Spanning Ike Quebec's Blue Note work from 1940s swing-era 78s through his early-1960s comeback, this four-CD set follows the tenor saxophonist's broad, breathy sound across blues, ballads, jukebox organ sessions, hard bop and Brazilian-inflected soul jazz, joined by Sir Charles Thompson, Earl Van Dyke, Skeeter Best, Milt Hinton, Sam Jones, J. C. Heard and others in performances of warmth, weight and direct emotional power.

Gathering recordings made for Blue Note from the mid-1940s through the final year of Ike Quebec's life, this four-CD collection traces the career of one of the label's most distinctive tenor saxophonists, from compact swing-era performances and blues-driven jukebox singles to the richly atmospheric albums that marked his remarkable early-1960s comeback.
Quebec (Born 17 August 1918) possessed an immediately recognizable sound: broad, breathy and sensuous on ballads, but capable of a muscular attack and earthy authority when moving through blues, swing and hard bop. Although his style retained the warmth and weight of the great pre-bop tenor tradition, he was no revivalist. His phrasing responded naturally to organ-combo grooves, soul-jazz rhythms and the increasingly modern language of Blue Note, giving even familiar standards a strongly personal balance of intimacy, rhythmic assurance and emotional directness.
The collection opens with six sides originally issued on three Blue Note 78s during the 1940s, then follows Quebec's return to the label through recordings made between 1959 and 1962 for the jukebox market. Accompanied by organists Edwin Swanston, Sir Charles Thompson and Earl Van Dyke, guitarists including Skeeter Best, and rhythm sections featuring Milt Hinton, J. C. Heard and others, Quebec moves through blues, standards and concise originals with an ease that helped restore him to prominence after a period away from regular recording.
The later discs draw on Heavy Soul, It Might as Well Be Spring, Blue & Sentimental, Easy Living and Bossa Nova Soul Samba, revealing the full breadth of his mature work. Intimate organ settings emphasize the romantic depth of his ballad playing; blues and hard-bop performances demonstrate his commanding rhythmic presence; and the Brazilian-inflected final sessions place his dark, enveloping tenor against lighter samba rhythms without sacrificing its essential warmth. The changing personnel and settings illuminate a musician equally convincing in understated standards, late-night blues and direct, groove-centered improvisation.
Quebec also played an important role behind the scenes at Blue Note, advising the label and helping connect it with emerging musicians. His death from lung cancer in January 1963 ended a comeback that had produced some of his finest recordings. Taken together, these performances offer a substantial portrait of a saxophonist whose music joined swing-era lyricism, blues feeling, hard-bop immediacy and soul-jazz accessibility in a voice of exceptional warmth and individuality.
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Ike Quebec Ike Quebec was an American tenor saxophonist, composer and occasional pianist whose broad, breathy tone joined the swing-era tradition of Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster to the blues, rhythm and blues, and emerging language of hard bop. After working with musicians including Roy Eldridge, Benny Carter, Ella Fitzgerald and Cab Calloway, Quebec established an important relationship with Blue Note Records during the 1940s, recording as a leader while also serving informally as a talent scout and intermediary for the label. Following a period of reduced activity during the 1950s, he returned through a series of jukebox-oriented Blue Note singles and a succession of albums that displayed his authoritative blues playing and unusually tender approach to ballads. His comeback was cut short by lung cancer, and he died in January 1963, only months after completing his final sessions. ^ Hide Bio for Ike Quebec • Show Bio for Edwin Swanston Edwin Swanston was an American jazz organist active in New York during the 1950s and early 1960s. He is best documented through his work with tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec, contributing organ to Quebec's July 1959 Blue Note session alongside guitarist Skeeter Best, bassist Sonny Wellesley and drummer Les Jenkins. Swanston also composed "Zonky" and "Blue Friday," two blues-centered pieces recorded at that session. His economical accompaniment and church-inflected organ sound helped establish the relaxed, jukebox-oriented setting in which Quebec launched his late-career return to recording. ^ Hide Bio for Edwin Swanston • Show Bio for Sir Charles Thompson Sir Charles Thompson was an American pianist, organist, composer and arranger whose career extended from the swing era through bebop and mainstream jazz. After early work with Lionel Hampton and Lester Young, he played and recorded with Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray and numerous other major musicians. Thompson earned the nickname "Sir Charles" from Lester Young and composed the frequently performed jazz standard "Robbins' Nest." Performing under the name Lord Bentley on Ike Quebec's 1960 Blue Note session, he supplied organ accompaniment whose blues, swing and rhythm-and-blues vocabulary complemented the saxophonist's warm tenor sound. ^ Hide Bio for Sir Charles Thompson • Show Bio for Earl Van Dyke Earl Van Dyke was an American pianist, organist and bandleader best known as the musical director and principal keyboardist of Motown's studio ensemble, the Funk Brothers. Before joining Motown, he worked in jazz and rhythm-and-blues groups, including an engagement replacing Jimmy Smith in saxophonist Chris Columbo's band. Van Dyke's command of piano and Hammond organ, precise rhythmic placement and ability to shape concise arrangements made him central to numerous Motown recordings of the 1960s. Earlier in his career, he participated in Ike Quebec's Blue Note sessions, contributing organ to the saxophonist's series of compact recordings intended for the jukebox market. ^ Hide Bio for Earl Van Dyke • Show Bio for Clifton 'Skeeter' Best Skeeter Best was an American jazz guitarist admired particularly for his sophisticated rhythm playing and understated command of the instrument. Emerging during the swing era, he worked with musicians including Earl Hines, Erskine Hawkins, Illinois Jacquet, Oscar Pettiford, Ray Charles and Milt Jackson, and was a member of the influential chamber-jazz ensemble the Three Sounds during its formative period. Best's crisp chordal support and supple swing made him a valued accompanist in small groups and studio sessions. He joined Ike Quebec for the saxophonist's July 1959 Blue Note recordings, helping create the relaxed organ-combo setting that initiated Quebec's successful comeback. ^ Hide Bio for Clifton 'Skeeter' Best • Show Bio for Willie Jones Willie Jones (19291991) was a subtle and skilled drummer who worked with some of the most progressive jazz musicians of the 1950s, including Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. Known for his sensitive accompaniment and tasteful restraint, Jones contributed to key sessions that balanced experimentalism with swing. Though he didnt record extensively as a leader, his work as a sideman, especially in early Monk recordings, reflects a deep understanding of form, space, and dynamic support. ^ Hide Bio for Willie Jones • Show Bio for Charles 'Sonny' Wellesley Charles "Sonny" Wellesley was an American jazz bassist active in New York during the 1950s and early 1960s. His recorded work includes Ike Quebec's July 1959 Blue Note session with organist Edwin Swanston, guitarist Skeeter Best and drummer Les Jenkins. Wellesley's unobtrusive but firm accompaniment anchored a group conceived around Quebec's blues-centered tenor saxophone and Swanston's organ, contributing to music intended both for concentrated listening and the contemporary jukebox market. Little reliable biographical documentation about Wellesley's broader career appears to have survived. ^ Hide Bio for Charles 'Sonny' Wellesley • Show Bio for Milt Hinton Milt Hinton was an American double bassist, educator and photographer whose career linked the swing era with several later generations of jazz. Known among musicians as "The Judge," he spent more than fifteen years with Cab Calloway before becoming one of New York's most frequently employed studio bassists, recording across jazz, popular music, film and television. His collaborators included Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Paul Gonsalves and numerous vocalists. Hinton's secure time, resonant sound and exceptional adaptability made him an ideal partner for Ike Quebec, accompanying the tenor saxophonist on organ-group sessions and several of his most important comeback albums. Hinton was also an accomplished photographer whose extensive archive provides an intimate visual history of American jazz life. ^ Hide Bio for Milt Hinton • Show Bio for Sam Jones Sam Jones was an American jazz double bassist, cellist and composer whose powerful walking lines, clear articulation and deep swing made him one of the most widely recorded rhythm-section musicians of the hard-bop era. After moving from Florida to New York, he worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Dorham and many others, and became especially prominent through extended associations with Cannonball Adderley, Oscar Peterson and Cedar Walton. Jones also led his own sessions and composed durable pieces including "Unit 7" and "Del Sasser." His disciplined yet responsive accompaniment supported musicians ranging from Bill Evans and Wes Montgomery to Freddie Hubbard and Ike Quebec. ^ Hide Bio for Sam Jones • Show Bio for Les Jenkins Les Jenkins was an American drummer active in jazz and rhythm-and-blues settings during the 1950s. He is principally documented through recordings with Ike Quebec, including the tenor saxophonist's July 1959 Blue Note session with organist Edwin Swanston, guitarist Skeeter Best and bassist Sonny Wellesley. Jenkins supplied an understated, blues-oriented pulse suited to the session's relaxed organ-combo instrumentation and its intended jukebox audience. Reliable published information about his life and wider musical career remains scarce. ^ Hide Bio for Les Jenkins • Show Bio for J. C. Heard J. C. Heard was an American drummer and bandleader whose versatile playing bridged swing, bebop and blues. He first gained prominence with Teddy Wilson's orchestra and subsequently worked with Benny Carter, Cab Calloway, Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and numerous other leading jazz musicians. Heard was valued for his buoyant time, strong ensemble support and ability to adjust naturally to both big bands and small groups. He later became an important figure in Detroit jazz, leading ensembles, mentoring younger musicians and helping preserve the city's swing tradition. His work with Ike Quebec included the saxophonist's 1960 Blue Note organ session with Sir Charles Thompson and Milt Hinton. ^ Hide Bio for J. C. Heard • Show Bio for Wilbert Hogan Wilbert Hogan was an American drummer active in jazz, blues and rhythm-and-blues recording during the 1950s and early 1960s. He appeared on sessions with organists and saxophonists whose music crossed between hard bop and the more direct, groove-centered style favored by the jukebox market. Hogan contributed to Ike Quebec's final series of Blue Note singles, providing firm, economical accompaniment behind Quebec's tenor saxophone and Earl Van Dyke's organ. Surviving documentation of Hogan's personal history and complete career is limited, but his recorded work places him within the network of versatile New York session musicians who helped connect postwar jazz with soul jazz and rhythm and blues. ^ Hide Bio for Wilbert Hogan
