Bilat, Julia: Selva Oscura (Relative Pitch)

Polish cellist Julia Biłat presents ten live solo improvisations for acoustic cello, with voice on one track, using harmonics, rough bow textures, drones, percussion and silence in an intensely physical language shaped by years of intuitive exploration and Butoh practice, each piece named for a beetle species and tracing ideas of hidden space, transformation and metamorphosis.

Rose, Jon
Rosenberg Museum [5 CDs]
(Relative Pitch)
A five-CD survey of Jon Rose's Rosenberg Museum, the violinist's decades-long Gesamtkunstwerk of invented, altered and repurposed string instruments, documenting a practice that treats the violin as a limitless field for acoustic experiment, cultural critique and sonic invention, with John Oswald contributing to this expansive archive of new instruments, new sounds and unstable musical histories.
Olencki, Weston / Bascaille
The Mortgage Burn
(Relative Pitch)
Composed by Weston Olencki and performed by Rimouski percussion trio Bascaille - Tom Jacques, Antoine Létourneau-Berger and Noam Bierstone - this tactile set uses fiddles, homemade zithers, found debris, piano, guitar, motors, speakers and electronics to build ritualistic, unstable sound worlds of friction, resonance and lopsided pulse, including a transformation of the Québécois "Reel de Rimouski."
Valencia, Maria / Leonel Kaplan
Translucidas Criaturas Pulsantes
(Relative Pitch)
Colombian reedist María Valencia on alto saxophone and clarinet joins Argentine cornetist Leonel Kaplan for eight finely detailed improvisations recorded in Belgrade, developing patient dialogues of breath, resonance, extended technique and fragile lyricism that shift between sparse isolated gestures, intertwined textures and unexpectedly animated exchanges.
Khoury, Mike
For Hind Rajab
(Relative Pitch)
A deeply personal solo violin work dedicated to Hind Rajab, Mike Khoury uses extended techniques, sparse lyricism, tense silences, and raw timbral exploration to transform the violin into a vehicle for mourning, reflection, and fragile emotional resonance, balancing meditative stillness with moments of unsettling intensity in a haunting and highly expressive contemporary string performance.
Marshall, Hannah
Grazing
(Relative Pitch)
Presenting two extended solo performances recorded at Cafe Oto, cellist Hannah Marshall draws on classical training, theatre, and jazz to shape a deeply immersive free improv work, where patient explorations of tone evolve into tense constellations of harmonics and release through propulsive bowing, balancing immediacy, physicality, and a thoughtfully unfolding sonic narrative.
Parkins, Zeena
Lament For The Maker [CD + DOWNLOAD]
(Relative Pitch)
Marking the closing of Mills College and the end of Zeena Parkins' long association with its experimental community, this solo release presents three commissioned works alongside the ongoing acoustic piece berlin bedroom, unfolding a deeply reflective exploration of harp and electronics that honors artistic lineage, collective devotion, and the Bay Area's enduring spirit of experimental music-making.
Goldston, Lori
Open Space
(Relative Pitch)
A meditative and immersive solo cello work from Lori Goldston, performed in one continuous take with amplifier and distortion pedal, unfolding in ten resonant segments that evoke the gradual transformation of light and landscape, offering listeners an expansive and contemplative space for breath, reflection, and quiet communion with the natural world.
Sanchez, Paula
Pressure Sensitive
(Relative Pitch)
Recorded in Switzerland in 2021, Argentinian cellist and interdisciplinary artist Paula Sanchez pushes the cello to its sonic limits through six radical performances that merge acoustic and processed sound, combining cello, cellophane, and ring modulation to evoke a visceral, poetic, and at times merciless exploration of embodied sound and ephemeral transformation.
Cimini, Amy
See You When I Get There
(Relative Pitch)
The first solo album from West Coast violist Amy Cimini, blending amplified distortion, percussive textures, and spacious effects into a deeply personal and genre-blurring performance that channels experimental noise, tuneful abstraction, and the spirit of feminist rock and protest music into a resonant and evocative sonic journey.
Pavone, Jessica
What Happens Has Become Now
(Relative Pitch)
Her 5th solo viola album finds NY improviser & composer Jessica Pavone extending her exploration of music based on the pitches of the open strings, accentuating the natural sympathetic resonances of the instrument and expanded through the use of electronic effects to create a virtual duo, on one track performing on a Ken Butler hand-crafted hybrid instrument, the Sword Viola.
Reich, Maria
Interdependenzen
(Relative Pitch)
Nine investigations on the violin and two on the viola from Berlin composer and improviser Maria I.J. Reich, developed during research into solo improvisation, yielding a unique set of timbres, textures and impetus between the musician and the body & bow of the instrument, influenced by the different locations recorded at and presented as captured; a truly fascinating exploration.
Mines, Kelsey
Look Like
(Relative Pitch)
The first complete solo release from Seattle, Washington bassist and vocalist Kelsey Mines, active in both classical music as a member of Yakima Symphony, Symphony Tacoma and the Paramount Orchestra, and as an improviser, here presenting a series of improvised solo-duets that explore how listening to our on-going internal dialogue helps us conjure honest, outward expressions.
Fluke - Mogul, Gabby
Love Songs
(Relative Pitch)
An album of raw and emotional "love songs", 17 unique solo violin improvisations and vocal utterance as the New York improviser runs her bow with passionate openness and intimacy through raspy edges, ardent plucking, introspective aching, and moments of beauty, all displayed through immense technique and powerful control over her instrument.
Lubelski, Samara
Partial Infinite Sequence
(Relative Pitch)
Performing solo on violin with surrounding effects that emphasize the dramatic tension in her extended sequences, Samara Lubelski presents two substantial journeys into the infinite, swirling in delays and reverb as her bow transitions from rapid up and down to long drawing and sustaining, pulling a variety of sounds that elate her listeners in spirals and eddies.
Pavone, Jessica
Silent Spills
(Relative Pitch)
Using viola, effects, and on one track, voice, New York improviser and Anthony Braxton ensemble member Jessica Pavone presents a uniquely voiced solo album, approaching the instrument through simple means that become increasingly twisted and unforseen as they advance.
