Africa / Brass Live

Tenderlonious : Africa / Brass Live (22A)

Tenderlonious reimagines John Coltrane's Africa/Brass with pianist On-Ly, bassist Horatio Luna and drummer Tim Carnegie, reducing the original large ensemble to a searching quartet whose extended readings of Africa, Greensleeves and Blues Minor transform Coltrane's melodies and modal foundations through fiery improvisation, rhythmic elasticity and spacious collective interplay.

Artist Biographies

Tenderlonious is the performing name of British saxophonist, flutist, composer, producer and label founder Ed Cawthorne, a central figure in London's contemporary jazz and underground music scenes. Largely self-taught, he began playing saxophone in his twenties and subsequently expanded to flute, developing a language shaped by artists including John Coltrane and Yusef Lateef alongside hip-hop, house, techno and broken beat.

Cawthorne founded the 22a label in 2013 as an independent outlet for his own music and a network of related London artists, and leads the quartet Ruby Rushton as well as the larger 22archestra. His recordings move between modal and spiritual jazz, electronic production, dance music and Indian classical traditions, including collaborations with Pakistani ensemble Jaubi.

On-Ly is the solo and collaborative project of Melbourne pianist, composer and producer Joshua Smeltink. Rooted in jazz while drawing freely from house, hip-hop, psychedelic music and 1970s jazz-rock and fusion, his work places acoustic and electric keyboards at the center of music that moves between improvisation, groove-based writing and detailed studio production.

Smeltink has released a series of projects under the On-Ly name including Yurodivy, Wonderlust and BURN, working with changing Melbourne ensembles while developing a vocabulary influenced by electric Miles Davis, Weather Report, post-bop, fusion and contemporary beat music. Alongside piano, his recordings frequently employ Fender Rhodes, synthesizers and electronic production.

Horatio Luna is the performing name of Melbourne bassist, composer and producer Henry Hicks, whose work bridges jazz improvisation with house, funk, broken beat, hip-hop and electronic music. A founding member of the Melbourne collective 30/70, he has become a prominent figure in the city's interconnected jazz and dance-music communities.

As Horatio Luna, Hicks has developed a style he describes as "Jazzy House," combining improvising musicians with the repetitive structures and rhythmic drive of club music. His projects range from solo releases and beat-oriented recordings to ensemble work with artists and groups including 30/70, Teymori and a wide network of Melbourne musicians.

British drummer and percussionist Tim Carnegie is a longtime member of Tenderlonious' quartet Ruby Rushton, joining the group during its development into a tightly integrated blend of spiritual jazz, post-bop, jazz-funk and rhythmically intricate contemporary music. His playing has been central to releases including Ironside, Sun Khosi and Legacy!.

Carnegie's drumming combines precise ensemble control with a highly responsive improvisational approach, moving comfortably between hard-driving grooves, odd-meter structures, open jazz interaction and rhythms informed by funk, hip-hop and broken beat. His longstanding musical relationship with Tenderlonious made him the London-based member brought to Melbourne specifically for the Africa/Brass Live performance.
