"HobbyHouse is the self-titled debut album by the Berlin-based duo featuring Mia Dyberg (DK) on saxophone and Axel Filip (ARG) on drums. Rooted in avant-garde improvised jazz, HobbyHouse explores diverse musical structures and sonic playgrounds, crafting spontaneous compositions with a strong focus on timbral nuance and authenticity. The duo weaves these elements into vivid, evolving sound narratives that reflect their commitment to exploratory expression and creative immediacy."-Relative Pitch
HobbyHouse presents the Berlin-based duo of alto saxophonist Mia Dyberg and drummer Axel Filip as a tightly attuned partnership that treats the duo format as a laboratory for sound, texture, and form. Rooted in free jazz and free improvisation, their music resists linear development in favour of short, vivid episodes that feel shaped moment by moment, guided by listening rather than momentum. Dyberg's alto moves fluidly between fragmentary melodic traces and sharp-edged abstraction, while Filip approaches the drum kit as a field of colour and texture, allowing pulse to surface, dissolve, and re-form as needed.
What stands out is the duo's attention to timbral detail and physicality. Their playing often feels tactile, as if sounds are being handled and tested in real time, with a sensitivity to surface, resonance, and decay. Filip's drumming avoids default timekeeping, instead using density, friction, and restraint to shape the music's internal logic, while Dyberg responds with lines that can be brittle and incisive one moment, then breathy or spatially open the next. The result is an improvisational language that feels both deliberate and immediate, balancing instinct with a clear sense of proportion.
Across the album, the pieces unfold as compact sound narratives rather than vehicles for extended soloing. Space is used as an active element, and the duo shows a keen awareness of when to pare the music back to its barest components and when to let it surge forward through collective motion. HobbyHouse is a confident debut that highlights Dyberg and Filip's shared commitment to exploration, clarity, and trust, offering an engaging example of how much expressive range can be drawn from the stripped-down intimacy of the saxophone-drums format.

They are known for their versatility and ability to perform within a wide range of musical genres, from jazz and popular music to Argentine folk music, avant-garde, free and conducted improvisation. As a composer, Axel explores the relationship between jazz, improvisation, poetry and folklore music, creating soundscapes that evoke complex yet visceral emotions.
