Maria Laurette Friis is a Copenhagen-based Danish composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and singer active in the contemporary jazz and experimental music scenes, known for her distinctive voice and exploratory approach to sound. A versatile artist, she works across composition, improvisation, and sound art, often blending elements of jazz, electronic music, and avant-garde practices into fluid, texturally rich performances.

Friis first gained recognition as the lead songwriter of the alternative jazz group Tys Tys and has since developed a wide-ranging career through solo projects and collaborations with notable improvisers and composers. Her work frequently emphasizes spontaneous creation, using the voice as both a lyrical and abstract instrument, and engaging in deeply responsive musical dialogues within ensemble and duo settings.

Her artistic output is characterized by a strong intuitive, or even emotional, connection to both her co-performers and the audience, as well as a distinctive relationship to her instrument, which she consideres a percussion instrument as much as a wind instrument."
