Descriptions, Reviews, &c.
The duo of Bennett & ito create non-linear songs of interesting rhythms, Ito's gentle voice, and unusual electronic elements. The tunes on Elipsis use impressionistic images driven by Bennett's oddly structured rhythms; "tongues untie, scream across the forehead of the storm, lightyears folding willful measures." Non-linear and unpredictable, Bennett explores the relationships of rhythmic elements within a minimal and compelling song world.

Other Recommended Releases:
Itakura, Bun / Mishio Ogawa
Stardust
(Ultragash)
A flowing twilight electro-jazz cover of the standard "Stardust" from Japanese guitarist Bun Itakura and vocalist Mishio Ogawa, expanding the melody and Ogawa's phrasing with encompassing electronics and percussion from Takefumi Kobayashi; backed with an experimental "Mystery Making Factory" using paint brush, harmonic tone guitar, and mbira.
Weston, Matt
Sparky 3 [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(4 Men With Beards)
The 3rd installment in percussionist & composer Matt Weston's serialized opera for percussion ensemble + electronics, a set of narratives and counter-narratives that explore mental health struggles as they develop over time in varying circumstances, realized through a combination of site-specific graphic, multidimensional and instantaneous scores.
Semantics (Elliott Sharp / Ned Rothenberg / Samm Bennett)
Bone Of Contention
(Klanggalerie)
Including three previously unreleased live tracks, one of Downtown NY's supergroups of drummer Samm Bennett, reed & wind player Ned Rothenberg and guitar & bass player Elliott Sharp's 2nd album is reissued, bringing this collection of seemingly endless possibility in improvisation back to the foreground, sounding as modern today as it did in the percolating creativity of 1987.
Myers, David Lee
Intervals / Interludes
(pulsewidth)
Like passages through an electronic corridor, New York electronic artist David Lee Myers (Arcane Device) presents a series of "interludes"--long passages of rich electronic sound--and "intervals" of punctuated rhythms, described by Myers as: "In-between spaces for catching one's breath amid frigid landscapes, existential pauses, and mercurial pools of aboriginal pleadings."
Wong, Theresa
Venice Is a Fish
(Euphorbia Records)
Five pieces composed as a diary manifest in song from Bay Area cellist and singer Theresa Wong, reflecting on her time in Venice through labyrinthine melodic and rhythmic pathways, adding piano and the Japanese 5-string tonkori instrument to add exotic flavor to each eclectic song, blurring genres as Wong's impressions and expression lets each song lead where it must.
Myers, David Lee
Reduced to a Geometrical Point
(Cronica)
Using feedback matrices, oscillator banks and multi-processing, NYC sound and feedback artist David Lee Myers, A.K.A. Arcane Device, references the quote from metaphysics scholar Frithjof Schuon--"You must detach your life from an awareness of the multiple and reduce it to a geometrical point before God"--which he manifests in four focused works of rich, slowly evolving sound.
Weston, Matt
Sparky 1 [CASSETTE]
(7272music)
Matt Weston (Arthur Brooks Ensemble V, Arc Pair) initiates a series of limited cassette releases with this solo album, seven works of percussion using traditional and idiosyncratic percussive sources with a pensive pace and somewhat irascible attitude, each piece fully notated and executed live in the studio, using a similar aesthetic to link each work.
Myers, David Lee
Prototype Of The Veil
(pulsewidth)
David Lee Myers began creating feedback music in 1989, originally under the name Arcane Device, developing unique approaches to harnessing feedback between audio devices in ways their manufactures did not intend; since 2014 he has used a set of new devices that allow intense control and beauty through vibrational interactions, as heard in this, his 18th solo album of feedback music.
Osborne, Brian
Decorous Novelties
(Heat Retention Records)
Using metal, glass, wood, and plastic, percussionist Brian Osborne (The Gate, Hatchers) offers twelve tracks of interweaving layers of simplicity and complexity, clarity and haze, many pieces initiating with deceptive simplicity and insinuating themselves in unique ways, all performed live in the studio and presented with no overdubs or affects.
Cong, Zhao
Rotating, Rotating
(Hitorri)
Three solo tracks by Zhao Cong, who develops suspenseful sonic environments over which she inventively and patiently adds daily objects, sounds from her mixer, condenser microphone, her voice, a cardpaper tube, no input feedback, contact microphones, and a home ballroom light, each piece evolving with a unique disposition towards certain associative sounds; fascinating.
Weston, Matt
Searchlight Swings b/w Is That Helicopter Over Our House? [7-inch' VINYL]
(7272music)
Percussionist and electronics artist Matt Weston (Arthur Brooks Ensemble V, Arc Pair) in a 7" release showcasing his playing skills over his own notation systems employing additional dimensions of pre-and post-gestural strategies, using written standard notation and visual cues based on multiple and simultaneous, graphic scores.
Dollshot
Dollshot
(Underwolf)
An unusual and thickly strung album bridging dark rock and improvised music from saxophonist Noah Kaplan, bassist and prepared bassis Giacomo Merega, bassist and prepared painist Wes Matthews, and vocalist Rosalie Kaplan.
