Illusion Of Safety: Float (Full Spectrum)

Artist Biographies

"Since 1983, on the labels Complacency, Die Stadt, Experimedia, Odd Size, Silent, Soleilmoon, Staalplaat, Tesco, Korm, Drone, no part of it, and Waystyx, Dan Burke and his conspirators under the Illusion Of Safety banner have traversed over 40+ full-length releases, exploring nearly every facet of the avant sound plane. From early industrial pop deconstruction to blindingly minimal sound art to densely surreal found-sound collage, each unique approach bends and reconstitutes the expectations and possibilities of its realm.

Plowing through layered field recordings, deeply rumbling tones, and eerie electroacoustic sounds, Illusion Of Safety moves seamlessly between cut-and-paste collages and manufactured drones, creating immersive sonic landscapes. It's easy to get lost in these deep passages-a surreal trip that incorporates outsourced sounds from around the world, encompassing everything from abstract analogue synthesizer explorations to chaotic digital noise and voltage fluctuations.

This ever-evolving sound generates excitement in the bowels of analog equipment, fusing raucous guitar improvisation with the rattle and chilling moan of iron sheets, creaking floorboards, resonances, fluctuations, and scraps of samples in perpetual motion. Driven by some miraculous force, the author constructs monumental music-nervous and anxiety-soaked yet deeply hypnotic, demanding attention while unsettling the listener. The sounds scatter in all directions, like circles on water, yet remain anchored in a continuous, almost ritualistic form-sometimes easily detectable, other times only faintly perceptible.

With over 300 live performances across Europe and the U.S., Illusion Of Safety has appeared at No Fun 2008, the Wrocław Industrial Music Festival in 2009, Sonic Circuits in 2010, with Shen Wei Dance Arts in 2011 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, and at the Crisis Data Transfer Pre-Party in October 2023.

Outside of Illusion Of Safety, Burke has collaborated with Jim O'Rourke, Jon Mueller, Randy Greif, Darin Gray, Z'EV, Cheer-Accident, Thomas Dimuzio, Kevin Drumm, Bill Horist, and others."

Yiyuan, Liang / Li Daiguo
Sonic Talismans [VINYL]
(Full Spectrum)
Bridging Chinese folklore and avant-garde exploration, yangqin innovator Liang YiYuan and multi-instrumentalist Li Daiguo conjure an entrancing tapestry of shadowy textures and melodic splinters on this long-form collaboration — recorded in Yunnan and blending traditional Eastern timbres with free improvisation and experimental form in a deeply narrative, otherworldly sonic journey.
Olencki, Weston
Pearls Ground Down To Powder [VINYL]
(Full Spectrum)
Weston Olencki deconstructs and reimagines the banjo across two longform compositions, transforming it into a percussive, polyrhythmic engine and a harmonic resonator, navigating glitch-driven algorithmic textures and richly detuned sonorities, juxtaposing the kinetic, minimalist grooves of "The Rocks Are Different, Here" with the spectral, ring-modulated drones of "Brothers".
Shiroishi / Tiesenga
Empty Vessels [VINYL]
(Full Spectrum)
A powerful duo of resonant harmonic interaction between Patrick Shiroishi & Marta Tiesenga, both on soprano sax, recorded in an underground tunnel below the Jazz Cat in Monterey Park, CA during the pandemic, the tunnel's natural reverb becoming a 'third performer' in shaping an evocative sonic dialogue that contrasts isolation and connection through long tones, fragmented utterances, and immersive resonance.
Wick, Jacob Ensemble
Something in Your Eyes
(Full Spectrum)
Trumpeter & vocalist Jacob Wick leads an ensemble of Mexico City's vibrant experimental musicians with Gibran Andrade, Mabe Fratti, Alina Maldonado, Saul Ojeda, and Federico Sanchez, in a deconstructed exploration of pop, jazz, and country, transforming fragments of songs by Emmylou Harris, Alice Coltrane, Kylie Minogue, and Billie Holiday into improv scores that transform tradition into new sonic forms.
Bruckmann / Heule / Nishi-Smith / Rivero
Negligiblism
(Full Spectrum)
A visceral and texturally rich exploration of free improv from longtime Bay Area collaborators Danishta Rivero (voice, electronics), Kanoko Nishi-Smith (koto), Jacob Felix Heule (bass drum, drum set), and Kyle Bruckmann (English horn, electronics), blending raw acoustic noise, extended techniques, and deep sonic interactions into a dynamic and unpredictable suite of expressive intensity.
Borden, TJ / Steve Flato
In the Garden of Eating
(Full Spectrum)
Taking ironic inspiration from StockhausenŐs conceptual extremes, cellist Tyler J. Borden and guitarist Steve Flato fuse cello, microtonal guitar, modular synth, Gizmotron, and electronics in an absurdist yet introspective performance score, immersively weaving subtle textures and just-intonation harmonies shaped by physical and psychological excesses around food and discomfort.
Lindorff-Ellery, Evan
Church Recordings from Monhegan [CASSETTE]
(Full Spectrum)
Recorded at Monhegan Community Church on a remote Maine island, this environmental work by Evan Lindorff-Ellery captures the interplay between improvised percussive textures and the resonant acoustics of the space, using frame drum, piano, acoustic guitar, bells, and found objects to leverage the church's natural reverb, while ambient sounds filter through its windows.
