Reuniting fourteen years after their first album, trumpeter Jacob Wick, pianist Marc Riordan and drummer Frank Rosaly revive Tres Hongos for eight live improvisations of fractured piano gestures, searching brass lines and continually reorganized percussion, moving through spacious suspensions, playful melodic exchanges and dense eruptions with the sharp reflexes and volatile rapport of a long-established trio.

Recorded live in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, at ZAAL 100, in April, 2024, by Ron Ruiten.
Fourteen years after their debut album, Where My Dreams Go to Die, trumpeter Jacob Wick, pianist Marc Riordan and drummer Frank Rosaly reconvene as Tres Hongos for More Chips, recorded during a live performance at Amsterdam's ZAAL 100. The earlier release combined studio sessions with live recordings from 2010 and 2011, establishing a collective language capable of moving from austere, spacious improvisation to bright melodic passages and dense, high-energy assaults. More Chips retains that breadth but presents the trio after years of separate artistic development and geographical dispersal, their rapport sounding at once familiar and newly unsettled.
Across eight collectively shaped pieces, Wick's trumpet alternates between compressed tones, searching linear phrases and sudden declarative calls. Riordan approaches the piano as both a harmonic and percussive instrument, breaking chords into isolated attacks, irregular clusters and sharply articulated fragments, while Rosaly continually reorganizes the music through fractured pulses, rolling textures and abrupt shifts in density. Their playing rarely settles into fixed roles: rhythmic ideas become melodic ones, accompaniment turns into disruption, and seemingly independent gestures suddenly converge into tightly coordinated forms.
The trio's longstanding interest in sudden contrasts remains central, but the interaction has acquired greater patience and elasticity. Extended pieces such as "Skipped Rocks Don't Not Dance" and "Best Damn Tupperware" allow ideas to accumulate, dissolve and return in altered form, while shorter improvisations compress the same volatile exchanges into concise bursts. Recorded live, the album captures the ensemble's playful sense of risk and its ability to turn hesitation, collision and rapid redirection into coherent collective structure. More Chips is both a continuation of the restless language introduced on Where My Dreams Go to Die and a vivid account of how three improvisers can resume an old conversation without attempting to recreate its past.
