"As the title suggests, this quartet has been recorded in the dining room of Maison Bustros in Beirut. Their music basically moves in spurts, surrounded by a large ambience which makes it akin to a field recording and - for the same reason - it is one of those canvases containing the most disparate verisimilitudes with a "regular" listening setting, being perfectly integrated with everyday's options. The casual conversations and sheer kneadings of the first two sections reach for AMM-derived territories, only with less restriction as everything remains undetermined in a pretty impassible reciprocal observation; yet the final movement is beatifully intense, with Matthews' bass clarinet and Rives' soprano patiently breathing in a disclosure of intentions which find their definitive affirmation in the very last minutes, where electricity and air finally find their point of junction in intuitive spinosities."-Massimo Ricci (Touching Extremes)

Artist Biographies

"In 1989, after completing his doctorate at Columbia University in New York, French-born American musician Wade Matthews moved to Madrid and became active on the international improv scene. Drawing on his work at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center (His doctoral dissertation was on improvisation guided by electronic sounds) he approached the bass clarinet and alto flute as "acoustic synthesizers," rethinking their sonic possibilities, phrasing, and relation to breath in a musical language based on real-time creation. When faster processors made laptop synthesis viable, Matthews gradually abandoned the woodwinds and returned to his first love, tweaking a virtual synthesizer to allow very rapid control of sound parameters for solo playing and dialog with others. In 2007, he founded INTERMEDIA 28 with photographer Adam Lubroth and guitarist Julio Camarena. There, he began to combine field recordings with electronic synthesis in a 2-computer setup that has since become his main instrument.

Matthews has presented his work on five continents, including performances at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Center for the Arts in Mexico City, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Reina Sofía Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, The Stone, in New York; Fylkingen, in Stockholm, and concerts and festivals in London, Paris, Berlin, San Francisco, Montevideo, Barcelona, Beirut, Cape Verde, Lisbon, Dublin, Oslo, etc. Besides his concerts, Matthews is interested in sharing ideas about music and his activity as a lecturer and visiting professor has taken him to the Paris Conservatory, the University of California, San Diego; the California Art Institute, Columbia University, the Universidad de las Americas in Puebla, Mexico; the American University of Beirut, Limerick University in Ireland, and many, many others."

"Stéphane Rives is part of the current of an improvisation of materials and textures more than games and themes. More trivially, a fucking sound that torments the eardrum and drives the hammers into a panic, opening up gulfs in the understanding. Double simultaneous sounds, high pitch in the splendid isolation of the peaks and breath close to asthma, close to sinewave and the wind which passes in force under the door. The result is a strange almost disturbing abstraction, so much we no longer hear a saxophone but something quite different, without being able to name this something else.

Do not believe that there is a feat here, that in the end it would only be due to technique, to a power of dissimulation, that would be little in the eyes of music. In the granulations, we reach such a decomposition of what constitutes music for academies, that we are literally stunned, pierced by this sonic twist, a metal sander applied to the human ear, revolving sounds tearing shavings from our cultural foundations, uncertainty of what and how."-Michel Henritzi - Review & Corrected
