Recorded live in Krailing near Munich in December 2024, German multi-reedist Udo Schindler and pianist Uwe Oberg engage in a dynamic duo of free improv, moving from hushed chamber-like exchanges to dense, animated dialogues as Schindler's clarinets and alto flute weave intricate lines through Oberg's resonant piano textures in a richly interactive exploration of timbre, space, and spontaneous form.

Recorded live at Studio+Atelier SCHINDLER in Krailing/Munich, Germany, on December 6th, 2024, by Udo Schindler.
Recorded live at Studio+Atelier Schindler in Krailing near Munich in December 2024, Schädel Magie brings together German multi-reedist Udo Schindler and pianist Uwe Oberg for an intimate yet adventurous duo session of free improvisation. Schindler moves across clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, and alto flute, drawing an expansive palette of tones that range from whispering low-register murmurs to sharp, cutting articulations. Opposite him, Oberg — an experienced improviser with deep roots in both jazz and contemporary music — shapes the piano into a responsive partner, alternating between resonant chordal structures, pointillistic gestures, and dense clusters.
The performance unfolds as a series of contrasting improvisations, shifting fluidly between atmospheric exploration and surging conversational exchanges. At times the duo construct spacious, chamber-like passages where subtle timbral detail and quiet dynamics dominate; elsewhere they surge into animated interplay, the reeds spiraling through Oberg's percussive piano lines in tightly woven dialogue. The music maintains a balance between abstraction and lyric suggestion, emphasizing attentive listening and rapid mutual response.
Part of Schindler's long-running exploration of collaborative improvisation documented across numerous Munich sessions, the album highlights the expressive breadth possible within a simple duo format. With its interplay of low-tone reeds, airy flute colors, and richly textured piano, Schädel Magie presents a compelling example of contemporary European free improvisation built on nuance, contrast, and deep musical communication.

• Show Bio for Udo Schindler "Udo Schindler is a German improvisation musicians (bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, saxophone, flute, cornet, also accordion, guitar, percussion, analog synthesizer) and architect. Schindler was active in the 1970s in Franconia first as rock and rock jazz musician before he had flute lessons at the conservatory Nuremberg. Subsequently, he studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich and worked as an architect. In the 1990s he turned to contemporary music (Arch.Ensemble) and improvised music (Schindler.Interferenz.3). In addition to the single tube instruments (saxophones and clarinets), he studied the cornet. In addition to his sound research, he also worked as a director, performer, musician and composer for various theater productions. In the following years he performed with solo and duo projects at new music festivals (Musica Viva, Klangaktionen, etc ...), jazz, experimental music, among others. This led to collaborations with musicians like Hubert Bergmann, Gerry Hemingway, Eddie Prevost, Sebi Tramontana, Georg Wissel, John Russell, Blaise Siwula, Frank Gratkowski, Hans Koch, Urs Leimgruber, Elisabeth Harnik, Katharina Weber and Frank Paul Schubert. In addition to his activities in solid cast he initiated in Munich a series of concerts to free improvisation in ad hoc to test instrumentation." ^ Hide Bio for Udo Schindler • Show Bio for Uwe Oberg "Uwe Oberg *1962 Offenbach / Germany, lives in Wiesbaden nearby Frankfurt. He started playing piano at the age of seven, moved in the early 80s from popular music to Jazz and joined in 1986 the KOOPERATIVE NEW JAZZ / ARTist Wiesbaden, an association of improvising musicians. Improvisation is the keyword for his work. Impressed by Free Jazz and New Music, he developed exceptional piano techniques; influences are Thelonious Monk, Paul Bley, Cecil Taylor, Don Pullen, Ran Blake, Andrew Hill, the music of Anthony Braxton, the early piano compositions of John Cage as well as european free improvisation. He is also a composer and a highly individual interpret of Jazz-compositions. He works in various musical contexts: as a soloist he bends the bow from inside piano to the music of Monk. With LACY POOL he dives into the music of Steve Lacy, the duo with SILKE EBERHARD plays originals as well as music by Carla Bley, Annette Peacock a.o. ROPE is an improvising quartet with european line-up. Whatever Oberg plays, he transforms each material in his very personal, twinkling sound without musical borders. Beside fixed projects he enjoys the improvised encounter with musicians from different styles and cultures. He often played in combination with other artforms, theatre / dance / lyrics, currently mainly with silent films, as a soloist and with ensembles. Cooperation with: ALFRED HARTH, PETER KOWALD, XU FENGXIA, MATTHIAS SCHUBERT, PHILIPPE MICOL, JÜRGEN WUCHNER, ULI PHILLIPP, TONY OXLEY, SVEN-AKE JOHANSSON, RUDI MAHALL, HR JAZZENSEMBLE, HEINZ SAUER, URS LEIMGRUBER, SAADET TÜRKÖZ, SUBROTO ROY CHAUDHURI, PAUL LOVENS, AXEL DÖRNER, FRANK GRATKOWSKI, EVAN PARKER a.m.o. In December 2007 Oberg got the award HESSISCHER JAZZPREIS. Laudatio by Dr. Wolfram Knauer (in German Language)" ^ Hide Bio for Uwe Oberg
