Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"Recorded by RLW (Ralf L. Wechowsky of P16.D4) and SRMeixner (Stephen Meixner of Contrastate) between 2010 and 2013. The first emanation of the project came up with two versions of one mutual piece ("Sunglasses..." by RLW, and "Wishing..." by SRM). The core structural elements of the release can be seen in SRM's meditation on sentiment ("Old Hearts...") and RLW's text-based pieces ("Prach-tjunge," "Alle," "Definition"). More instrumentally-based are "Gummidorf" (SRM) and "Spaßbremse" (RLW). Beyond there, both artists have touched all pieces in various ways, as indicated indirectly here: RLW (Dec 2010): "Some weeks ago I did a horrible DJ-set for a 75th birthday celebration, which included Heino and other German schlager cruelties. It was so terrible. Maybe I'll go back to the pieces I used for this event some day. This stuff is awful enough to make another use of it." SRM (Jan 2011): "I have been thinking about your description of German schlager cruelties and how horrible it was and awful enough to do something with. Maybe there is a possible project there?"-Monotype

Referencing the "laminal" style of AMM improvisations, the 6th album from the UK-based Orchesta of the Upper Atmosphere ensemble, led by multi-instrumentalist and woodwind player Martin Archer and Jan Todd, evolved from studio sessions of bass rhythms, free improvisation over those foundations, and then horn & voice arrangements shaped around the results, creating a superb hybrid of jazz rock, textural and free improv.
