"The Will Holshouser Trio's new album "Singing to a Bee" takes its title from the novel "Lovesong for the Giant Contessa" by Steven Tye Culbert. Considering the new language and narration techniques used by the Texan writer and the trio's own approach to music, combining formal aspects of several idioms in a new kind of hybrid you can't easily label - call it "world chamber jazz", if you want, but be warned: there's so much more not fitting in the description -, we're not surprised. There are other parallels, as you'll discover if you accept the sugestion made by the liner notes and decide to read Culbert: "Lovesong..." is a travel story lived by two teenagers, in the tradition of the best American literature (remember "On the Road"), with episodes about death and sex, and that dimension of discovery, of learning what life is all about, has similarities in this music recorded in a live concert (in Algarve, the sunny South of Portugal) by Holshouser, Ron Horton and David Phillips. Elements of Louisiana Cajun, klezmer, French musette, gypsy songs, and you name it - or not, because there are folk elements impossible to locate - are like metaphors, giving a sense of "place" and existentiality, a big word that names what's in question here: to find the essence of "being", something improvisation, even when structured and combined with compositional work, as is the case in "Singing to a Bee", can provide to both performers and listeners.
If you identify the accordion with Piazzolla (the bandoneon version), Galliano and Klucevsek, with this CD you definitely have to add Will Holshouser to that gallery of master players. Himself the son of a writer, this member of groups like Brock Mumford, David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness, Septeto Roberto Rodriguez and the Raymond Scott Orchestrette has a poetic sensibility, noticeable in the lyrical and almost romantic way he phrases and uses melodies. A surprise for a former student of Anthony Braxton at Wesleyan University, considering the geometrical jazz of his teacher. His cohorts are important pieces of the formula Holshouser proposes: trumpeter Ron Horton is becoming a frontline figure in the post-be bop / post-free jazz continuum, working with the likes of Andrew Hill, Lee Konitz, Jane Ira Bloom, Ben Allison and Michael Blake, among many others, with fundamental contributions to the Herbie Nichols Project, a super combo formed by the Jazz Composers Collective. Following in the steps of his father Barre, bassist David Phillips is already known for his sound with the bow - the truth is we don't find many double bass players in jazz at ease with this aspect of bass playing. The association of only these instruments, with no drums, results in a wide palette of sounds, giving a special attention to pitch and dynamics.
Like someone wrote in the press release of "Lovesong for the Giant Contessa", expect some "profanity" from this recording. That's what jazz needs these days, in order not to become a church and a credo."-Clean Feed
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Will Holshouser "Will Holshouser was given an accordion as a surprise when he was still young and impressionable. He has since found a unique niche for himself as an accordionist, improviser, and composer in many different areas of music. He tours regularly with jazz violinist Regina Carter and her band Reverse Thread. He also plays in a collaborative trio with Amsterdam-based improvisers, drummer Han Bennink & saxophonist/clarinetist Michael Moore. This group has a new CD out and has toured in Europe, the US and Africa. Will's long-standing trio features Ron Horton on trumpet and David Phillips on bass. Together since 1998, these three have developed a truly unified group sound. The trio has three CDs out on the Portuguese label Clean Feed. Their third CD, Palace Ghosts and Drunken Hymns was recorded in Portugal with the late, brilliant pianist Bernardo Sassetti as special guest. Will has also played with David Krakauer, Antony and the Johnsons, Martha Wainwright, Loudon Wainwright, Andy Statman, Phillip Johnston, Matt Munisteri & Brock Mumford, the Raymond Scott (tribute) Orchestrette, Roberto Rodriguez, Mark Morris Dance, New York City Ballet, Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, and many others. Will studied composition with Anthony Braxton and Bill Barron at Wesleyan University, where he received a grant to research Cajun and Creole music in Louisiana. After moving to New York in the early 1990s, he studied accordion with Dr. William Schimmel. He now lives in Brooklyn, New York with his wife and daughter. " ^ Hide Bio for Will Holshouser • Show Bio for Ron Horton "Since 1982, trumpeter Ron Horton has been an integral part of New York's flourishing jazz scene and he stands out both as an exemplary instrumentalist and as a highly progressive composer and arranger. Whether called upon as a sideman or as a leader of one of his own ensembles, he shows that he is committed to further expanding the existing perimeters of jazz. Horton has had many long musical associations with leaders such as saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom (1983-2000) and pianist Andrew Hill. He was a member of Hill's sextet from 1998 until 2003, and appears on the group's critically acclaimed cd, Dusk (Palmetto 2000). He was also musical director and co-arranger for Hill's big band, and is featured on the cd, A Beautiful Day (Palmetto 2002). Horton has also had an integral collaboration with New York's Jazz Composers Collective, going back to its inception in 1992, and appears on several cds by the other members of the group, such as Ben Allison and Michael Blake, as well as the collective's Herbie Nichols Project. In 1995, Horton went to the Library of Congress and uncovered over three dozen of Nichols' songs that had never been recorded. Several of these works appear on the three cds released by the HNP on Soul Note and Palmetto. Through his work with the JCC, Horton has received composing grants from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust and Meet the Composer. Ron Horton was born in 1960 in Bethesda, Maryland, and has been frequently called on as a sideman to perform and/or record with such artists as Lee Konitz, Will Holshouser, Rez Abbasi, Phillip Johnston, Andy Laster, Mick Rossi, Matt Wilson, Bill Gerhardt, Bill Mays, Peggy Stern, Allan Chase, Andy Biskin, Ted Nash, Jon Gordon, John McKenna, Walter Thompson, Diana Perez, Billy Newman, Mario Pavone, Tina Marsh, Maryanne DeProphetis, Landon Knoblock, Sam Bardfeld, Maria Guida, Abigail Riccards, Angie Sanchez, Kris Davis, Darcy James Argue and many others. In 1999, Horton released his debut cd, Genius Envy (OmniTone), featuring Jane Ira Bloom. All About Jazz said of the cd, "(Horton) shines as a formidable composer, arranger and leader. (It's) not difficult to discern why Horton is highly respected within jazz circles". Subtextures, Horton's first release on Fresh Sounds New Talent (FSNT-175) features pianist Kimbrough, bassist Allison and drummer Matt Wilson. It includes four new original compositions, as well as those by Kimbrough, Hill, Olivier Messiaen, and Frederic Chopin. The cd was selected by Jazzman magazine (France) for its CHOC award as one of the top cds of 2004. Jazzwise (UK) also chose it as one of the top cds of 2004. Horton's 2005 cd, Everything in a Dream (Fresh Sounds - FSNT 243), features his two-bass septet, which includes bassists John Hebert and Masa Kamaguchi as well as saxophonists Tony Malaby and John O'Gallagher, pianist Kimbrough and drummer Mike Sarin. Horton has taught master classes and workshops at The New School (New York), New England Conservatory (Boston), Univ. No.Carolina, Oxford University (UK). In October 2008, the Juilliard Concert Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Ted Nash, performed an evening of Andrew's Hill's music utilizing Ron's arrangements, which had been previously written for Hill's A Beautiful Day and for the Jazz Composers Collective." ^ Hide Bio for Ron Horton
