Swiss guitarist Florian Stoffner presents six concentrated solo improvisations on Bijou, turning the electric guitar into a source of clipped resonance, metallic vibration, fractured melody and carefully controlled silence. Recorded by Stoffner at Bee Street Studio, the album follows earlier solo recordings including ...and Sorry and Norman, while bringing the refined attention to texture and spatial detail heard in his recent trio with saxophonist John Butcher and drummer Chris Corsano into a more exposed, intimate setting.

That trio's albums Braids and The Glass Changes Shape demonstrated Stoffner's ability to place concise, highly individual guitar gestures inside a closely interwoven collective language. On Bijou, he retains that sensitivity to pacing and interaction, but must create the contrasts and responses himself. Notes are allowed to decay into silence before being interrupted by muted attacks, dry harmonics, scraped surfaces or sudden electric outbursts; brief melodic figures emerge, hesitate and are reshaped before they can settle into recognizable patterns.

The title's suggestion of a small, finely worked object suits music built from compact details rather than grand declarations. Stoffner avoids both conventional solo-guitar virtuosity and continuous abstraction, developing each improvisation through a precise balance of sound and absence. The result is a focused statement in which touch, amplification, resonance and the physical mechanics of the guitar become equal parts of an unusually personal improvisational vocabulary.
