ANJU SINGH
Story by Melissa Vincent
Vancouver-based Anju Singh creative work has spanned a remarkable range of forms throughout her prolific career. "I've always known that I wanted to make things, she tells writer Melissa Vincent. She is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, sound artist, instrument builder, sculptor, animator, filmmaker, and curator. A longtime drummer in metal bands, she has always loved underground metal and music that pushes the boundaries of listening into the body. With numerous projects (sound installations, film scores, compositions, new instruments) already unleashed in 2026, and commissions in motion, Singh is taking matters into her own hands to keep art at the centre.
MINISTRY OF PHONIC SERVICES
Words and photos by Joe Strutt
Pack your headphones and an extra garbage bag for a field trip with citizen archivist Joe Strutt as he follows Toronto's Ministry of Phonic Services into the less-trodden corners of the urban outdoors to chronicle a year of their low-impact, community-supporting sonic events. "The curatorial impulses of the Ministry of Phonic Services lean toward new approaches to audio and sound, often at the more abrasive end of experimentation-where punk-inspired harsh noise rubs shoulders with more academic electroacoustic improvisation," Strutt writes.
[MONRHEA]
The aliases of Kenyan artist Wanjiru Ngure carry groovy worlds of their own, from drum and bass, techno, and hip-hop to African polyrhythms, creative coding, and new media. [MONRHEA] goes beyond fixed forms, venturing into collaboration, discovery, and experimentation, leaning to the unconventional and unpredictable while staying true to human form and agency. Technology is a powerful tool for creating immersive environments, and so is ancestral knowledge, heritage, and legacy. While performing DJ sets at international festivals, she builds community groups in Nairobi that support rising techno artists and sharpen their creative coding skills. How does humanity embed its place within the [RHEAVERSE] of circuitry and futurism that [MONRHEA] is building? Juro Kim Feliz sets out to learn more.
ARTHUR BULL
Guitarist Arthur Bull spent his teen years in 1960s Toronto exploring the nascent rock, blues, and jazz scenes. Active early on in bar bands and improv ensembles during the foundation of the Music Gallery and CCMC, he blossomed as a player after moving to rural Nova Scotia. Geographically distant yet never isolated, Bull built strong relationships with artists like Paul Cram, Daniel Heïkalo, and Eric Normand, while regular travels for his day job as a small fisheries lobbyist provided opportunities to improvise with notable artists around the globe. Bull speaks with Eric Hill about the perpetual discovery of guitar possibilities, publishing poetry, and how someone who never planned to be a professional musician has spent sixty years playing music in myriad contexts.
Drummer and composer John Hollenbeck forms collaborative ensembles to spark creative ideas and communities. He talks to Kurt Gottshcalk about the fun and challengeing performance practice of hocketing, the latest release from his band GEORGE (Looking for Consonance), and his collaborations with Meredith Monk and others.
Mili Hong's love of making rhythms started when she was a kid playing Beatmania at the local arcade and started her on a path from jazz to the more experimental forms and sounds she creates in Montreal ensembles, including her own. Graham Latham traces her journey.
Composer Panayiotis Kokoras talks to editor Jennie Punter about his piece Viper Snake, first-place winner of the 2025 Musicworks Electronic Music Composition Contest.
We review of new music from Allison Cameron and Scott Thomson, Wendy Eisenberg, Le GGRIL + DDK, Alex Zhang Hungtai, Radwan Ghazi Moumneh and Frédéric D. Oberland, Ryan Scott, Jacques Kuba Séguin, Tanya Tagaq, Toninato and Thiessen, and Witch Prophet.
We review the 2026 Festival international de musique actuelle de Victoriaville; the book Soundtrack to the Revolution: Free Jazz and Leftist Nationalism in Quebec, 1967- 1975; and the documentary Nash the Slash Rises Again!
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Mili Hong "Mili Hong began playing drums at the age of 16. She spent most of her life in South Korea until her early 20s when she moved to Vancouver, Canada to study English and Music. Although she originally planned to move back to Korea after completing her studies, she decided to remain in Vancouver to experiment and explore her new life in Canada's thriving and diverse music scene. At Capilano University she received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies, majoring in Instrumental Performance and played in various ensembles from small combos to big bands which exposed her to numerous chances to explore different styles of drumming, while also studying with drum instructors Graham Boyle, Blaine Wikjord, Dave Robbins, and Dylan van der Schyff. While playing in Capilano University's "A" band, under the direction of Juno award-winning Brad Turner, she had the chance to play with notable guest artists such as Ian Froman, Mike Murley, and Randy Brecker. Mili is becoming an important member of Canada's Jazz scene through her playing in a variety of different projects including Eli Davidovici and The Watermill Project and has also been involved in several alternative rock projects, including Moondle and Corey Gulkin. Her lifetime goal is to continue learning about her art and herself through her continuous study of music and language." ^ Hide Bio for Mili Hong • Show Bio for John Hollenbeck "John Hollenbeck is a composer of music uncategorizable beyond the fact of being always identifiably his. A conceptualist able to translate the traditions of jazz and new music into a fresh, eclectic, forward-looking language of his own invention, intellectually rewarding yet ever accessibly vibrant. A drummer and percussionist possessed of a playful versatility and a virtuosic wit. Most of all, a musical thinker - whether putting pen to paper or conjuring spontaneous sound - allergic to repetition, forever seeking to surprise himself and his audiences. [...] Hollenbeck received degrees in percussion and jazz composition from the Eastman School of Music before moving to New York City in the early 1990s. He was profoundly shaped by the mentorship of two hugely influential artists: trombonist/arranger/composer Bob Brookmeyer and composer/choreographer Meredith Monk. His relationship with Brookmeyer reached back to the age of 14, when he attended the SUNY Binghamton Summer Jazz Workshop, and continued at Eastman, through NEA-funded composition study, and finally on the bandstand with Brookmeyer's New Art Orchestra and in the studio with Brookmeyer and trumpet great Kenny Wheeler. For Monk, Hollenbeck composed and performed the percussion scores for five of her works: "Magic Frequencies," "Mercy," "The Impermanence Project," "Songs of Ascension" and "On Behalf of Nature." Hollenbeck's awards and honors include four Grammy nominations; the 2012 Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, the 2010 ASCAP Jazz Vanguard Award and a 2007 Guggenheim Fellowship; winning the Jazz Composers Alliance Composition Contest in 1995 and 2002; Meet the Composer's Grants in 1995 and 2001; and a Rising Star Arranger win in the 2012 and 2013 DownBeat Critics' Polls as well as in 2011 for the JHLE as Rising Star Big Band. John was a professor of Jazz Drums and Improvisation at the Jazz Institute Berlin from 2005-2016 and in 2015 joined the faculty of McGill University's Schulich School of Music." ^ Hide Bio for John Hollenbeck • Show Bio for Arthur Bull "Arthur Bull. Born Residence: Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada. Composer, Performer (semi-acoustic guitar). Arthur Bull is a veteran musician of the improvising music scene. Formerly the guitarist with The Bill Smith Ensemble, Bull has also played extensively with Paul Dutton, David Prentice, Michael Snow, John Oswald and John Heward, and he has performed in concert with Derek Bailey, Roscoe Mitchell and Roger Turner. He is also a poet, with three books published, and a translator from the Chinese. Originally from Ontario, Bull now lives in Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia, with his artist and musician wife, Ruth Bull." ^ Hide Bio for Arthur Bull • Show Bio for Ted Byrnes "Ted Byrnes is a drummer/percussionist living in Los Angeles. An alumnus of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, he comes from a jazz background and has since made his home in the worlds of free improvisation, new music, electro-acoustic music, and noise. Ted primarily works in ad hoc improvisational settings, but has standing improvisational groups including: a group with John Wiese, a duo with Jeff Parker, a duo with Chris Cooper (AQH), a duo with Charlie Mumma, a duo with Sam McKinlay, a duo with William Hutson, a trio with Jacob Wick and Michael Foster, among others. Additionally, Ted has played in duo/trio/or ensemble settings with: Mazen Kerbaj, Matt Weston, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, Charlemagne Palestine, Alfred 23 Harth, Arrington de Dionyso, Jaap Blonk, Torsten Muller, Kim Myhr, Jim Denley, Lloyd Honeybrook, Chris Schlarb, Mike Watt, Paul Masvidal, the LAFMS (including Smegma, Airway, Ace Farren Ford's Artificial Art Ensemble, Rick and Joe Potts, Fredrik Nilsen, Tom Recchion, Vetza, etc), Sissy Spacek (the band), Maher Shalal Hash Baz, and more. Ted's recorded output oscillates between heavily acoustic music and harsh noise while keeping a similar approach. Ted has also collaborated with / worked for a variety of visual artists: he has accompanied a Doug Aitken "happening", scored and performed percussion for an Emily Mast performance, collaborated with Olivia Booth to play her glass artworks, collaborated with Dani Tull on a sound performance, performed with John Knuth and Bret Nicely at an installation in an empty pool, and has performed for FLUXUS artist Jeff Perkins on multiple occasions for his projector/light installations." ^ Hide Bio for Ted Byrnes
