Steve Davis returns to his enigmatic Money project for its fifth installment, continuing a deliberately austere series on his Love Earth Music label in which anonymity, repetition and minimal presentation are nearly as central to the concept as the music itself. Previously presented with virtually no explanatory text and with compositions repeatedly bearing the Money name, the project provides Davis with a distinct outlet apart from his much longer-running +DOG+ work.

Across the preceding Money releases, Davis has developed an unusually restrained language of dark ambient electronics, glitch, hollow resonance, low-frequency vibration and slow-moving noise. Where +DOG+ frequently embraces collage, abrasion and overtly turbulent density, Money tends toward suspension and reduction: sounds accumulate gradually, pulses emerge from murky electronic fields, and small disturbances assume greater significance within long stretches of uneasy stasis.

5, issued as a two-disc set on Love Earth Music, extends a sequence that began with the self-titled Money and continued through the numerically titled Money 2, Money 3 and 4. Davis continues to provide virtually no contextual information around the project, allowing its identity to reside in the recurring name, stark presentation and an electronic vocabulary deliberately separated from his more familiar +DOG+ persona. The result is another chapter in one of the more cryptic corners of the extensive Love Earth Music catalog.
