"To encourage you, here are seven CDs for the price of two: Frog, Bug, Guitar, Computer (featuring what it says in the title); Prime; GPS (Steve MacLean Ensemble's final CD),Year of the Dragon, (featuring Chris Cutler); Bridges (double CD) and Ordinary Objects and Other Distractions (musical manipulations of toys and everyday objects) - PLUS the great - and long out of print - Radial Circuit (polyrhythmic instrumental band compositions) - in a sturdy box. ... Steve MacLean is a musician, composer, producer, and engineer known for his work with music technology, particularly in the early 1980s. He is also a professor in the Electronic Production and Design department at Berklee College of Music (retired). Early in his career, MacLean gained experience with early digital audio and music production tools like the Fairlight CMI, DX-7, Linn Drum, and automated mixing consoles in a NYC recording studio. He has been actively performing and composing for over 30 years. Briefly a member of Nick Didkovsky's Dr Nerve, MacLean then co-founded the Portland Experimental Music Collective, formed his own quartet (with Tim Inman on keyboards, Jim McGirr on bass, and Dave Fields on drums) and released the all-instrumental album The Opposite of War (ReR, 1999). The lively chamber jazz-rock music of Windows Pt 2 and Windows Pt 1 is modulated by a frenzy of tempo shifts, with more than a hint of Frank Zappa's influence. The other tracks, notably Branches, walk a fine line between lounge music, minimalist repetition, neoclassical passages, and exotic rhythms. The double-CD Bridges (2007) compiles works spanning two decades and several styles, from the mechanic ballet No Jazz (1989) to the King Crimsonian prog rock of One Little Life (2001). Its 2nd disc, devoted to electronic experiments, runs the gamut from ambient music to musique concrete."-Recommended Records"
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Steve MacLean "Steve MacLean is an assistant professor in the Electronic Production and Design Department at Berklee College of Music. A guitarist, composer, producer, and engineer, he has been evolving with music technology since the early 1980s, when he worked in a New York City recording studio and got hands-on experience with early versions of the Fairlight CMI, DX-7, Linn Drum, automated mixing consoles, and digital audio samplers. Later, he founded his own recording and production studio and produced/engineered hundreds of artists and numerous award-winning projects including scores for more than 200 commercials and soundtracks, as well as a prolific output of his own acclaimed works. An active performer and composer for more than 30 years, he was cofounder of the Portland Experimental Music Collective, has performed original compositions at numerous new music festivals, including several pieces for New Music Across America and similar events. An innovator in the new music circuit, he was curator for a series of concerts called 2001 New Music Odyssey, and continues to release recordings internationally on Recommended Records, U.K., and others. MacLean has been a music technology educator independently and with Berklee. He also was a product specialist/clinician with a variety of manufacturers for more than 20 years." ^ Hide Bio for Steve MacLean • Show Bio for Chris Cutler "Chris Cutler started messing about with banjo, guitar and trumpet at school, settling for drums and playing shadows and other instrumental covers in his first band in 1963. Subsequently he played in R'n'B and Soul Bands, winding up in 1967 playing in London's psychedelic clubs. At the start of the seventies, with Dave Stewart, he co-founded The Ottawa Music Co, a 22 piece Rock composer's orchestra, eventually joining British experimental group Henry Cow with whom he toured, recorded and worked in dance and theatre projects until it's demise in 1978. In 1977 Henry Cow, The Mike Westbrook Orchestra and Frankie Armstrong formed a big-band and toured around Europe. After Henry Cow, Cutler went on to co-found a series of mixed national groups Art Bears, News from Babel, Cassiber, The (ec) Nudes, P53 and The Science Group. He was a permanent member of American bands Pere Ubu, Hail and The Wooden Birds and now works sporadically with John Rose, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins, Iancu Dumitrescu, Peter Blegvad and Stevan Tickmayer. Other lasting collaborations have included Aqsak Maboul (Belgium), Lussier/Derome and Les Quatre Guitaristes (Canada), The Kalahari Surfers (Africa), Perfect Trouble (Germany), Between (Sweden), N.O.R.M.A., (Italy), Telectu (Portugal), Mieku Shimuzu (Japan),The Hyperion Ensemble (Romania), The Film Music Orchestra, 'Oh Moscow', Gong, The Work and Towering Inferno (UK), The Residents (USA), and stateless Tense Serenity and Mirror Man. There have also been countless improvisational groupings and solo performances. Recent projects include Radio pieces with Lutz Glandien and Shelly Hirsch, Live Soundtrack for Carl Dreher's Vampyr (with Italians Musci and Venosta), his Timescales project and work with David Thomas and Linda Thompson. He also founded and runs the independent label and distribution service ReR/Recommended and, until 1991, the East European specialist label Points East. He is editor of the New Music magazine Unfiled and author of the theoretical book File Under Popular as well as of numerous articles and papers published in 14 languages. He lectures intermittently on theoretical and music related topics. He has appeared on more than 100 recordings." ^ Hide Bio for Chris Cutler • Show Bio for Jorrit Dijkstra "The music of saxophonist and composer Jorrit Dijkstra (Eindhoven, Netherlands, 1966) draws from the jazz tradition in spirit and sound, but has crossed stylistic and cultural borders in order to express a strong, evolving personal vision. He spent his formative years in Amsterdam's vibrant improvisation community playing jazz, free improvisation, and world music. Since moving to the United States in 2002, Dijkstra has deepened his affinity with the experimental forces of American music, while staying in touch with his Dutch musical roots. Jorrit works as a composer and is an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music and a faculty member of the New England Conservatory in Boston. Dijkstra's recent projects include The Whammies play the Music of Steve Lacy, with leading Chicago, Boston, and Amsterdam improvisers, and duos with drummer/composer John Hollenbeck and trombonist Jeb Bishop. In Boston he leads the free improvisation quartet BOLT. In his solo project, he incorporates an array of electronic effect devices to process his saxophone improvisations live on stage. Dijkstra's use of analog electronics - including the Lyricon, a vintage electronic wind instrument from the seventies - extends his already flexible saxophone style into an idiosyncratic mix of cool jazz, free improvisation, and electronic minimalism. Jorrit's work as a composer balances between similar stylistic boundaries. Commissioned by the North Sea Jazz Festival 2009, Pillow Circles brings together eight top improvisers in a mesmerizing sound world filled with indie guitar-rock and free jazz influences. His ongoing project Music for Reeds and Electronics explores the sonic possibilities of reed and electronics players in different improvisation communities in North America and Europe. Dijkstra has received other commissions from the David Kweksilber Big Band, Tetzepi Big Band, Amstel Saxophone Quartet, Kaida Duo, Duo X, The Harvard Jazz Band, electric guitarist Wiek Hijmans, saxophonist Ties Mellema, and bass clarinetist Fie Schouten. His commissioned works often incorporate electronic soundtracks and various forms of improvisation. Dijkstra's work has won him a Fulbright grant and the prestigious Podium Prize for jazz musicians in the Netherlands. Jorrit has released eighteen CDs as a leader, and has participated in projects ranging from Anthony Braxton's Ghost Trance and Guus Janssen's opera Noach to a rare live performance of Texas outsider musician Jandek. He studied improvisation and composition with Misha Mengelberg, Steve Coleman, Steve Lacy, Bob Brookmeyer and Lee Hyla. He is co-founder of the artist-run label Driff Records. Jorrit is an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music and a faculty member of the New England Conservatory in Boston." ^ Hide Bio for Jorrit Dijkstra
