Artist Biographies

"Saxophonist and composer Nick Mazzarella has been a consistent presence in Chicago's music scene since the early 2000s, and his regular performances there represent an aesthetically unique contribution to the city's rich jazz and improvised music culture. His working trio and quintet have served as the primary vehicles for his endeavors as a composer and leader, while as a collaborator or sideman he has performed and recorded with such artists as Tomeka Reid, Makaya McCraven, Hamid Drake, Joshua Abrams, and Rob Mazurek. He has released recordings as a leader on Nessa Records, Clean Feed Records, and the International Anthem Recording Company imprint, among others, and has performed throughout the United States and Scandinavia. Mazzarella also curates two concert series: the Anagram Series, presented weekly at Elastic Arts in Chicago, and the Ratchet Series, presented monthly at Cafe Mustache in Chicago."

"Silvia Bolognesi is a double bass player, composer and arranger.

Graduated in double bass at the R.Franci Institute of Siena with Maestro Andrea Granai, perfecting with Maestro Alberto Bocini.She approached jazz studying at the Siena Jazz Accademy with Paolino dalla Porta, Furio di Castri and Ferruccio Spinetti.

The most significant encounters in his musical training are those with William Parker, Muhal Richard Abrams, Lawrence "Butch" Morris, Roscoe Mitchell and Antony Braxton.

Winner of the "Top Jazz 2010", by "Musica Jazz" as best new talent and in the same year winner of the "In Sound" trophy for double bass category.

She leads several bands: Open Combo, Almond Tree, Xilo Ensemble, Ju-Ju Sounds, Fonterossa Open Orchestra, Young Shouts, Sly Family...

Since 2009 she is part of the international string trio Hear In Now with Tomeka Reid on cello and Mazz Swift on violin and vocals; with this trio they completed Roscoe Mitchell's sextet in his Homage to John Coltrane in 2017.She's part of the "Art Ensemble of Chicago 50th Anniversary" special project.

In 2010 she founded her own label "Fonterossa Records".

She teaches double bass and combo class at the Siena Jazz Academy and at "Associazione Mosaico" in Colle Val d'Elsa (Siena).

Since 2016 she is part of the "European exchange-Erasmus +" program for the Conservatory of Maastricht (Holland), Tbilisi (Georgia), Riga (Latvia), Birmingham (UK). She runs workshops on Improvisation and "Conduction" since 2008."

"Drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger and performer Cristiano Calcagnile has built a international reputation collaborating with great names of new jazz, contemporary music and pop music as well.

His work is well know in the European experimental scene and his aesthetic is a well balanced melange that remains connected to his attitude to research, developing boarder lined music.

He recorded for label as EMI, Polygram, Edel, Sony, Auand, Amirani Records, Phonometak Labs, RareNoise, Die Schachtel, El Gallo Rojo, Caligola, GoodFellas, Label Bleu and Black Saint among the others.

He extensively tours all over the world invited by international festivals and venues for jazz, rock and avant-garde music. He played at London Jazz festival, Meldown Festival, Vortex, Bimhuis, Porgy&Bess, North Sea festival, Polar Spectacle, Umbria jazz, Novi Sad, Melbourne, Helsinki, Jakarta, Tunis, Mumbai and Lisboa.

He's now leading of the MULTIKULTI ensemble which have produced a couple of CD "guided" to Don Cherry's music: "Multikulty Cherry On" 2016 and "The Gift of Togetherness" 2019 - both for Caligola records."

"Emanuele Marsico was born on June 28, 1996, began his studies of the trumpet privately at the age of 14. He enrolled in the same year at the G-s. Conservatory. Martucci of Salerno, where he obtained a diploma in Classical Trumpet in 2016. On May 14, 2022, he graduated from Siena jazz University. The first work experience takes place with the "Fenaroli" winds symphony orchestra of Lanciano for which he worked for 3 years, with about 150 concerts.

In 2017 he began the collaboration with the "Young Jazz Orchestra Campana" with which he participated in the "Jazzit Fest" and with which he recorded the album "All of Us", released in December 2022 for Alfa Music. In 2018, in the corridors of Siena Jazz, he met the double bass player of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Silvia Bolognesi and shortly after he began playing with his new quartet "Young Shouts".

In 2019 they recorded the first album entitled "aLive shouts - An omage to Bessie Jones". In 2021 they recorded the second album entitled "A frame in the crowd". In 2023 he made his debut as a composer and leader of the group Momo Ensamble, with which he recorded the album entitled "Story of a Feminiello". He collaborates with the likes of: Silvia Bolognesi, Eric Mingus, Nick Mazzarella, Veronica Swift, Piero Frassi, Dave Burrell, Nico Gori, Andrea Beninati, Sabir Mateen, Camilla Battaglia, Alessandro Paternesi, Luca Barbarossa, Fabrizio Bosso, Michael Mayo, Bernardo Guerra, Nick the nightfly.
