"Expanding on the adventurous techniques that manifested their self-titled debut album, Chicago improvising trio, Hearsay returns with Glossolalia.

Comprised of visionary experimental sound artist Allen Moore, versatile cellist / guitarist / composer Ishmael Ali, and dynamic drummer Bill Harris, Hearsay cultivates a distinct and captivating aesthetic that traverses ethereal dimensions, gradually morphing rhythmic tapestries, and electrifying improvised soundscapes that bounce off of free jazz and textural noise music to land on a kind of wild and bounding avant-groove music that is as pleasing as it is avant-garde.

Their music elicits a mesmerizing blend of textures, as if conjured from another dimension, leaving listeners both spellbound and invigorated. Fractured but soulful blasts of uncanny soul emerge from Allen Moore's breathtaking, adventurous turntablist experiments to dance against -- and eventually with -- Bill Harris's propulsive drumming and Ishmael Ali's electrifying pursuits: he seems to discover melodies on his cello as much as create them.

Glossolalia is a testament to the boundless creativity that emerged during their fruitful recording sessions. Pushing the boundaries of experimental music even further, this latest offering embraces a vast sonic palette, seamlessly interweaving timbres, grooves, and a compelling interplay that defies categorization but evokes familiarity and wonder. The results are difficult to categorize but will be well-loved by fans of contemporary sonic adventurers like Valentina Magaletti and Maria Chavez or fellow Chicagoan, the late jaimie branch's work in Anteloper, as well as those who turn regularly to the rich and wild depths of the ESP-Disk discography or that of the AACM."-Amalgam

"In the hands of Chicago's Hearsay, time is putty. Turntablist Allen Moore, drummer Bill Harris and cellist/guitarist Ishmael Ali are forever meddling with the pace of passing seconds, urging eachother to hasten or throttle back, sabotaging the temptation of steady grooves, embarking on giddy tempo curves as if witnessed through warped glass. These six pieces were recorded in two days back in January 2021, although one imagines the music to have sent all attempts at time-tracking into disarray - clock hands drooping, sessions ending earlier than when they started...it's apt that the whole album concludes seemingly mid-phrase: Harris' drumstick lifted, Ali preparing for re-entry, Moore's turntable churn simmering nicely, then silence.Other forms of time-meddling are in play. Repetition looms large, and there's a tri-directional mimicry happening at all times: drums emulating the stuttered loops of the turntable, babbling cello harmonics inspiring sudden flutters of double-speed vinyl manipulation. The members repeat themselves as well as eachother - Harris' steady smacks of the snare drum on "Glossolalia II. Surface Tension" are like the objects of stoic lab trials, observing how a single sound lands on an undulating surface knobbled by plectrum scrapes and scrunched-up turntable rasp. Meanwhile, Moore's glitched playback of a spoken passage on "Glossolalia I. Precursor" deploys uneven repeats that make the words unintelligible, turning vowels into judders of faltered enunciation, shaking phonemes free of their semantic packets.It's an instrument configuration in which "louder" is always possible, and one can imagine a version of Glossolalia in which each track meets explosive ends. Hearsay seem aware of this, and their mutual point of focus remains the much more tantalising terrain of false starts and held tongues. Harris pops a toe on the brink of a 6/8 swing during the opener but never commits; Moore sticks largely to gritted-teeth turntable sputter, funk grooves like old paper crumpled in anxious hands; Ali's playing remains wonderfully controlled even at its snarling, agitated edges. They never over-explain, instead perching on the edge of several potential directions of travel. The magic of Hearsay is that they're always keeping their options open, dragging the listener around the swoop of the question mark for a full half-hour."-Jack Chuter, ATTN: Magazine

"Ishmael Ali is a first generation Filipino-Arab-American cellist, guitarist, improviser, composer, and electronic artist currently residing in Chicago. His work centers on exploring sound through improvisation, experimentation, collaboration, as well as a wide array of idiomatic approaches in an ever-changing, always-growing list of projects with diverse focuses and influences.Though varying drastically from group to group, a common thread in his work is the juxtaposition of seemingly disparate elements to create something new: both foreign and familiar.

In addition to performing, Mr. Ali is a co-founder and audio engineer at the recording space Marmalade in Chicago and was the founder and director of the now inoperative music and art space, Orotund Music. He continues to work as an organizer and promoter through the music series OBTC."

"Bill Harris is a percussionist, composer, improviser, and audio engineer from Pittsburgh currently based in Chicago. He also operates and produces for Amalgam, a Chicago-based collective.

Bill has been active in Chicago's music communities since 2011, working at the intersection of free improvisation, jazz, noise, rock, and country. His music has been presented at Constellation, Elastic Arts, The Bop Stop, The Hungry Brain, The Hideout, Experimental Sound Studios, Spot Tavern, Beat Kitchen, Empty Bottle, and Comfort Station.

Bill is humbled to have played or recorded with Jim Baker, Dave Rempis, Kent Kessler, Brian Sandstrom, Ed Wilkerson, Carol Genetti, Angel Bat Dawid, Jeb Bishop, Peter Maunu, Josh Berman, Brandon Lopez, Keefe Jackson, and Jason Roebke, among many other experimental and improvisatory musicians and artists.

Bill is constantly inspired by and thankful to work with his frequent collaborators: Ishmael Ali, Jake Wark, Timothee Quost, PT Bell, Gerrit Hatcher, Eli Namay, Matt Piet, Brianna Tong, Wills McKenna, David Fletcher, Jess McIntosh, Aaron Smith, Jeff Kimmel, Adam Shead, Molly Jones, Jakob Heinemann, and many others...

In 2015 he started Amalgam, a 100% artist-run collective and label dedicated to showcasing works of improvised and experimental music in Chicago. Bill is also an audio engineer working in both studio and live situations, and operates an independent studio in Chicago with engineering, mixing, mastering, and production credits on labels such as Amalgam, Astral Spirits, No Index, 577 Records and Ears&Eyes."
