Rodrigues, Ernesto / Claudia Risch / Grgur Savic / Guilherme Rodrigues: Past Dreams In Rust (Creative Sources)

Recorded in Berlin in 2022, this quartet of violin, flute/bass clarinet, alto saxophone, percussion, and cello unfolds a restrained improvisation focused on fragile textures, breath-driven tones, and microtonal tension, as shifting timbres and sparse gestures accumulate into a patient, weathered soundscape shaped by decay, resonance, and collective listening.

Artist Biographies

"He has been playing the violin for 30 years and in that time has played all genres of music ranging from contemporary music to free jazz and improvised music, live and in the studio.

His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music.

The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements.

Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning.

Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups.

Music for Dance, Cinema, Video and Performance.

Has created the record label Creative Sources Recordings in 1999, which mainly concentrates on releasing experimental and electro-acoustic music."

"Claudia Risch is a Berlin-based musician and improviser active in the city's experimental and Echtzeitmusik (real-time music) scene. She works primarily with flute and bass clarinet, exploring extended techniques, microtonal colours, and unconventional sound production within free improv and contemporary sound art contexts. Her playing emphasises breath sounds, multiphonics, micro-intervals and nuanced timbral variation, letting the instruments resonate beyond traditional melodic roles into sculptural and textural sound events.

Risch appears regularly in Berlin performance series such as Improvised and Experimental at Hošek Contemporary, where she performs solo and in collaboration with electronics artists and other improvisers, often situating her wind instruments amid installations or multi-media environments. A 2024 performance documented her work with bass clarinet in trio settings alongside electronic and saxophone partners during the Experimentik #70 series at Theater im Kino, blending acoustic gestures with electro-acoustic interplay.

Her activity within the broader Berlin scene also includes participation in improvisation-focused events like Freistil - The Art of Improvisation, where she has been listed among other experimental musicians performing collective improvisations with wind, strings, and other acoustic sound sources.

While details about formal training and biographical background beyond her Berlin performance presence are less widely published online, Risch is recognised among peers and presenters in experimental music circles for her deep engagement with acoustic sound exploration, making her flute and bass clarinet practice a distinct voice within contemporary European improvised music."

"Grgur Savić (b. 1983) works at the intersection of sound, visual art, and technology. His practice investigates interactivity in experimental acoustic and electro-acoustic settings, combining performance, graphic-score composition and improvisation. He engages with contemporary repertoire through nontraditional playing techniques- prepared saxophone- acoustic studies on resonance and vibration, and MAX/MSP- based electronic processes in his project [air>coded]. Alongside his performative work, he engages material-based inquiry, transforming found objects and discarded texts- [graphic score Book Project], into combined new sound and visual works."
