Balancing clarity with a free-thinking spirit, vibraphonist Bobby Naughton leads his trio with bassist Joe Fonda and drummer Randy Kaye through original works alongside compositions by Anthony Braxton and Carla Bley, captured live at Charlie's Tap in Cambridge, MA in 1985, where lucid melodies, bowed bass lyricism and pointed drumming converge in a poised set that affirms Naughton's singular voice.

As a composer for improvisers, Naughton valued clarity of line. No matter how quirky the melody's rhythms or long and twisty its contours, his compositions are lucid and witty.
In 1985, the late vibraphonist Bobby Naughton and his trio played several times at Charlie's Tap, a neighborhood bar turned jazz club in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He recorded the band each time. There was a weekend gig on April 5 and 6 and later in the year, single dates on September 27 and October 10. Also, two days before the September date, the trio set up during the day and recorded before the club opened.
"Today, a number of drummers, including Ches Smith and Kenny Wollesen, also double on vibraphone, underscoring the instrument's fundamentally percussive nature. In the hands of Bobby Naughton, however, the vibraphone functioned as something more expansive: a reimagined piano, capable of both harmonic depth and rhythmic propulsion. Naughton began studying piano at the age of eight, performing classical repertoire before moving on to rock 'n' roll and the organ. It was only after encountering free jazz that he migrated fully to the vibraphone, an instrument that allowed him to integrate structure and freedom in equal measure. Over the course of his career, he worked and recorded with an impressive roster of creative musicians, including Wadada Leo Smith, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Perry Robinson and Mario Pavone.
Although Naughton was an active participant in New York's loft scene of the late 1960s and 1970s and founded his own imprint, OTIC Records, he eventually withdrew from the city's music scene. In a surprising turn, he took up work as a locksmith. Today, his OTIC releases are highly sought-after artifacts among collectors, and NoBusiness has previously reissued The Haunt (2018), a 1976 OTIC album featuring Smith and Robinson.
Naughton's trio with drummer Joe Fonda released a 1983 live recording Zoar (OTIC, 2001), from Yale University just a year before Naughton passed away. Live At Charlie's Tap presents previously unreleased music by the same trio, captured over multiple nights at a Cambridge, Massachusetts bar in 1985. Although Naughton personally selected these tracks, they were never issued during his lifetime.
Here, Naughton delivers bright, crystalline renditions of his own compositions alongside a piece each by Carla Bley ("Vashkar") and Anthony Braxton ("Composition 23J"). The trio's performances of "Shepaug Strut" and "Housatonic Rumble" evoke the refined lyricism of pianist John Lewis, framed by Fonda's caressing bowed bass and Kaye's roiling yet sensitive drumming. Throughout, Naughton maintains a calm, centered presence. A modern analogue might be vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz at his most melodic: both musicians can induce a swooning effect through inventive lyricism while retaining an unmistakable avant-garde edge. Live At Charlie's Tap stands as a vital document of Naughton's singular voice and a reminder of how quietly transformative his music remains."-Mark Corroto, All About Jazz

Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Bobby Naughton "Bobby Naughton is self-taught as a performer and composer. After playing in rock-and-roll groups he took up the vibraphone in 1966, and in the late 1960s played with Perry Robinson, Sheila Jordan, and others. He continued to work intermittently with Robinson while recording as a leader from 1969 on his own label, Otic; in 1971 he wrote a score for Hans Richter's silent film Everyday (1929). He played with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra in 1972 and Leo Smith (from the mid 1970s), and joined the Creative Music Improvisors Forum in New Haven, Connecticut. Naughton's vibraphone playing, like that of Gunter Hampel, emphasizes the instrument's role in group improvisation rather than its possibilities as a solo vehicle. He plays fluently with four sticks, exploits the vibraphone's overtones, and sometimes controls manually the instrument's vanes (which vary its sound intensity). His piano playing (which may be heard on the first of his own albums) has a melodic strength and terseness reminiscent of Paul Bley.Roger Dean, The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, copyright Macmillan Reference Ltd 1988." ^ Hide Bio for Bobby Naughton • Show Bio for Joe Fonda "Joe Fonda is a composer, bassist, recording artist, interdisciplinary performer, producer and educator. Randy took uo the saxophone at a young age. When young Randy was sick with rheumatic fever Rhis father bought him a set of drums and he never looked back. Randy attended schools in Brooklyn and was a golden glove boxer, played baseball and ran track. Kaye was asked to cut his hair in high school and when he refused he was expelled. Mr. Kaye,a lifelong musician began playing professionally when he was only 15 years old! He started sitting in with players like Kenny Dorham and Roland Kirk and even sat in with Duke Ellington once. would have his father pick him up at the clubs after a gig. Randy was eventually hired by Tony Scott to play in his band along with Paul Chambers and Jaki Byard. Shortly after he was introduced to clarinetist Perry Robinson and Dave Izenson and went on to form the Unitrio band. Randy was also working with vocalist Sheila Jordan and in early 1969 he became the drummer for Jimi Hendrix, who was putting together a new band, favoring more experimental instrumental music. It was at this time that Randy joined renowned jazz musician and composer, Jimmy Giuffre whom he would play with for the next 25 years. It was Jimmy Giuffre that brought Randy to the Berkshires of Massachusetts where he lived and played for the rest of his life. Randy enjoyed spending time in Europe and toured with the French based band,"3 Windows"which included Remi Charmasson and Andre Jaume. He was an adjunct professor at New York University.
