Eric Mingus and Elliott Sharp extend more than twenty-five years of collaboration from Terraplane and Songs From A Rogue State into a concentrated duo album of psychedelic punkfunk No Wave, with Mingus' commanding voice driven by Sharp's guitars, bass, synths, and drum programming in fourteen jagged songs of blues, politics, rupture, and electric urgency.

Eric Mingus and Elliott Sharp have worked together for more than twenty-five years, most visibly through Sharp's futurist blues project Terraplane, where Mingus' voice became one of the band's defining forces, bringing poetry, blues gravity, political edge, and raw theatrical presence into Sharp's charged collision of guitars, rhythm, electronics, and contemporary urban sound.
Mingus carries a deep musical inheritance as the son of Charles and Judy Mingus, growing up around his father's composing, rehearsals, and performances, studying cello and music theory with him and drums with longtime Mingus drummer Dannie Richmond. Yet his own work has never simply leaned on that lineage; instead, he has transformed its intensity, social engagement, and emotional directness into a voice that can move through blues, soul, spoken word, experimental song, and avant-rock with commanding individuality.
Sharp's own history gives that voice a volatile architecture. A central figure in New York's experimental music since the late 1970s, he has moved between No Wave, blues, free improvisation, contemporary composition, noise, electronics, and mutant song forms, often using guitar and studio technology as tools for both structure and disruption. In Terraplane and related projects, Sharp and Mingus developed a shared language rooted in the blues but warped through post-industrial rhythm, punk energy, political poetry, and densely amplified sound.
Their 2022 release Songs From A Rogue State, with Don McKenzie contributing drum samples and loops, framed that language as a set of politically charged songs from inside a troubled American landscape, mixing post-rock, post-bop, post-rap, post-blues, humor, rage, and critique. Wrench In The Works sharpens that approach into a more concentrated duo statement, with Mingus' voice set against Sharp's electric guitars, baritone guitar, electric bass, analog synthesizers, and drum programming.
Across fourteen sung and instrumental pieces, the album continues their psychedelic punkfunk No Wave mission, drawing historical sparks from Howlin' Wolf, Captain Beefheart, Jimi Hendrix, and the more abrasive edges of extreme music without settling into pastiche. Mingus delivers the words with a dark, prophetic force, while Sharp surrounds him with splintered riffs, distorted bass pressure, electronic turbulence, and mechanized grooves that keep the songs in a state of unstable motion.
Rather than nostalgia for blues, punk, or No Wave, Wrench In The Works uses those histories as combustible material for the present: a jagged, politically alert song cycle where voice and electronics, groove and rupture, anger and absurdity collide in a sound world that feels both ancestral and alarmingly current.
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Eric Mingus "b. 8 July 1964, New York City, New York, USA. The son of the legendary jazz bass player, Charles Mingus, he too plays bass. For some years he worked as a session musician and backing singer, playing on dates with artists such as Carla Bley, Bobby McFerrin and Karen Mantler. When performing in his own right, Mingus' work displays a politically aware and somewhat rebellious streak reminiscent of his father although in a different genre. In many of the songs he performs, some of which he also writes, he confronts issues that still detrimentally affect Black and mixed-race Americans. At the end of the 90s, Mingus' reputation began to spread overseas, owing in part to an appearance in England at the Meltdown Festival, during which he performed at London's Royal Festival Hall." ^ Hide Bio for Eric Mingus • Show Bio for Elliott Sharp "Elliott Sharp is an American multi-instrumentalist, composer, and performer. A central figure in the avant-garde and experimental music scene in New York City for over 30 years, Elliott Sharp has released over eighty-five recordings ranging from orchestral music to blues, jazz, noise, no wave rock, and techno music. He leads the projects Carbon and Orchestra Carbon, Tectonics, and Terraplane and has pioneered ways of applying fractal geometry, chaos theory, and genetic metaphors to musical composition and interaction. His collaborators have included Radio-Sinfonie Frankfurt; pop singer Debbie Harry; Ensemble Modern; Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan; Kronos String Quartet; Ensemble Resonanz; cello innovator Frances Marie Uitti; blues legends Hubert Sumlin and Pops Staples; pipa virtuoso Min-Xiao Feng; jazz greats Jack deJohnette, Oliver Lake, and Sonny Sharrock; multimedia artists Christian Marclay and Pierre Huyghe; and Bachir Attar, leader of the Master Musicians Of Jajouka. Sharp is a 2014 Guggenheim Fellow, and a 2014 Fellow at Parson's Center for Transformative Media. He received the 2015 Berlin Prize in Musical Composition from the American Academy in Berlin. He has composed scores for feature films and documentaries; created sound-design for interstitials on The Sundance Channel, MTV and Bravo networks; and has presented numerous sound installations in art galleries and museums. He is the subject of a new documentary "Doing The Don't" by filmmaker Bert Shapiro."-Elliott Sharp ^ Hide Bio for Elliott Sharp
