A wonderfully improbable meeting between two musicians who have spent their careers stretching the traditions they emerged from, Two Balls Are Enough is the debut recording from Swedish reedist Mats Gustafsson and Finnish electro-acoustic accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen. The duo originated with an invitation to perform together at Ljubljana's Druga Godba festival in 2024, where an immediate musical rapport led to further concerts and, ultimately, this 2026 Vienna studio session.

Gustafsson brings an unusually broad arsenal of tenor, baritone and bass saxophones, clarinet, flutes, harmonica, organ and live electronics, while Pohjonen transforms accordion and voice through his own electro-acoustic vocabulary. Both musicians exploit the physicality of air-driven instruments while using electronics to extend, fracture and reshape their acoustic identities, creating music that can move from pounding rhythmic momentum and densely layered sonorities to stark, spacious exchanges and unexpectedly lyrical passages.

The nine pieces traverse composed and improvised terrain without settling comfortably into folk, free jazz, noise or electronic music. Pohjonen's "Ice Heaven" opens with a skittering rhythmic pulse beneath forceful unison lines and rapidly diverging solos, while Gustafsson's "Snow. Linat." shifts from ominous atmospheric textures toward passages of folk-inflected beauty. Elsewhere, the improvised title track folds live electronics into Gustafsson's agile flute playing, and a sequence of three pieces inspired by French writer Danielle Collobert pushes the duo toward more abstract and textural territory. Even the closing "Backengrillen" turns unexpectedly intimate, revealing a rustic lyricism beneath the pair's formidable sonic power.

What makes the collaboration compelling is not simply the contrast between Pohjonen's folk and classical foundations and Gustafsson's roots in free improvisation, but how thoroughly both musicians dismantle those distinctions. Their shared appetite for extreme dynamics, timbral transformation and spontaneous structural shifts results in an unusually cohesive debut whose raw physicality is matched by a surprising sensitivity to space, melody and detail.
