Trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith brings together a remarkable collection of collaborators for Constellations And Hemispheres, a five-track album assembled from sessions recorded between 2017 and 2022 at Firehouse 12 in New Haven, Connecticut. Moving through four ensemble configurations, from an intimate acoustic trio to a densely layered electric octet, Smith explores contrasting dimensions of his musical language, balancing contemplative restraint with powerful collective improvisation and the expansive possibilities of studio composition.
The opening "Dark Energy" features Smith alongside pianist Sylvie Courvoisier and drummer Marcus Gilmore, developing an atmospheric dialogue of spacious trumpet phrases, searching piano figures, and subtle rhythmic movement. The trio's interplay emphasizes the expressive possibilities of silence and suggestion, building tension through carefully measured gestures rather than overt displays of virtuosity. These musicians return within the album's centerpiece, the 22-minute "Dark Matter, Particles of Light, Mirror of the Unseen," where their acoustic textures interact with the amplified force of a larger ensemble.
Elsewhere, Smith draws on an exceptional group of longtime associates and newer collaborators, including vibraphonist Bobby Naughton, electric guitarist Lamar Smith, bassists Bill Laswell and Melvin Gibbs, drummers Pheeroan akLaff and Marcus Gilmore, and percussionists Mauro Refosco and Brian Jawara Gray. The electric instrumentation evokes aspects of Miles Davis's exploratory fusion period while incorporating the rhythmic density of funk, the harmonic freedom of avant-garde jazz, and Smith's distinctive sense of space and melodic development. Naughton's luminous vibraphone provides a striking contrast to the grinding guitar textures of Lamar Smith, whose heavily distorted playing adds a raw, almost psychedelic dimension to the music.
"Lake Tanganyika" offers a brief atmospheric interlude before the expansive "Dark Matter," while "Deep Canyons on Mars" pushes into darker territory, propelled by the formidable combination of Laswell's and Gibbs's electric basses, abrasive guitar textures, and layered percussion. The closing "Meditation on Love" finds a more reflective balance between collective intensity and lyrical expression, allowing the album's contrasting energies to settle into a spacious conclusion.
Rather than simply documenting individual performances, Smith reshapes material from multiple recording sessions into a cohesive musical statement, using the studio as an extension of his compositional imagination. The resulting album moves freely between acoustic delicacy and electric turbulence, structured composition and spontaneous invention, revealing the continuing vitality of an artist whose music embraces both the meditative and the fiercely experimental.

In 2009, New York Times critic Ben Ratliff included Gilmore in his list of drummers who are "finding new ways to look at the drum set, and at jazz itself", saying, "he created that pleasant citywide buzz when someone new and special blows through New York clubs and jam sessions".. Marcus Gilmore is the grandson of Roy Haynes, who gave him his first drum kit at the age of ten, and the nephew of Graham Haynes. A graduate of the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, Marcus also received full ride scholarships to the Juilliard School of Music and Manhattan School of Music. He has been touring professionally since the age of sixteen. Marcus has performed with some of today's best known contemporary jazz artists, including Chick Corea, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Nicholas Payton, Steve Coleman, Vijay Iyer, and Ambrose Akinmusire. He is also embarking on solo projects with his bands "Actions Speak" and "Silhouwav." He has been named a protégé of the 2018 Rolex Mentors And Protégé project. In August 2020, Gilmore contributed to the live streamed recording of the singer Bilal's EP VOYAGE-19, created remotely during the COVID-19 lockdowns. It was released the following month with proceeds from its sales going to participating musicians in financial hardship from the lockdown. [...] Like his grandfather, Gilmore draws upon a wide variety of influences from Tony Williams to free jazz drummer Milford Graves. When talking about Graves in Modern Drummer, he said "A lot of Milford's playing deals with rhythm, but not in a very metric way-it's non-metric, a lot of waves. It's still melodic, even more so because it's very linguistic. Milford doesn't even really play snares. He keeps the snares off. His drumming sounds very melodic and very lyrical. It sounds like a language." He has specifically cited Elvin Jones on the album Speak No Evil and Tony Williams' Lifetime as influences." ^ Hide Bio for Marcus Gilmore • Show Bio for Bobby Naughton "Bobby Naughton is self-taught as a performer and composer. After playing in rock-and-roll groups he took up the vibraphone in 1966, and in the late 1960s played with Perry Robinson, Sheila Jordan, and others. He continued to work intermittently with Robinson while recording as a leader from 1969 on his own label, Otic; in 1971 he wrote a score for Hans Richter's silent film Everyday (1929). He played with the Jazz Composer's Orchestra in 1972 and Leo Smith (from the mid 1970s), and joined the Creative Music Improvisors Forum in New Haven, Connecticut. Naughton's vibraphone playing, like that of Gunter Hampel, emphasizes the instrument's role in group improvisation rather than its possibilities as a solo vehicle. He plays fluently with four sticks, exploits the vibraphone's overtones, and sometimes controls manually the instrument's vanes (which vary its sound intensity). His piano playing (which may be heard on the first of his own albums) has a melodic strength and terseness reminiscent of Paul Bley.Roger Dean, The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, copyright Macmillan Reference Ltd 1988." ^ Hide Bio for Bobby Naughton • Show Bio for Lamar Smith Lamar Smith is an American guitarist, composer, and improviser whose work explores the intersection of avant-garde jazz, electric fusion, funk, and experimental music. The grandson of trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith, he has performed with his grandfather since 2009 and participated in ensembles including the Organic Ensemble and Silver Orchestra. His guitar work appears on recordings including Najwa and Constellations And Hemispheres, where his use of distortion, electronic effects, and expressive improvisation brings a powerful electric dimension to the music. As a bandleader, he has presented his own compositions and improvisational projects, including performances at Wadada Leo Smith's CREATE Festival alongside Melvin Gibbs and Pheeroan akLaff. ^ Hide Bio for Lamar Smith • Show Bio for Bill Laswell "Over the course of some three decades, visionary bassist-producer Bill Laswell has been one of the most prolific and restlessly creative forces in contemporary music. A sound conceptualist who has always been a step ahead of the curve, he has put his inimitable stamp on nearly 3,000 recording projects by such artists as Mick Jagger, Yoko Ono, Iggy Pop, Laurie Anderson, Brian Eno, Bootsy Collins, Nine Inch Nails, Motorhead, Peter Gabriel, Blur, The Ramones, George Clinton, Pharaoh Sanders, The Dalai Lama, Matisyahu, Angelique Kidjo, DJ Krush, RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ, Sting, The Last Poets, Afrika Bambaataa, Julian Schnabel, Whitney Houston, Manu Dibango, Fela Kuti and most notably Herbie Hancock, who collaborated with Laswell for the pivotal 1983 smash-hit single "Rock-It" which introduced scratching to the mainstream, inspired a generation of turntablists and gave the great jazz pianist instant street credibility among the burgeoning hip-hop cognoscenti. Laswell's sense of creative daring as a producer was further demonstrated on several recordings that have kept him on the cutting edge, including Afrika Bambaataa's collaboration with John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten of Sex Pistols fame) on World Destruction and PiL's Album (which brought together an unlikely pairing of drumming greats Ginger Baker and Tony Williams, synth-pop pioneer Ryuichi Sakamoto of Yellow Magic Orchestra fame and rising guitar star Steve Vai). His spoken word collaborations with William S. Burroughs and expatriate writer-composer Paul Bowles have gone against the grain of music industry trends while his radical remixes (or re-constructions) of landmark recordings by Miles Davis (Panthalassa), Carlos Santana (Divine Light), Bob Marley (Dreams of Freedom) and a vast scan of dub-related and atmospheric ambient projects have gone on to further defined Laswell's presence as a revolutionary ikonoklast. Bill Laswell has helped in generating several innovative recording labels such as Celluloid, Subharmonic, Black Arc, and Innerhythmic. Along with Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records (Bob Marley and U2), he established the AXIOM label in 1989. M.O.D. Technologies, his most recent imprint is releasing projects by Method Of Defiance, Lee "Scratch" Perry, PRAXIS, Garrison Hawk with Sly & Robbie, Bernie Worrell, The Process (with Red Hot Chili Peppers' drummer Chad Smith and pianist Jon Baptiste) and progressive/futuristic music from Ethiopia (CDs/DVDs). As a player, Laswell's bass lines resound with rare authority on groundbreaking projects by Tabla Beat Science (with Zakir Hussain and Ustad Sultan Khan), his avant-funk band Material, the apocalyptic assault of Last Exit (with Sonny Sharrock), his progressive dub effected Method of Defiance and the throbbingly intense power trios, Massacre (with Fred Frith and Charles Hayward), Painkiller (with John Zorn and Mick Harris), Praxis (with Buckethead and Brain), Blixt (with Raoul Bjorkenheim and Morgan Agren) and the latest (2014) Bladerunner (with John Zorna and Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo). Laswell's artistic reach has consistently extended to the continent of Africa, creating ground-breaking, evolutionary snd controversial recording projects in Morocco, Senegal, Mali, Gambia and most recently, Ethiopia where he has established a base for developing new as well as legendary artists, just as he did in the South Bronx some 30 years ago. A veteran of 300 plus journeys to Japan, where he has worked with everyone from The Gagaku Orchestra (Japan's ancient music, only played for emperors for 1500 years), to avant-jazz, rock, hip-hop and DJ culture. An eternal musical renegade, Bill Laswell has always played by his own rules." ^ Hide Bio for Bill Laswell • Show Bio for Melvin Gibbs "Melvin Gibbs is an American bass guitarist, composer, and producer who has appeared on close to 200 albums in diverse genres of music. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Gibbs attended Medgar Evers College and the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. After attending and graduating from the Berklee College of Music, Gibbs first came to public notice as a member of the group Defunkt which was a mainstay of the early 1980s downtown New York scene. Throughout most of the 1980s, he played in drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society alongside guitarist Vernon Reid, as well as playing with guitarist Sonny Sharrock and saxophonist John Zorn. Additionally with Jackson and guitarist Bill Frisell he was also a member of the group Power Tools. Gibbs co-led the band Eye and I with D.K. Dyson who also co-founded the Black Rock Coalition of which he is also an original member. He was a member of the avantmetal Rollins Band from 1993 to about 1998, and again in 2006 when the group briefly reformed. As a member of the Rollins Band, he performed at Woodstock '94 in 1994 and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1995. Gibbs has also recorded with hip-hop artists Dead Prez, Brazilian artists Caetano Veloso and Marisa Monte, Latin jazz artist Eddie Palmieri, Nigerian artist Femi Kuti, and guitarist Marc Ribot. He has also produced albums by guitarist/singer Arto Lindsay and turntablist DJ Logic. Gibbs formed the Punk-Funk All-Stars with James Blood Ulmer, Defunkt leader Joseph Bowie, Vernon Reid and Ronald Shannon Jackson. He co-leads the band Harriet Tubman with guitarist Brandon Ross and drummer JT Lewis. His other current projects include Melvin Runs the Hoodoo Down with guitarist Pete Cosey and keyboard player John Medeski, the JFM Trio featuring guitarist Jeff Parker and percussionist Francisco Mora, and the Geechee Seminoles, a duo featuring Gibbs and drummer/hand-body percussionist/dancer David Pleasant. Ancients Speak, the first album by Melvin Gibbs' Elevated Entity, was released on March 17, 2009, by Livewired Music. In 2009, he joined the group "SociaLybrium", alongside Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee keyboard player Bernie Worrell and long time Parliament-Funkadelic guitarist and musical director DeWayne "Blackbyrd" McKnight as well as J.T. Lewis on drums. The group's album, For You/For Us/For All was released by Livewired Music in December 2009. Gibbs took on the role of record producer while with the Rollins Band in the 1990s. He worked in that capacity, producing records for other artists on Rage Records." ^ Hide Bio for Melvin Gibbs • Show Bio for Mauro Refosco "Mauro Refosco is a professional percussionist and noisemaker who performs and records with artists such as David Byrne, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Thom Yorke's Atoms for Peace. After beginning his touring career in 1994 as Byrne's percussionist, he returned to NYC and joined cult creative ensemble The Lounge Lizards, playing experimental punk jazz and more with bandleader John Lurie. In between stints with Byrne and several other in demand projects he formed his band, Forro in the Dark, which has recorded four full-length albums and performed at major domestic and international festivals. Mauro's studio, SuperLegal (pron. "Super-leh-GOW"), located in Bushwick, Brooklyn houses his vast arsenal of instruments and is fully equipped with the latest versions of Pro Tools, Live, and an array of high-end mics and pre-amps. Artists and producers that have worked at SuperLegal include David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto, They Might Be Giants, Blonde Redhead, Martha Wainwright, Cibo Matto, Madeline Peyroux, Pat Dillet, Mario Caldato Jr, Andres Levin, Kassin, Craig Street and many others. He has also composed music and soundtracks for movies, television, fashion shows and Off-Broadway plays." ^ Hide Bio for Mauro Refosco • Show Bio for Brian Jawara Gray Brian "Jarawa" Gray is an American percussionist, educator, and cultural organizer from New Haven, Connecticut, whose work encompasses avant-garde jazz, African percussion traditions, and contemporary improvised music. Beginning his career as a teenager with Dwight Andrews's ensemble Deja Vu Noir, he performed alongside musicians including Pheeroan akLaff, Jay Hoggard, and Geri Allen. His instrumental practice includes congas, djembe, dun dun drums, and other percussion, drawing on extensive study of West African, Afro-Cuban, and Afro-Brazilian rhythmic traditions. A founder and musical director of several African drum and dance ensembles and co-founder of the Healing Drum Society, Gray has also developed educational programs connecting traditional percussion with contemporary musical practice. His collaborative work includes performances and recordings with artists such as Wadada Leo Smith, Oliver Lake, and Jay Hoggard. ^ Hide Bio for Brian Jawara Gray • Show Bio for Pheeroan akLaff "Pheeroan akLaff was born in Detroit, Michigan January 27, 1955, and named Paul, by his parents in honor of Paul Robeson one of their favorite musicians. Though his parents did not play instruments they enjoyed dancing with the Lunceford, Basie, Eckstein, and Ellington bands. His mother, distantly related to Wings Over Jordan choir director Glenn T. Settlle, was a fan of classical repertoire. His father is a Jazz fan and audiophile. This spawned a musical household in which all seven children had music lessons at some stage of their development. Eric, the eldest became a concert pianist and choir conductor. Largely an autodidact, with some years at Eastern Michigan University, Pheeroan studied privately with Randall Hicks (New Jersey Symphony Orchestra), and "Pistol" Allen (Motown). Working in ensembles led by arranger Travis Biggs, at EMU brought about his first recording date; a 45rpm for local R&B singer Major Lasky titled Remember Me Always (1973), a favorite of radio station WGPR. In 1975 he relocated to New Haven Connecticut, and while auditing the African Art class of Robert Ferris Thompson, akLaff established a connection with Rashied Ali, drummer of John Coltrane's late ensembles. While kindlling the band DejaVu with his peers, he also initiated a tenure with Wadada Leo Smith, introducing him to performances and recordings with Oliver Lake, Anthony Davis, Henry Threadgill, Sonny Sharrock, Andrew Hill, Cecil Taylor, Yamashita Yosuke, Amiri Baraka, Liu Sola, Tom Pierson, and Anthony Braxton, among many internationally acclaimed composers. As a young artist Pheeroan akLaff toured several countries of Africa, Asia and Europe. He produced a wave of Funk and Reggae influenced performances and recordings in the 1980's. after his Urban West African music immersion in Abidjan, Cote D"Ivoire with the Marie Rose Guiraud dance troupe. He met Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Sonny Okosun, and Steve Rhodes with scholar Dr. Frank T. Fairfax III, in Lagos Nigeria. He performed for the U.S. State Department with Oliver Lake and Jump Up; in Malawi, Swaziland, Cote D'Ivoire Togo and Liberia, and with Jay Hoggard; in Morocco, Syria, Jordan, Sudan, Egypt and India.
