores which he composes for specific groups.

Kahn has exhibited his installations in museums, galleries, art spaces and public sites internationally. These works focus on the idea of space: the conceptual and physical juncture points, its production and dissolution, and our relation to it as a political, social and environmental medium.

Kahn's other activities include sound pieces for radio, film, dance and theater. He has also designed numerous CD, LP and cassette covers. As a writer, his work has appeared in books, magazines and as liner notes to many audio publications.

Performing regularly around the world, Kahn has given concerts throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia, China, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey and South Africa.

In 2011 Kahn started the Editions imprint to publish his own recordings and writings."

Lash, Dominic / Mark Wastell
Polyvalent Creativity
(Confront)
Bringing together two prolific figures in the UK's improvised music community, guitarist Dominic Lash and drummer/percussionist Mark Wastell explore a stripped yet expansive duo format that nods toward free jazz, where a seemingly conventional setup gives way to a language rooted in texture, gesture, and sonic detail rather than pulse or harmonic progression.
Abrahams, Chris / Mark Wastell
Two Thousand Sacred Steps
(Confront)
Expanding their earlier duo work into a live setting, pianist Chris Abrahams and percussionist Mark Wastell engage in a patient, textural session of free improv, where rippling piano figures and resonant cymbal washes unfold in a deeply attentive dialog, shaping a meditative, slowly evolving sound world defined by subtle interplay, spatial awareness, and restrained, ritual-like intensity.
Kahn, Jason
Dotolim (2023)
(Editions)
Composed for the Seoul experimental space Dotolim and originally realized in 2009, Jason Kahn's graphic score is revisited here with a new generation of Seoul-based experimental musicians, combining voice, electronics, tape devices, film projectors, and resonant objects in a subtle electroacoustic performance shaped by texture, space, and collective interpretation.
Kahn, Jason
All Across The Universe
(Editions)
Drawn from field recordings made in Tainan, Taiwan and recomposed in Zurich, this album by Jason Kahn transforms ambient hums, distant voices and architectural resonances into a contemplative sonic map where place becomes material, silence pulses with hidden motion and listening itself is foregrounded as gesture, inviting deep immersion rather than narrative resolution.
Butcher, John / Phil Durrant / Mark Wastell
Poznan: Appropriate Density
(Confront)
A trio of iconic UK improvisers — John Butcher on saxophones, Phil Durrant on electric mandolin and electronics, and Mark Wastell on percussion — perform at Poland's Spontaneous Music Festival in a richly textured set of acoustic and electronic interplay, where density, space, and responsiveness converge in a uniquely dynamic and nuanced session of free improvisation.
Kahn, Jason
When Your Way Gets Dark
(Editions)
Recorded live in Tainan, Taiwan, the ever-inventive Jason Kahn strips his sound to acoustic guitar, harmonium, and voice, weaving fragile melodies and raw textures into an intimate, exploratory performance that bridges his electroacoustic sensibility with an unvarnished eccentric vocal presence of remarkable immediacy and tension, at times invoking a Basho-like spirit.
Kahn, Jason / Magda Mayas
Night
(Editions)
Captured live at the Werkstatt für Improvisierte Musik in Zurich, Switzerland, this debut release from Jason Kahn (electronics) and Magda Mayas (piano, objects) presents three improvised pieces that blend their complementary palettes into a poetic and intricately detailed electroacoustic dialogue, reflecting their 13-year collaboration with a mix of introspection, spontaneity, and mutual respect.
Kahn, Jason
Every Hand Is Lunatic That Travels on the Moon
(Editions)
Recorded live at Kunstraum Walcheturm in Zurich, Jason Kahn's voice presents four improvised pieces blending voice, modular synths, and electronics, creating immersive soundscapes that explore sound's spatial and psychological dimensions, released in a limited edition of 100 hand-painted CDs by Editions.
Kahn, Jason / Alice Hui-Sheng Chang
I Smile When The Sound Is Singing Through The Space
(Editions)
The second album from Swiss improviser Jason Kahn and Taiwanese experimental vocalist Alice Hui-Sheng Chang, in eight pieces of free vocal improvisation recorded during Jason Kahn's one-month artist residency in September 2023 at Ting Shuo Hear Say in Tainan, Taiwan, an unusual collaboration of idiosyncratic interactions using a wide spectrum of vocal techniques.
Durrant, Phil / Daniel Thompson
Live / Studio
(Bead)
The improvising string duo of stalwart London improvisers, Daniel Thompson on acoustic guitar and Phil Durrant on the octave mandola, are heard in two settings of texturally rich, intricate interactions, first at Cafe OTO in 2022 for an extended improvisation, then at Cable Street Studios two months later for six succint, impressively diverse dialogs.
Kahn, Jason / Ulrich Krieger
Eternal City
(Editions)
Eccentric and engrossing electroacoustic improvisation between Jason Kahn on electronics and Ulrich Krieger using his "acoustic electronic" reed setup, performing on tenor saxophone, contrabass clarinet, and the 15th century double reed crumhorn, processed through his amplification system to create exotic textures and expressions; a truly unique set of dialogs.
Kahn, Jason
All Along the Way [BOOK + CD]
(Editions)
Swiss sound artist Jason Kahn chronicles his 37-solo concert tour through North America from the US to Canada, exploring the state of DIY experimental music scenes post-pandemic, including a CD of concert recordings in Portland and Chicago in 2022 using local radio and field recordings from each city, along with mod synths, tube amp, electromagnetic transducers and contact mics.
Kahn, Jason / Franzt Loriot / Christian Wolfarth
Koln

Denzler, Bertrand / Jason Kahn
Translations
(Potlatch)
The seventh release on Potlatch for tenor saxophonist Bertrand Denzler and the first for electronic artist Jason Kahn, in an extended electroacoustic improvisation, Denzler performing his instrument in ways Adolphe Sax did not intend intersected by Kahn's bent and crackly emissions, each increasingly assertive through to a engrossing, exhalable end.
Sealed Knot, The (Beins / Davies / Wastell)
and we disappear
(Another Timbre)
For a decade this trio has created some of the most interesting electroacoustic improvisation, captured in a 38 minute performance at the Ear We Are Festival in Biel, Switzerland, 2007.
