"Jeux de mains, a striking new album from acclaimed double bassist Joelle Leandre and inventive composer-performer Remy Belanger de Beauport, arrives as a vivid exploration of spontaneous musical conversation. Recorded with immediacy and an acute sense of shared risk, the record captures two master improvisers at the peak of their creative powers.
Across the album's immersive tracks, Leandre's visceral arco, percussive pizzicato, and fearless extended techniques meet Remy Belanger de Beauport's textural ingenuity and responsive sonic architecture. The duo's interplay is telepathic: moments of raw intensity give way to razor-sharp silence, delicate micro-gesture, and slow-blooming drones. Their music dissolves conventional roles-bass as rhythm section or solo voice-and instead treats sound itself as the primary storyteller.
Jeux de mains traces a broad sonic palette that draws from free improvisation, contemporary extended technique, ambient collage, and ritualistic drone. Each piece unfolds as a narrative without words: gestures metamorphose into motifs, textures coalesce into landscapes, and accidental harmonies become focal points of emotional weight. The result is an album that rewards close listening while remaining arresting on first encounter.
Recorded with clarity and an eye for dynamic contrast, Jeux de mains highlights both intimate detail and sweeping tonal arcs. The production preserves the immediacy of the session-the breath, the string scrape, the resonance-so the listener feels present within the exchange.""-Tour de Bras
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Joelle Leandre "Joëlle Léandre is a famous French Bassist and is known for her collaborations with other musicians in the field of improvised music. Born in France on September 12th, 1951, she made her music debut in 1984 with Les Douze Sons. Her childhood was filled with music, and she was particularly interested in the piano during her early years. In her later years, she developed an interest in double bass, which won her many honors and scholarships during her education. Her double bass teacher Pierre Delescluse encouraged her to apply to the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris, where she was formally trained and noticed for her talent in the bass. Her outstanding musicianship took her to the United States and to the Centre for Creative and Performing Arts in Buffalo through a scholarship. In the United States, she expanded her network and met some of the best composers, such as John Cage, Giacinto Scelsi, and Morton Feldman. Among them, John Cage greatly influenced her music and compositions. Her time in the United States also enabled her to experience downtown New York music, which was another significant influence that led to her continued involvement in the field of improvised music. Some of her notable collaborations in the field of contemporary music are with Pierre Boulez, Merce Cunningham, John Cage, and Giacinto Scelsi. Among them, John Cage and Giacinto Scelsi were the biggest influences in her life and music. In an interview, Joëlle Léandre said that John Cage was her spiritual father and changed her perception of sound and music. In another interview, she tells how Giacinto Scelsi allowed her to discover her own music and how his music transported her into a new world of improved consciousness. In the field of jazz music, she collaborated with Derek Bailey, William Parker, and Sebi Tramontana. Her music was owned and distributed by different music labels, including FMP, Leo, RougueArt, and Red Toucan. Some memorable songs and albums she released throughout the years include Instant Replay, Les Douze sons, Trios, Sweet Zee, Frerebet, Joelle et Tetsu, Philippe Fenelon, Voyages, etc. Some of the recent releases include Can You Hear Me and Unleashed. She has also performed live at the Tampere Jazz Festival twice, where popular international artists compete with each other. Joëlle Léandre is also the member of European Women's Improvising Group (EWIG). The group evolved from the Feminist Improvising Group, and Joëlle Léandre joined the group in 1983. In the early 1900s, she co-founded Les Diaboliques with Irene Schweizer and Maggie Nicols, who were her long-time musician friends. Besides that, she also teaches several classes in prestigious universities about contemporary and improvised music. She has lived in France, Germany, and U.S during her lifetime, teaching at academic institutions in the religions and playing concerts. In 2002, she was invited to Canada as a visiting professor for music and composition." ^ Hide Bio for Joelle Leandre • Show Bio for Remy Belanger de Beauport "As a musician, Rémy Bélanger de Beauport is first and foremost a free-improv cellist. He plays piano for ballet classes, electric bass, guitar and drums for rock bands and vocals in different contexts. As a mathematician, he has taught college-level math. He also organizes events and gets himself involved in many causes. Originally from Québec City, Rémy's artistic practice as an experimental musician dates back to his teenage years. Influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen and Nirvana, he publishes a first recording in 2003, with noise trio soda pop for a Déluge/Alterflow compilation. The same year, he releases an album as duo KL6 39E, on guitar, before switching over to the cello, starting the Fenaison trio with a first album on Ambiances Magnétiques in 2007. Since then, he has been active in many long and short term projects: as a singer in Ensemble Partiel, he performs Stimmung, by Karlheinz Stockhausen; as a free-improv cellist, he plays in Le Veau / The Veal on Cuchabata Records (Faire l'amour aux banques, 2015) and is regularly invited to play one-off concerts. As the cellist in GGRIL (an improvisers' orchestra based in Rimouski, Québec) he is heard on Combines (Tour de bras, 2015) and has performed in France and Italy as part of a European tour in 2016. While living in Belring in 2015-2016, he formed string trio THUYA with bass player Klaus Kürvers and violinist Gerhard Uebele (Live @ the CLUB, Creative Sources Recordings, 2016) and joined the Berlin Improvisers' Orchestra. He has recently released a flexidisc Angenehmer Duft on Kohlenstoff Records and a solo album D'éclisses on Ambiances Magnétiques. Rémy often works with dancers and choreographers, like Valerie Sabbah with whom he performs as Roméo & Juliette. He plays piano for ballet classes in various institutions such as L'École supérieure de ballet du Québec, L'École de danse de Québec and the Royal Academy of Dance, Berlin. For the Réseau d'enseignement de la danse, he composed and recorded, with percussionist Steve Hamel, music targeted for the teaching of Simonson Jazz dance in 2015. Rémy has participated in several festivals as a free-improv cellist, Festival international de musique actuelle in Victoriaville, Francofolies in Montréal, Festival international de la littérature in Montréal, Festival des musiques de créations in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Rencontres de musiques spontanées in Rimouski, Kunst und Kultur Forum in Berlin. Rémy graduated in composition and music theory at McGill University, in mathematics at Université du Québec à Montréal and participates in improvisation masterclasses, perhaps more notably with Jean Derome, Lori Freedman, Fred Frith, Tristan Honsinger and Joëlle Léandre. He has earned scholarships and awards from McGill University in 2003, 2009 and 2010, the Coup de cœur SuperMusique in 2008 with Quintette de l'Halloween and the Prix culturel Rimouskois, pour la relève in 2013." ^ Hide Bio for Remy Belanger de Beauport
