Composer Finola Merivale surrounds Catherine Sikora's layered tenor saxophone, breath tones and multiphonics with electronics and field recordings gathered in County Cork, New York and other changing environments, creating three immersive electroacoustic works that move from stark detail to surging masses of sound while exploring landscape, displacement, memory and the unsettled meaning of home.

The Irish word abhaile suggests both "home" and the movement homeward, an idea explored by composer Finola Merivale and tenor saxophonist Catherine Sikora through three expansive works for saxophone, field recordings and electronics. Created across several years and locations, the album considers home not as a fixed destination but as an accumulation of environments, memories and changing relationships to place.
The opening "Des Os," recorded in Paris in 2020, establishes the project's immersive language through layered saxophone lines and densely shaped electronic sound. The later pieces place Sikora's recordings from New Mexico within environments assembled by Merivale, including sounds gathered along the Atlantic coast of County Cork and in New York City. In "The Sea Has Hooves," Merivale draws particularly on the elemental force of West Cork, surrounding Sikora's tenor with surging, weather-like textures that suggest wind, water and exposed coastline.
Sikora moves between sustained tones, breath-driven detail, multiphonics and overlapping improvisational voices, while Merivale treats field recordings as active compositional materials rather than passive atmosphere. Environmental sounds merge with electronic processing until the distinction between instrumental gesture, landscape and memory becomes uncertain. Moving from spare, closely focused passages to great accumulations of sound, the music conveys displacement and return through an intense electroacoustic language, presenting home as something remembered, inhabited and continually reconstructed.
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Catherine Sikora "Tenor and soprano saxophonist, improviser and composer Catherine Sikora was first electrified by the sound of air vibrating in a metal tube when, as a child, she heard the wind playing tones and overtones in a metal gate. She has devoted her life to researching the magic of that sound with her saxophones, particularly in her solo work, which forms the main backbone of her creative output. Catherine's first solo album 'Jersey' was released on Relative Pitch Records in July 2016. She followed this with 'Warrior', an all-soprano saxophone solo recording in 2019. Her next solo tenor recording, 'Sanctuary', recorded live in Paris in summer of 2020, was released in fall 2020. In addition to her solo work, Sikora works frequently in duo and larger settings, with Eric Mingus, Brian Chase, Ursel Schlicht, Ethan Winogrand, Ross Hammond, Christopher Culpo and Matteo Liberatore. She is proud to be one third of the joyful rowdiness that is Eris 136199. Sikora is active as an educator and writes extensively on the subject of practice." ^ Hide Bio for Catherine Sikora • Show Bio for Finola Merivale "Finola Merivale is a composer of acoustic and electro-acoustic music, based between France and Ireland.
