Silver-Swartz, Sivan: Untitled 6 (Edition Wandelweiser Records)

An hour long work for the string quintet of Nigel Deane (violin), Patrick Behnke (viola), Tanner Pfeiffer (viola), Tal Katz (cello) & Julius Tedaldi (cellos) performing on two contrasting charts, one where musical elements change and recur, the other where things change but don't recur, creating a textural feel of dovetailed motion and intricate interstices.

Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"This is a recording of a group of five friends playing music for an hour. They are navigating two charts. One charts things that change and do not return while the other charts things that change but do return. The former has only one path while the latter has infinite. while the charts are things that i made, the paths are things the people playing the music made."-from the liner notes

Òit is common to assume that geometrical space is the objective reality, and that personal and cultural spaces are distortions.Óyi-fu tuan, Òspace and placeÓ

Òin time, those unconscionable maps no longer satisfied, and the cartographers guilds struck a map of the empire whose size was that of the empire, and which coincided point for point with it.Ójorge luis borges, Òon exactitude in scienceÓ

Òpersonal observation is better than the exactest description, especially when, as here, the subject of investigation is an analysis of sensations themselves, which are always extremely difficult to describe to those who have not experienced them.Óhermann helmholtz, on the sensations of tone

Artist Biographies

"Sivan Silver-Swartz (b. 1993) makes experimental music through notated composition, installation, and performed song. Just intonation, information aesthetics, duration, cyclicality, and counterpoint are all things he often thinks about when making music. The political limitations of art and the necessity to engage in political organizing outside of the artistic sphere is a deeply held belief that also informs his music making.

Sivan was raised in Columbus, Ohio and stayed in his home state to receive a BM in composition from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in 2015. He received an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts in 2019, studying under Michael Pisaro and Wolfgang von Schweinitz. His music has been presented by Dog Star Orchestra, the wulf., and the Syndicate for the New Arts. He lives in Los Angeles."

"Patrick Behnke is a viola player, composer, improviser, and multi-media artist. Patrick's work focuses on how relationships between a community of musicians and their environment cultivate varying points of view regarding a musical event.

Born in San Bernardino, California, raised in the metropolitan Detroit, Michigan area, and currently living near Los Angeles, Patrick performs as a member of the performer-composer ensemble the Desert Quill Quartet, the Matsumoto/Behnke duo, the Apt Heavens Duo and the improvising trio In Transit. Patrick has appeared regularly as an improvising violist and electronic artist at venues in Los Angeles (Coaxial, The Mortuary) and Detroit (Trinosophes, SpreadArt), as well as performing at venues across the U.S. and Canada. His compositions have been performed by the Contemporary Choral Collective of Los Angeles (C3LA), the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, and ensembles in which he takes part. Patrick's musical involvement includes a range of styles and interests from Appalachian and Scottish fiddling to digital media, tuning systems and overtones, and free improvisation collaborations.

Patrick currently teaches viola and violin as a faculty member of the Los Angeles Music and Art School, at Harmony Project Los Angeles, at the Saturday Conservatory of Music in San Gabriel, and in private studios in Pasadena and Arcadia California."

"Tanner Pfeiffer (he/him) is a conductor, composer, singing violist, and educator. His work focuses on music as social practice and socialization as musical practice; it exists at the intersection of community studies, semiotics, pedagogy, and sociolinguistics. As a conductor Tanner emphasizes radical humanization of ensembles, encouraging musical development through empathy, vulnerability, and trust.

Tanner's music practice creates spaces for joy and connection in search of community and non-romantic intimacies. He cultivates a polystylistic aesthetic in all parts of his work. Tanner is invested in the pursuit of the ineffable as much as-if not more than-the pursuit

Tanner is the executive director and artistic director of vocal-electronic ensemble Chordas Collective. He earned his MFA in the Performer-Composer program at CalArts as well as a BA in Viola Performance and a BA in Mathematics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln."
