Pianist Irene Aranda brings together saxophonist Don Malfon and vocal artist Ami Yamasaki for a first trio recording built from three radically individual approaches to sound, merging prepared and extended piano techniques, Malfon's highly developed acoustic saxophone vocabulary and Yamasaki's echolocation-inspired voice into an unpredictable improvisational exchange of breath, resonance, friction and silence.

Spanish pianist Irene Aranda brings together Catalan saxophonist Don Malfon and Japanese vocal artist Ami Yamasaki for May, the first recording by a trio whose shared language grows less from conventional instrumental roles than from three highly personal approaches to the physical production of sound. Aranda conceived the group around what she describes as the "friction and compatibility" of these distinct musical identities, setting her exploratory piano practice between Malfon's radically extended acoustic saxophone techniques and Yamasaki's extraordinary investigation of voice, resonance and echolocation.
Malfon has spent years treating the saxophone as an object for sonic investigation, developing techniques that expose multiphonics, breath, noise, unstable pitches and sounds that often obscure the instrument's familiar identity. Yamasaki approaches the voice with an equally fundamental curiosity, listening to the reflections and vibrations generated by her own vocalizations and using an echolocation-like practice to engage directly with the acoustic space around her. Aranda's piano completes the triangle as both instrument and resonating environment, employing preparation and extended technique to uncover sounds beyond conventional keyboard articulation.
Across eight freely improvised pieces, those approaches create a music in which the boundaries between saxophone, voice and piano repeatedly blur. Breath can become tone or texture; vocal gestures can resemble instrumental attacks; piano resonance can operate as percussion, harmony or environmental sound. Rather than establishing accompaniment and solo roles, the trio continually reorganizes itself around fleeting timbral relationships, moving between sparse microscopic exchanges and more animated collisions while retaining an acute awareness of silence and acoustic space.
The deliberately peculiar sequence of "May..." titles adds a playful counterweight to music of considerable concentration, ending with the provocatively humorous May you all hate free jazz. But the album's deeper character lies in its refusal to settle into predictable gestures: three improvisers whose highly developed individual vocabularies meet without surrendering their differences, producing a continuously shifting conversation in which friction itself becomes a source of cohesion.
