A major presence in European improvised music through his work with Louis Sclavis, Marc Ducret, Daniel Humair, Michel Portal and many others, French double bassist Bruno Chevillon has rarely documented his music entirely alone. Etats des lieux is only his second solo album, following the 2007 release Hors-Champ, which combined double bass with electronics. Here, Chevillon removes even that additional layer, concentrating exclusively on the acoustic instrument and its interaction with the resonant interior of the Lutheran Protestant Church of Bon Secours in Paris. Although recorded over two days in September 2011, the session remained unreleased until its 2026 issue by Samuel Blaser's SONGS label.

The title, which can suggest a survey or assessment of present conditions, aptly describes Chevillon's exploration of the double bass as a physical object situated within a particular room. Bowed tones gather harmonics from the church's stone surfaces, low pizzicato notes bloom and recede, and brief attacks return as softened echoes. Rather than treating the building as an attractive background, Chevillon incorporates its long reverberation, ambient hum and surrounding city sounds into the pacing of the improvisations, allowing each gesture to establish the conditions for the next.

Chevillon draws on the instrument's full acoustic range without turning the performance into a display of technique. Weighty low-register resonance, grainy arco textures, brittle harmonics, percussive contact and finely controlled silence are organized into a sustained investigation of sound, duration and decay. The music can be forceful, but its intensity comes as much from restraint and concentration as from volume, with Chevillon repeatedly testing how little material is necessary to activate the room.

Recorded with exceptional sensitivity by Philippe Teissier du Cros, Etats des lieux presents instrument, performer and architecture as equal participants. It is a rigorous yet deeply expressive solo statement from a bassist whose decades of ensemble experience have sharpened his awareness of response, space and consequence, even when his only partner is the resonance surrounding him.
