"Film, slat, hazelnut, tailor, formula, lad, walnut.
I founded the septet - which appears on the present recording in an expanded octet formation - around 2010. On the one hand, I wanted to broaden the trio I was then running with Ervin Malina and Istvan Csik; on the other hand, to narrow down the large-ensemble apparatus, which at times had expanded to anywhere between ten and as many as twenty-three members. The members of the septet/octet are as follows: the outstanding and exceptionally musical improviser Andrea Berendika, who first appeared at a workshop I led in 2010, and with whom my collaboration has remained unbroken ever since; Bogdan Rankovic, an old comrade-in- arms whose multifaceted activity in the high-level interpretation of Serbian folk music and Serbian bourgeois music is unparalleled and fills a long-standing gap, and whose musicality and instrumental technique are exceptional; Nemanja Mihailovic, a master of the bassoon and likewise a long-standing and faithful collaborator; Ivan Burka, whose precision in thebest sense of the word and whose creativity are indispensable and deeply inspiring; Mate Pozssr, the youngest member of the ensemble, an outstanding connoisseur and teacher of free music, contemporary jazz, and the deep theories underlying them, as well as a devoted interpreter and mediator of the life's work and music of Gyorgy Szabados - our common master - and, to the same extent, an excellent pianist; and finally, but by no means least, my two oldest friends and comrades of the past twenty-five years: Ervin Malina, the philosopher of the double bass, a master musician endowed with extraordinary sensitivity, intuition, and musicality, and Istvan Csik, the universal drummer, ready and willing for anything. Beyond them, I must also mention sound engineer Lazar Zivanac, with whom I have been working for twenty-five years in both studio and live recording contexts. He is not only an exceptional collaborator in technical terms, but also from a musical perspective: he understands andfeels technology and music simultaneously in such a way that, during recording sessions, communication between musicians and sound engineer becomes almost unnecessary. All of them are long-standing, loyal, and outstanding musical partners and friends, with whom I had already collaborated on numerous occasions in various formations for many years before the ensemble itself was founded. The personnel of the septet/octet remained virtually unchanged from the very beginning. During a temporary personnel change, Burka joined the ensemble in place of Berendika; he has since become a permanent member of the group as it expanded from a trio into a quartet. With Andrea's later return, I expanded the septet into an octet, as both of them were - and remained - key figures in the ensemble. Another change occurred in the earlier lineup: trombonist Branislav Aksin - the senior member of the ensemble, whose musical relationship with me dates back to 1997 - recently decided to conclude his activeperforming career and devote himself to academic teaching. This album is dedicated to him with great affection and respect. Most of the material on this album consists of new compositions. I almost never comment on, interpret, or analyze my works - at least not in musical terms - because I am convinced that music must represent itself (and, if necessary, defend itself). Any composer's explanation, interpretation, or analysis is unnecessary; this is the task of musicologists and critics. Here, too, I will make only a few remarks that are ultimately insignificant from the perspective of listening to the music. The piece entitled "Only in Movies", which also gives the album its title, despite its name does not refer to film music or a parody of film music. The title rather points to a more underlying idea, with the emphasis placed on the word "only." Regarding "Neither Walnut nor Hazelnut," poet Istvan Domonkos - Domi - recounts in a documentary film about his life that, at a very youngage, he once performed as a trombonist with a big band in a stadium, where he had a solo he was terribly afraid of: "[...] and I see that the microphone is still over there, and I still have to get to it. After about the fourth step I pulled myself together and said: well, what is it? Are you a cowardly worm? What do you even want to do if you've already given this up, and that up, and that one too? Come on, go out there! I think that's how I tried to convince myself, and I went out and played. Well, it must have been a rather mediocre solo, but I didn't collapse, the instrument didn't fall out of my hands. That moment afterwards, when the applause erupted - I suppose if it had been a great solo, I'd still be flying around up here in the air - but it was a mediocre solo, yet that applause was such that, you know, the heavens opened. As if the Lord said, well, Domi, come, here you are among us - that's how I felt. And of course, you have these little moments in your life, and then ofcourse failure, failure, failure... no money... no walnut, no hazelnut, no walnut, no hazelnut... that's roughly how your life passes." At the same time, this composition is also a distant yet close reflection on a piece by Szabados, which we rehearsed extensively as a duo and once performed together in Kanjiza; its title was The Dream of Making Jam. The title "Tailor's Apprentices" refers to the work of Cecil Taylor. At the same time, I feel that I am not yet ready to write a true homage piece - just as I am not yet ready for a Peter Kowald homage. This is merely the apprentice tailor's attempt at sewing a waistcoat. The composition entitled "8 - 6 + (2 - 8) + (6 - 2) + 6" is the result of a shared creative process: the collective music of six musicians from the octet, in which the experience of many years of collaboration may perhaps become perceptible. "Lath Waltz" is a mildly ironic and sarcastic, yet at the same time emotional pamphlet. My sincere thanks go to all the musiciansand the sound engineer who contributed to the creation of the musical material on this album. Szilard Mezei, Zenta, 17 December 2025.

Trio. However, being himself not just a fan but even professor in music theory, he has been speculating since a longer time about a conceptual compositional approach based on harmonies and voices inherent in modal and polymodal harmonics. He invited his close musical friends to join his brand new, drumless sextet in order to realize this concept about a slowly-built, transparent chamber music, exuberant both in binding terms and free improvisation." ^ Hide Bio for Mate Pozsar • Show Bio for Ervin Malina "Ervin Malina: Serbian bass player Ervin Malina, double-bass graduated from the Art Academy of Novi Sad (Serbia) in 2007.His ability to transform and identify with different music styles made him a valued member of a variety of ensembles on his musical journey.
