"The "Mare Tranquilitatis" is the "Sea of Tranquility" on the moon. It is the place where the first moon landing took place, 50 years ago. It is unclear whether the album in any way wants to join the celebrations of this event, since the performance itself was recorded live recording on November 10th 2018 at O'Culto da Ajuda, Lisbon, during the CreativeFest XII.

We've reviewed albums by the orchestra before, and I think this is one of their best. Ernesto Rodrigues, acting as the conductor of this large ensemble, leading his 28 musicians through sonic soundscapes that alternate between light-textured minimalist moments

We've reviewed albums by the orchestra before, and I think this is one of their best. Ernesto Rodrigues, acting as the conductor of this large ensemble, leading his 28 musicians through sonic soundscapes that alternate between light-textured minimalist moments to dense and dramatic eruptions of sound, does it with verve. The music's unpredictability and especially the cohesion of the orchestra within this unpredictability is fascinating to listen to, and a testament to Rodrigues' skills to move the music forward along his wishes. This is no small feat.

But what does "Variable Geometry" mean? In the European political context, it refers to different levels of cooperation between countries in the European Union (like their willingness to participate in the Schengen zone, or participate in the common euro currency). It means integration and participation at different speeds and levels. In the context of aerodynamics, it means that an airplane may change the configuration of its wings during a flight. Whatever the real and original name that triggered Rodrigues to use the term for his orchestra, the concepts of collaborative difference, of changing dynamics and openness to variation appear essential.

The orchestra's sound is a collective sound, one that avoids solo voices, and even if they are discernable at times, often in short phrases and shouts, emanating from the voluminous mass of the orchestra's groundswell, they are more like birds straying from a flock to return before you've noticed their separate movement. The sound is not about the voices, it's about the total sonic experience of changes in depth and intensity, the dynamic swirling of sonorities and pitch, the flowing of harmonies and dissonance, of unity and chaos.

In case you wondered, the Mare Tranquilitatis may be tranquil at some moments, and there's even a short span of absolute silence, yet there is more to it than tranquility. It's worth the trip. Join us to the moon."-By Stef, The Free Jazz Collective

"Étienne Brunet is a musician, composer and improviser, born in Paris on January 2, 1954. He plays saxophone alto and soprano, bass clarinet , bagpipes, harmonicas and electronic instruments.

He took part in children's choir at the Opéra de Nice at the age of seven, then re-learned music as a self-taught musician as a teenager and took classes with Steve Lacy whose originality of musical thought will influence his entire career. He will do many jobs in addition to music (press modelist, book worker, saxophone tuner, operator on synthesizer writing for television channels). In 1979, he founded the trio Axolotl (not to be confused with other homonymous groups that came one or two decades later) with Marc Dufourd and Jacques Oger. In 1984 he founded the group Aller Simple Paris, with the accordionist Odile Lavault known as Gina Sbu, devoted to folk music arrangements from Eastern Europe. From 1987 he collaborated with the poet Julien Blaine . "Mia Dyberg (b, 1986) is a Danish saxophonist, improviser and composer currently residing in Berlin, Germany, where she works as a freelance musician. Performing with improv-musicians such as Clayton Thomas, Dag Magnus Narvesen, Casey Moir and Tobias Delius.

Her ability to combine sound experiments with melancholy in a unique melodic expression, makes her one of the new exciting voices on the European jazz scene. She is active project leader & co-founder of the international improvisers collective The Community.

Mia is a part of the Copenhagen jazz/improv. scene and holds a Master Diploma in Music '2015 from the Conservatory of Copenhagen. She grew up in the Swedish archipelago and her both wild and impressionistic music is often affected by grand nature. But there is also a pulse of the city.

The last couple of years she has made roots on the international scene as a leader of projects as: Mia Dyberg Trio, Dyberg 4 Ra, Kovacs & Dyberg, Christian Balvig/Mia Dyberg feat. "Noel Taylor's main instruments belong to the clarinet family - soprano, alto and bass clarinet. He lives in Lisbon, Portugal, where he moved in 2017. He has performed widely in the UK, Portugal, Germany, Poland and Italy. He is a dedicated improviser, but his work also includes short compositions, conductions with large scale orchestras, and organising musical events. .

Recent projects have involved the trio 'Redstart' , 'Splatter (with Anna Kaluza, Pedro Velasco & Tom Greenhalgh), 'Happenstance' (with Chris Biscoe, Tom Greenhalgh, Guillaume Viltard), Grimwald (with Steve Beresford, Terry Day & Roberto Sassi). "Was born 1988 in Lisboa, Portugal and started playing cello and trumpet at Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa at the age of 7. In 1999 joined Conservatório Nacional de Música de Lisboa to study classical and music theory and in the current year recorded his first album - Multiples - with Ernesto Rodrigues and José Oliveira out on Creative Sources Recordings.

Apart from work in music ensembles ranging for contemporary classical to free improvisation, also works with live music poetry, theatre and film-music. After lengthy residency in Lisboa, (1988-2016) moved to Berlin and has been active as composer and improviser in the scene.

"Helena Espvall is a cello player who is comfortable in indie rock and improvised music circles. She was born and raised in Sweden, playing guitar and cello in rock bands and a silent movie orchestra. Moving to the U.S. and settling in Philadelphia in 2000, Espvall further explored Arabic music, performed with the Amnesiac Music & Dance Ensemble, and joined the contemporary psychedelic-folk group Espers, recording the CDs Weed Tree and II with them. Her penchant for playing free jazz has resulted in collaborations with guitarist Eugene Chadbourne. She is a featured artist with saxophonist/flutist Oluyemi Thomas on his recording Before the Beginning, and with From Quagmire on Habitats in the Wound. Around the age of 10 began playing the clarinet. At 17 he bought a flute and entered the Academy of Music where he Amateurs solfeggio and instrument with Paulo Curado for two years . "Johan Moir graduated with his Bachelor of Improvisation at the Academy of Music and Drama, in Gothenburg, Sweden 2011.

After a couple of years in Berlin and Melbourne, Johan is now based in Stockholm dwelling deeper into his solo project where he explores acoustic improvisation on the double bass, focusing on extended techniques, preparations, Just Intonation and psychoacoustic phenomens.

Other main projects for the moment includes his duo IGNITE (with vocalist Casey Moir) as well as a duo with the Portuguese Cello player Guilherme Rodrigues

Johan also participates in several Ad-hoc projects with different musicians, dancers and artists. Among others, Johan has been collaborating with Burkhard Beins (DE) Emilio Gordoa (MX/DE), Brad Henkel(DE/US), Guillherme Rodrigues(POR/DE), Nicola Hein(DE), Casey Moir (AUS/SE), Reuben Lewis(AUS), Alice Hui-Sheng Chang (TW), Ingo Reuelucke (DE) & Mattias Windemo(SE)

Johan has also toured with various groups in Sweden, Norway, Australia, Estonia, Denmark, Poland, Austria, Hungary , Taiwan and Palestine.

Previous projects that Johan has been the composer and bandleader for includes his own quintet called The Johan Moir Ensemble, the Swedish / Australian quintet SVELIA, as well as the alternative pop duo Mother Jack. "I was born in December 1969 in Lisbon. The first contacts I had with the arts began around the age of 5 in the holiday camps of (CRGE) the current EDP, and it was certainly this exhibition until the age of 12 which led me to develop a taste for music and also by the theater that I did in an amateur way but with some cadence during my childhood, my starting point, an awakening in this case for the music that has accompanied me throughout life. Much later I attended 2 training courses at UNL directed to early childhood and preschool with the theoretical basis and practice of Edwin Gordon's Musical Learning Theory (Musical Orientations for children from 0 to 9 years of age / Musical Orientations 1st Childhood and preschool) with teachers Edwin Gordon, Helena Rodrigues, Ana Paula Almeida and António Rocha. Later I developed the (PIS) Project Infante Sonoro - Musical learning for newborns and children of preschool age to put into practice what I had learned, I loved this project. I also attended the electric bass course of EJMA - Ecole de jazz et Musique Actuelle de Lausanne (Switzerland) 1992/1995. I have had some experiences as a monitor in activities related to children and music, various musical activities, and construction of musical instruments from waste. Also in this journey I wrote and played the puppet and marionettes theater piece "A trip of Dream" that toured the Algarve in 1999. I played in several original musical projects such as the IRS band and many others covers bands like, (JAB) that would later start my original band with 11 musicians the project (Adão & Elas). Still in the covers ... I was founder of the group (Zappanoia), project to pay homage to the work of Frank Zappa) with which I played in and out of Portugal doors, I participate in several activities and cultural events such Biennial Chaves / Vigo, Zappanale Music Festival (Germany) just to mention a few.

At the moment I am going through the meanders of the free improvisation music, but I worked last year with the guitarist Fernando Guiomar in his project (TRAPE-ZAPE) nevertheless I am always open for new experiences. I participated several times in (MIA) Encontro de música improvisada de Atouguia da Baleia. the larger event produced in Portugal related to free improvisation music.

"Ramon Lopez was born on August 6th 1961 in Alicante, Spain. Drummer, Percussionist and Composer. He began as a self-taught drummer in the mid-1970's. Witnessing a Max Roach solo concert in 1980 was a turning point that fundamentally changed his understanding of music. He was part of local groups until he decided to move to Paris in January 1985 and became increasingly involved in the experimental scene in France. At the same time, he developed an interest in Indian music, and took tabla lessons with Krishna Govinda K.C. He is currently a student of Pandit Subhankar Banerjee, while teaching Indian music himself with Patrick Moutal at the Paris Conservatory (1994-2001) His first recording as a leader, an album of solo drums, was released in 1997 on the British Leo label linked to free jazz music and improvisation. Besides Jazz and Indian music, he is attracted especially to flamenco music. He has worked with some of the great flamenco artists, among them Carmen Linares, Esperanza Fernández, Inés Bacán, Gerardo Núñez, Rafael de Utrera, Chano Domínguez, etc... His musical endeavours have always been challenging; his interpretation of songs from the Spanish civil war (2001) spring to mind, or his duos dedicated to Roland Kirk (2002). From 1997 to 2000 he was drummer in the renowned French Orchestre National de Jazz under Didier Levallet, who continues to expand the traditional vocabulary of the orchestra with new elements. "Studied painting with António Sena (Ar.Co, 1988 -1992), worked in advertising for a period of time, but nowadays works as graphic designer in corporate identity, packaging, web and audio-video production.

Started sound/music activities in 1989 when formed the VITRIOL project with Paulo Raposo, a laboratory for experimental sound actions, in a first stage with studio work followed in 1994 by live output, mainly live electronics, concrete music with a improvised or graphic score oriented approach. Uses the laptop with software written in MaxMsp, small resonant objects, microphones and piezo elements to produce a music that deals with space and its sound characteristics. The Suspensao octet are heard in this live performance at SMUP, in Parede, Portugal in 2023, blending primarily acoustic instruments with electric guitar and analog synth, using a reductionist approach to highly concentrative and suspenseful free improvisation, their long-running collective history allowing an impressive level of articulation and control through the integration of diverse voices.
