Drawing on live performances shaped by changing audiences, weather, and landscape, J.J. Gregg's sitar and Ravi Albright's tabla unfold through intricate rhythmic cycles, resonant drones, and spacious melodic exploration, balancing North Indian classical traditions with an open improvisational sensibility that lets environmental sound and spontaneous interaction become part of the music's quietly immersive flow.

Recorded live at Minto Island Growers' Farmstand in Salem, Oregon, from 2018 to 2024, except track 9 recorded at the Yoga Library in Salem, Oregon, in 2024.
"It's raining. Fifteen people and a dog crowd into a food tent listening to amplified sitar. They're totally silent for almost twenty minutes of sonic exploration and ambient interpolation. With a few barks and eager applause the last tones of Raag Madhmadh Sarang hang in the moist fall air. 'Minto and Elsewhere' captures this and more, with eight improvisations inspired by the audience and the landscape. Thanks to the compact, multi-track recording setup designed by engineer Mark Yoshizumi, 'Minto and Elsewhere' illuminates the unique intensity and passion shared in each of these live improvisations. Inspired by Frank Zappa's 'Roxy and Elsewhere', the sitar and tabla on this album deliver a tour de force of intricate beats and intriguing sounds.
Back in 2018, I started performing out at this Organic Farm in Salem, Minto Island Growers. It's on a little hill overlooking some beautiful farmland full of vegetables. There's a playground ("fun to play with friends at, good to listen to music from"), food cart, and wood-fired pizza. Minto and Elsewhere presents eight pieces recorded live between 2018 and 2024, seven of which I recorded at Minto and the final track recorded at the Yoga Library in Salem in 2024. The four sitar and tabla tracks feature Ravi Albright on tabla.
I started recording most of my shows from 2015 onwards on a Zoom H6 portable recorder. Over time I moved from one mic or the onboard stereo mic to setups with 4-6 mics and more mixing possibilities, with helpful advice from Mark Yoshizumi. My friend, fellow musician, and Intangible Cat co-founder Mike Richards kept encouraging me to record every show...and...listen to it afterwards!
Last spring, living in Mexico, I listened and re-listened to hours of live recordings from Minto and a host of other venues. Minto and Elsewhere presents the real musical gems of inspiration and improvisation captured in those recordings.
The music on this album amplifies the energy I take in from those who steward the farm and the community members who gather to savor the farm's nourishment.
'Minto and Elsewhere' takes you on a powerful journey. Intricate details intermingle with grooving beats. Pop it on your stereo and watch the clouds go by."-J.J. Gregg

Gregg • Show Bio for Ravi Albright "Ravi Albright is a professional tabla player and the Executive Director of Seattle Tabla Institute, a 501c3 non-profit organization, offering ongoing classes, workshops and musical events throughout the year in Seattle, WA. Ravi has also formerly served as Adjunct Professorship of Tabla at Lewis & Clark college in Portland, OR. Born in Seattle, Ravi has been a student of North Indian classical tabla drumming in both India and the U.S. since his youth. He is one of only a few ganda-banda ( formally recognized ) disciples of Pandit Anindo Chatterjee of Kolkata, India. In 2006 he was initiated into the Farukhabad Gharana, one of India's traditional schools of tabla playing. His status was consecrated at a formal ceremony call a "puja", in which the guru (revered instructor) ties a thread around the wrist of the shishya (student) to signify the bond between them and the commitment of the shishya to the art form. Ravi has dedicated his life to Tabla and will be a torch barer of this important school in the years to come. In his youth, he also studied with the talented Debopriyo Sarkar, a very advanced student of Pt. Chatterjee in San Rafael, CA. Ravi is now a professional tabla player based in the Seattle area. He performs regularly in the Seattle area for classical Hindustani, Western classical, and fusion ensembles. Ravi has studied accompaniment from and performed with many accomplished musicians such as Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ut. Shahid Parvez Khan, Pt. Tejendra Majumdar, Pt. Nayan Ghosh, Pt. Sugato Nag, Pt. Kushal Das, G.S. Sachdev, Deepak Ram, and many others. He has performed in the Seattle area, and throughout the United States and Canada." ^ Hide Bio for Ravi Albright
